Weekend 4th - 6th March
« on: March 04, 2016, 12:03:45 AM »
It's just gone midnight here in the UK so reckon it's OK to start the weekend thread.

Swaledale in North Yorkshire, shot on Tmax 100 in a Mamiya RZ67:

Working through some backlog before I post new stuff (this is from a couple months ago). Leica IIIg, Jupiter-8 50/2, HP5+ in Caffenol C-H(RS).

Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

Bryan, is Rainier Beer best for mountain shots?
Mine's a gesture for the imminent arrival of spring: got outdoors with the Burke & James 4x5 and stood there for half an hour setting up and waiting for the sun to drop.

I do recommend it for mountain shots, it does say "Mountain Fresh" on the can.  I don't recommend it for drinking.

Strong showing this week! Can't call out a fave. I am continuing experiments with the Arista Ortho Litho 2.0 4x5. This time in X-Tol 1:1. It is a contrasty composition to begin with, so that's what you get. On another note, I have about 30 little figs on this tree. Gonna be some good eating this summer!

It seems fitting, given this week's bad news about the loss of FP-100C, that I post some instant film. I know I still have a stash and there are more boxes coming my way, but I am still absolutely gutted at losing my beloved peel-apart. I love regular film, but there is something about instant that just makes my heart sing. I think it's because the frustrated artist in me was only partly satisfied with regular roll film. Once I learned how to do emulsion lifts, however, it felt like I'd finally found a medium through which I could really express myself, and the tactile, physical nature of the work after taking the shot was so satisfying to me.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, even before reading about the demise of 100C, I'd gotten some Impossible Project film to give it another go in my SX-70. My first pack was disappointing, but I thought I'd get a frog tongue and try it again. I'm glad I did. Not only does the frog tongue make a difference, but in my research to get some tips about using the film, I found out that I can do emulsion lifts with it! I was so excited that I immediately dug out the shots from my first pack, all of which were overexposed and some of which were just totally blurred as well. I lifted the emulsion onto some painted canvas squares, and it felt sooooo good! :) Knowing that I can use the IP film in this way at least eases a little bit of the pain.

Oops, sorry for the long rambling story. Here's the first shot from the new pack I put into the SX-70 this afternoon. It can still be better, but this is a LOT better than my first pack, and more of what I expected from IP film in the first place. I am pleased :)

Leonore, I think that is a stunning photo! I'm usually very pleased with this film, but I've never managed to get such nice shades. Yes, the frog tongue is a very good investment, but don't forget the temperature. It should never be below 20C when developing, ideally around 24C. If it's cold I usually put the film in a breast pocket in my shirt. But it can also get too hot, which is probably what happened here: (sorry, just using the chance to show off  ::))

You can always scan in two parts and use Hugin Panorama to stitch them both together. I often do this, especially for 4x5 and other formats like that.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but today I had a chance to get out for the very first time with the Minolta X-370 that I repaired last summer!
Talk about something new!
And it's also the first time in all of Winter that I go out just to take photos... I think I should go out more often  ::)

Anyways, it was also a first for me developer wise. I used some HC-110 dil.E... not very exceptional apart from the expiry date on the bottle: 2012. The color: a dark yellowish brown. The consistency: thicker than the usual syrup. And the surprise: it all worked!

So here are the last few breath of winter and a small taste of spring.
Oh yeah, the last one's for Ed ;)

Thanks, Francois! At first, I was just really glad I didn't get a big yellow overexposed square, but then it exceeded my expectations and now I'm kind of excited about the film.

Thanks, Kai! Yup, I read that about the temperature as well. I took a second shot today while out walking around, and it was colder than 20C, but I put the print immediately in a book that I then put in the pocket of my camera bag that rests against my body. It developed pretty well, but I know that I need to be careful about it. But I must say, if your shot is the result of shooting when too hot, then I might need to try it sometime ;) That's a great image!

I'm uber late to the party...like a hangover I guess?
Love the assortment of color and black and white and subject matter.
It's always fun to see what every one does.

Mine's from the Praktica FX2 with the Zeiss f2.8 lens.
I'm loving the camera. It's quirky in a good way and I'm certain it will move up into my everyday camera bag of tricks.
Since you have to look down into the finder, it's a good stealth camera!
This photo was made last weekend during one of my usual treks to Texas to watch stars.
