Nigel Parry - Film Advocate
« on: December 10, 2016, 06:48:38 PM »
I just saw these words of wisdom from Nigel Parry in a Guardian article about photographers talking about photos they've taken of Donald Trump. His photo is included below with a link to the article. Despite not being averse to putting photos of food on Instagram myself, I don't really think of that as photography - although it clearly is.

Anyway, I do love the fact that a high profile 'tog cites digital photography as a low point though.
 ;D  8) ;D :)

Nigel Parry’s CV
Born: Barnsley, 1961.
Training: As graphic designer at London College of Printing.
Influences: David Bailey, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson.
High point: “Taking this kind of photo.”

Low point: “Digital photography. The future is bleak because of falling standards due to saturation of dreadfully bad plates of food on Instagram.”
Top tip: “Before you lift your camera, before you go to the shoot, work out what you’re trying to say.”

Instagram is the one good thing about digital photography at the moment.

Not sure I'd go that far (i.e. I think there are tons of great things about digital photography), but I do agree that Instagram is a good thing. I use it most days.

I signed up to Instagram fairly recently (paulrjenkin if anyone's interested) but the one thing that really bugged the hell out of me was trying to work out how to post photos from my Mac.  I hadn't realised that the apparent intention was to limit posting to snaps from mobile phones themselves.  Anyway, I found an app that I can download photos into and which then pushes them onto my Instagram a/c.

I know it's a bit sad but I feel slightly subversive in that I'm posting film-based photos onto Instagram.  One has to get pleasure where it's to be got at my age..... ::)

Paul, we've been round this one a few times and I didn't mean to stir it up again, but yes you're obviously correct in saying that Instaspam content is overwhelmingly digital...however there is a LOAD of film work too. Search using hashtags and you'll see what I mean.

#filmphotography
#filmwasters

etc.

And even in the digi realm, there are a few good ones.
I kind of like
@crstecykiii
@ed.templeton

But maybe that's just my old skater roots acting-up there...
What is it with being in your 40's that makes you want to re-do stuff you did during your youth while you know for sure that you'll just end-up breaking your neck and aching all over if you do them?
