New Super-8 camera coming from...Kodak?!
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:22:45 AM »
Yes, apparently Kodak is going to offer a brand spanking new Super-8 camera later this year, targeting the film school market. Just announced at CES.

Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

it's quite some news isnt it! I wonder if we'll get new stills cameras too (doubt it, but it would be nice!).

The camera is actually a re-branded or re-styled Logmar.  Kodak is teaming with them and Pro-8mm for the camera manufacture, processing and transfer.  The Logmar looks like a nice innovative camera but it is a bit expensive when there are so many good working used cameras out there.  The price for film/processing/transfer is going to be around $50 to $70 which is quite a bit more than I pay now.  Pro-8mm has always been kind of expensive.  I did see mention in one article about getting film back that can be projected so maybe that higher price includes printing a positive from the negative film.

I like the updated version of sending them the exposed film and having them process it and sending back prints.

Maybe now Holga's dead Kodak should bring back the Brownie...?

I looked at the camera and was surprised to see its a sound camera... Since nobody still manufactures sound film, I wonder how they're going to synch the digital audio with the film?
Also, a projector would need to be quite special for this to synch-up.

As for the brownie, they surely could make one for cheap nowadays... These things are so simply built.

I imagine they have a crystal sync motor for the film.

Obviously done in post... but I wonder if they are going to put a location marker on the film edge to sync everything?
A bit like some variant of the sound on film...

With a digital audio recording, I'm not sure if there would be a need for a sync track

I'm up so up for one of these. I've been thinking about Super-8 for a few weeks now and this popped-up, just at the right time. Or will do, later this year. Being lazy, I also like that Kodak will 'bundle' the film with D&P and send you back a d*g*t*l copy for editing purposes, as well as the analogue film reel.

All I need to do now is convince Mrs Zapsnaps that none of my existing camera collection can offer this facility (they can't - and the Eumig C3 retro beauty in the display cabinet is 8mm, rather than super-8). Oh and wait until the autumn. And get a few ideas together for a film. Or three.

Slightly off topic - for the records :
Kodak CEO Jeff Clarke is on a mission to bring film back, and his business card reflects that: http://petapixel.com/2016/01/12/kodaks-ceo-uses-35mm-film-as-his-business-card/  ;)

That's a neat idea. And the perfect way to use rolls of film you don't like!

Interesting but not exactly convenient to store in any business card case I've ever seen and I wouldn't want to fold it.

I wouldn't like to fold it either... but still it's pretty neat :)
But I think not having it fit in any standard case is a good thing in a sense. If it doesn't fit, you have to leave it out in the open. People play with it. And when they need film, they remember that card on a piece of film...

That is the best business card ever. I wonder if you could actually create biz cards like that in camera by taking a photo of a reverse-color sign. Or I guess a true color sign on E6. Sometimes I forget E6 exists :D

You could definitely do that. And it's pretty easy.
And if you do it with some xpro film, you'll get some incredible colors to boot!
