Hi Peter,

I’d previously seen this which seems to suggest there’s a difference:

They say they use basically the same packaging but have the temperature sensor replaced by a more precise one.
Now unless I have one of each to test with a precision thermometer, I simply won't claim anything.

If you check the specs of both, temperature wise at least, they are identical. Functionally they look the same as well.

I must admit that the resemblance is uncanny...

Definitely.
This is probably proof of two things.
First, you put the "photo" label on anything and the price jumps instantly.
Second, Cinestill is a business, so they sell stuff and must make a profit on it.

The Wright brothers appeared on an episode of the Kodakery podcast. And the end they discuss the modifications they needed to make to the general sous vide device. Have a listen as it is quite an entertaining and insightful story they tell.

The price quoted in the Alibaba link is for a minimum order of 1,000 units - so at least some of the difference is the normal effect of bulk buying.

Didn't see that. But it can still be bought more cheaply than the 'modified' one.

Interesting. But sounds like they were looking for a reason to modify it. I get the different heating element if you're going to put it in the chems but would anyone do that? I wouldn't put anything in the chems that might carry over contamination. Makes far more sense to use it to heat a water bath in which case the different heating element is pointless. Guess it's a case of each to their own.

I don't see why heat-up the chemicals directly. That's just looking for trouble with cross contamination.
The water bath method is safe and it works flawlessly.
