The Terminal Bar

I don't know how I've never seen this before. A friend just sent it to me. At first I thought, Oh boy, more photos from gritty NYC BITD. But then, the photos... These are great portraits -- of individuals, of NYC, of humanity. And they're technically really good, too. BLOWN AWAY.

If he can take portraits like that in a bar, just think what he could do in a studio.  He missed his calling.

Wow! You're right, those are really good pictures. I wonder if he had a sort of mini studio somewhere in the bar (or in a corner) where he could get that kind of lighting. The background looks very similar in most of the pictures.

Most have extremely shallow DOF and appear a bit distorted. Like a 50mm 1.4 at minimum distance?

It looks like the bar had lots of windows. It was on the northwest corner... But Bryan, in a studio he'd never come across those people to shoot.

Wait a minute... Barstooldio

You're right! He mentions the corner of the bar where he shot in here

I was thinking the same thing, they probably aren’t the type to go to a studio for a portrait.

Thanks so much for bringing this to the surface.  I immediately subscribed and then noticed that the videos are all several years old.  The Terminal Bar series is the best or, at least, the most complete statement but there are a few others.  My dog impersonating Orson Welles is 35 seconds of bladder-challenging hilarity:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzWpvHFG6_8  Sadly, it doesn't seem like there will be more very soon.  I probably won't ever find the resources (time and energy) to make documentary videos but, if I do, then I would like them to be something like these.  What a great balance of information, challenging politics, beautiful photography, and trippy effects.

I personally don't think I have what it takes to make a documentary video. It would probably either be the most boring thing ever or turn into one of those WTF moments... Like when back at University when we had an assignment to make a presentation with Premiere to show a planning project... I got bad grades on this one... I don't think the teacher enjoyed me synching it up to Yello's Oh Yeah! with a throbbing presentation and plenty of jump cuts set to the beat.
Took me twice as long as the other students to make it and I probably had something like 80 different wipes, zooms and jump cuts in about 3½ minutes. Nearly gave the old PowerMac a nervous breakdown. And the teacher probably got a seizure from it  ;D

I’d like to see that presentation, François.

I still have it somewhere. Only problem is that it's on an old SyQuest disk and I don't have the reader for it  :(
