probably the hardest portrait to take, and be satisfied with, is a self portrait.  This is the closest to satisfaction I have. Bronica SQ-a, Polaroid type 664, #1 Hoya CU filter.

Let's see yours !

I don't like being in front of the camera so this is the best I can do.

Edit - Actually, the more I looked at mine, the more I hated it, so I've cropped it down to the bit I'm happy with. See my avatar for the real thing.

Here's a 30 second exposure at night. I ran into the frame and stood there for about 10 seconds, then ran out and fired a flash at the wall. Shot with Nikon F90X. Fuji Neopan 400

Tinm@n you have a Tom Conti thing going on there I'd say :-)

Not sure that I have a sensible SP to offer (other than about 50 which feature a camera stuck to my face)...will take a look and worst case, will send in one of the mirror shots.
: Re: filmwasters self-portraits

Yep, as expected I cannae find one which doesn't involve a mirror. Of those this is the most colourful (and also reveals a bit of shin!). Taken in Woolies (RIP) in Balham last summer with a Pentax SLR and some nice Agfa film then xpro'ed.

Whooa there Mr Blaxton - that pic is scarily huge ....

as a rule of thumb pics with longest side set at about 500-700 work best for forum display.

...well it IS an 8x10 neg after all.

I'm missing polaroid for my 4x5, but I did get some Fuji material, and a back that I've not tried. Anyway, a self portrait I made with the sepia Type 56. I made this awhile ago, it might be time for a new one...

LOL!

It actually worked pretty well on my 21" new flat screen desktop monitor, but is a scrolling pain in the donkey (geddit) on all my other computer screens.

You know, Heather that might just be a good idea. Only condition would be that it would have to be entirely new work shot specifically for the collaboration, none of this stuff or older work re-posted...also we need to get creative with it - whatever that word means to you  (...just go the extra mile thought-wise before pressing the shutter release is where I'm coming from).

Will conflab this with the other 4 and get back ASAP. I've been meaning to do a SP for a while, so for me it's a good excuse to think about the mechanics of it and also to actually produce one.
: Re: filmwasters self-portraits
: tinm@n March 25, 2009, 03:42:08 PM
and how about making it a rule that they are proper SP's and no hiding behind cameras, shadows etc ?  or is that  bit too much ? ;)
: Re: filmwasters self-portraits
: rdbkorn March 25, 2009, 07:34:47 PM
and how about making it a rule that they are proper SP's and no hiding behind cameras, shadows etc ?  or is that  bit too much ? ;)

IIRC, the past collaborations have had a fairly simply stated theme that was wide open to interpretation. If there were to be a SP collaboration, I'd love to see in how many different ways people approach the theme.
: Re: filmwasters self-portraits
: Heather March 25, 2009, 09:05:58 PM
I am totally all for a proper selfie project. I recently bought a proper backdrop holding system and a *giant* piece of fabric along with some other random fabric for draping etc. I'm geared up for this!! :)
Running off to the sewing machine to properly sew a pocket into said giant piece of fabric...

Only condition would be that it would have to be entirely new work shot specifically for the collaboration, none of this stuff or older work re-posted..

Yeah, that and an actual self-portrait too. Not just a portrait of self, as some interpreted a while ago. This being a photograph you took of yourself, not one that someone else took of you with your camera... Skj.

: Re: filmwasters self-portraits
: Ed Wenn March 26, 2009, 11:27:38 AM
Oh yeah!!! I'd forgotten about THAT old chestnut...god that brings back memories (apologies here for not wanting to explain a very insider joke).   :-X

To be clear then, we'd be talking about a photo that YOU take of YOU. Usually this is understood by everyone reading the term 'self portrait' but there was time way back when....  ::)

Anyway, a new collab is long-overdue and this will be a fun one while we dream up a more challenging theme for everyone to interpret. Stand by for the group-wide email which we'll send out with the submissions guidelines etc.

Incidentally rdbkorn is correct, we like Filmwasters to be a pace where people can interpret a theme and get creative so there won't be any specifics listed around needing to be face-on to the camera or anything. Personally I'm looking forward to the challenge of doing something fairly traditional so won't be hiding behind shadows on this one, but if others want to then that's their call.

So feel free to start working on them, but please don't send any to the filmwasters mailbox or post them here in the meantime. We'll get the email sent out to forum users in the next day or so.

OK, it seems there will have to be one rule in the new collab guidelines. To whit, "If your name's Phil Bebbington then you're not allowed to take another photo of your ar*e!".

 :D :D :D :D

Also, on an entirely unrelated note I'm not worried about FW becoming a men-only group at all, Francois. Plenty of ladies post here regularly.
