Friday 31 ...
« on: March 31, 2017, 09:41:25 AM »
Here's a portrait from Claire's new wooden box.  Paper neg, scanned and inverted.

I didn't take the shot, I just built the camera.

Thanks. It's actually upstate NY, which in places looks a lot more like the Midwest than people expect.

Sandeha, will Claire be sharing photos from that camera, it would be nice to see how it works out?

James, nice macro shots, I think I will be doing more of that this year.

I have a few more from North Dakota.  The first is the same cabin I shared last weekend, in color this time.  Both were shot with my Olympus OM-2n Using a Zuiko MC Autozoom f/4 35-70mm lens.  The film is Fujifilm Superia X-TRA 400.

I took this last Saturday in Philadelphia. After a few drinks, I began developing this roll of Tri-X 400, which I shot setting the EI to 800 on the EOS 650, and I developed it "attempting" (my first attempt, ever) to push it to 800.... However, since I was tipsy, I forgot to set up a timer and my assumption is that it spent around 14 minutes with Ilfosol-3 at 1:14

Whoops :D

Recently, I've been shooting Tri-X exclusively at either 800 or 1600, depending on whether my camera only meters up to 800 (Canonet, XA), or if it can meter up to 1600 (Pentax ME, Minolta SRT). If I shoot at 1600, I stand develop it in HC110 1:100, otherwise at 800 I push it in HC110 dil B for 8min. The great thing about negative film is that it has a lot of latitude, so most "whoops" moments should come out fine :D I once famously stand developed some Tri-X for about 8 hours and it was fine ;D (I was drunk that time, too ;) )

First couple of scans from first EFKE 25 film - St John the Baptist Hospital ruins High Wycombe.
Nikon F60, Yellow Y2 Filter, Tripod, around 1/8th, Ilfosol 3 for 7 minutes.
Very nice tonal range I think. Sky is burnt out, no clouds otherwise Y2 would have helped with that.
More to come.

First roll from the recently acquired Voigtlander Vitessa. If I had any criticism of the camera it would be that loading film is a bit fiddly. First film was OK, but the second roll I put in it got snagged on something and ripped the film, luckily it was clear something was amiss early on so I only wasted the first few frames taking the back off and clearing the rip.

Still. These are Fomapan 100 developed in R09, and I'm pretty pleased with the results from my day out to Alfriston.

I had an opportunity to hang with our school's piano technician as he worked his magic on a Steinway D before a concert.

Some amazing stuff here - Cactus Flower Buds - one of my plants is in full flower (only got digital pictures...). Plus-X from 1958 - that's not a mistake? As old as I am ....
Anyway another one on EFKE 25 - at work on a Friday afternoon - wish I was on that flight. The sky is not lit evenly - maybe it's due to the scanning. The film is very springy, in both directions, so probably caused by that.

Oh! Almost forgot about the weekend thread! ;D Here's my contribution. Ilford FP4+ in an XA taken at Land's End in San Francisco. Somehow I've been going to SF my whole life and had never been to Land's End. Highly recommended, not for this tree, but for the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge.

I scan with a very odd setting on my V500 ... I set the film type to B&W negative, but then scan in 48 bit color as opposed to grayscale or B&W. I did that by accident once and it looked better than either B&W negative/B&W or color negative/48bit color. Anyways, I always covert to B&W in Lightroom, except for this one, which I though looked great toned from the scanner.

You do have more color information that way. You can use the layers tab to select the sharpest layer (not all colors are equally sharp on scanners) and then convert it back to 16 bit grayscale.

Layers tab is only in Photoshop, right? May have to experiment with that. But the curious thing to me is that scanning in BW neg/48 bit color comes out sharper and more contrasty than color neg/48 bit color. Actually, I think it's just that the BW neg/48 bit color option gives me deeper blacks for some reason. And I do play around with the Epsonscan histogram as well.

I always try to get a scan with the widest tonal range, which almost inevitably looks flat, but adding contrast is much easier than lowering it. You can always build more contrast with a simple curve adjustment.

Excellent point. I just hate scanning and post-processing so much that I'll do anything to save time ;D If crushing the contrast in the scanner helps me in the Lightroom stage, then I'm all for that  :D

I don't relish time spent post-processing, but I've figured out a workflow that keeps things to a practical minimum (I use GIMP, so I can't say how applicable it might be to LR, but there's nothing terribly complex involved). Seriously, a curve adjustment might take a minute at most (I use a separate layer for non-destructive editing - that probably adds another second or two to the process).

The biggest motivator for me right now is that I'm printing, and there's nothing more irritating that looking at a big fresh print (with all the costs unavoidably swirling about in my mind) and feeling like the tones are off. I was tweaking things in the same way before, but I've gotten a lot more attentive to the details now.
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

My sister and niece
Badly focused Soligor 85mm f/1.5 "Biotar" on F100 with 10+ years out of date Neopan 1600 - stand dev. in Rodinal.

"Badly focused.." Nah... Beautifully soft..! Lovely family portrait, Aksel.

Loving the family portraits from Bob and Aksel (Sharp focus ain't all is cracked up to be!)

Wow! Gary's E6 shots are stunning! I also love Aksel's soft focused, grainy, vignetted portrait  ;D

Thank you guy´s, I totally agree, sharpness has never been a big priority with me, just this time it was a lucky miss or hit? Love how it turned out and it looks good printed and framed.

Taken this Sunday. Fuji Neopan Acros 100, Canon 50mm 1.8 developed in Ilfosol-3 1:14 for 9:45 minutes. While the pictures are nothing out of this world, I like the sharpness and tonality of Neopan. I think it'll be my go-to 100 ISO film.

Thanks,

Firstly, the pictures are quite nice. The highlights might be a tiny bit blown out, but that can be remedied with a little less dev time. I agree that this is a beautiful film. I really like it in Caffenol-CL stand for 70 minutes. The grays are so creamy smooth. It doesn't have the blackest blacks (in my hands), but I generally prefer lower contrast anyway.

I've heard a lot about Caffenol, however, I don't think I'm ready for it yet.

Highlights blown is an issue I've been dealing since I started using this camera. Obviously, coming over from digital where everything is so blah in terms of fixing/adjusting a shot, it will take me a bit of time to fully adjust. It would also help if my camera gave me more indication about exposure, other than a "CP" or "OP" awkward lettering.

I'm seriously considering getting another body, perhaps an EOS 1n or 3... Even an Elan 7NE, something that gives me a better visual reading of exposure. And has a better autofocus system too... I've been shooting in manual focus for the most part, which seems to defet the purpose of an AF camera.
