Filmwasters - World Tour Dates.
« on: September 14, 2007, 09:04:56 AM »
Nothing confirmed of course, but following db's suggestions we have a few FW World Tour ops brewing:

2008 (May) - FW in Tokyo. Diversity of the city (glorious food & sake, speeding shinkansen, gritty B&W streets, neon, kakoii galleries & photographic shops, and more cosplay than you have film). With sidetrip into the country to stay at a classic Japanese onsen ryokan (more glorious food & sake, hot springs, temples and more other cliches than you have film, plus a few things you've never seen before).

2009 (June) - FW at the Daylesford Bienale. Beautiful Victorian highlands, great food & wine, exhibitions, talks, workshops and seminars. Web link from 2007 available somewhere.

Tokyo date variable. Daylesford one fixed. Feel free to comment! Skj.

Well, Ro (my husband) and I have been talking for god knows how long about going to Japan again to visit my best friend. She lives in Hokkaido now, but we would definitely stop off in Tokyo before/after to catch up with other friends. June 2008 seems as good a time as any to plan it. That's assuming, of course, that my freelance career goes exponential before then and we can actually afford it!

By the way, if you want embarrassing tourist cliches, feel free to cast your eyes on this - which is just one example of the sort of thing we got up to when we were last in Japan, about nine years ago...   :o   :o   :o   ;D

Oh excellent Ailsa. Looks like a handpainted jobbi

I'm afraid the sales of the seaweed this year has gone badly, the potato has blight and the highland coow has a social problem so not sure I can make Japan next year. One place I would love to go sometime though as I have some friends who are pro Keirin riders [cycle racing for the sensible ones here]. Really nice chaps but held together with titanium bits as a result of all their crashes

Especially when it makes one's feet look like pigs' trotters!   ;D

I'm only sorry that I don't have a recording of Roland roaring Anarchy in the UK into the microphone at one karaoke place we visited. I could hear him above everyone else even right down the other end of the corridor. (He does a pretty good David Bowie, too.)

Just to stick a spanner in. Assuming we do manage to arrange something (and I win the lottery), my friend's just told me that it'll be easier for her to get time off in May. She's a teacher, so is a bit restricted on that front. Can I put in a request for plans to be pulled forward by a month or so? I know it's very early days right now!

Ailsa - that be a pretty great set of cliches - I love the distressed look.

Andrea - that vid looks like Saturday nite TV! We have the boats too of course, about the same size & color, with the same results.

Ailsa - May is as good as any other date, and we might get a few other school holidays too. One possible venue would be here for a dinner, with a room to ourselves: http://www.ukai.co.jp/toriyama/room/frame.htm

Hmmmm....

What's the weather like during those times?

I may be in Shanghai if I don't go to Iwo Jima for an eclipse in 2009.

This will be an extremely long solar eclipse-so if you're anywhere close to going, you should make plans to go.

I would give serious consideration to a trip to Japan... likely with my son, so June would make more sense to me.  But then maybe a solo trip in May would work.

But in the spirit of the thing, I am hoping to one day get to Mexico City also.

And then there is always Richmond, VA.  One day, when I am the host, I am thinking I will lavish earthly delights upon itinerant plastic fetishists from the world over.  I will treat all of you to food and drink and anything your heart desires for four days.  We will live commune style in a yurt village finally realizing some sort of group photo that will actually be worth looking at.  Then on the final day, we will have a glorious Mad Max cage match at the end where only one person will walk out alive.  I feel like this will thin the herd in a healthy way and thus allow this earth, our garden of delights, to replenish itself with new and superior imagery while the champion mates and multiplies and restores the toy camera bloodline.

Or New York is sort of handy to me too.  But someone else will have to arrange the death match.
My chopstick is really a love poem.

Andrea.

Mexico City would be fabuloso!

Following Gordons idea of something stateside....
New Mexico is home to some of the worlds most amazing desert scenery.
Pueblos, desert, lava fields, ice caves, high mesas, mountains, and don't forget Aliens!

The Jornada del Muerto (Journey of Death) is driveable and might work as a Mad Max type finale.

Or we could register and meet-up for "Burning Man" and set up our own film haven/village on the playa.
 :)

Burning Man---love that idea. It fits Gordon's Mad Max visions as well. We should do that!

You are all welcome to come visit me here in LA. You'd have to share the couch with Blue... And she snores like a freight train. And being that she is a herding dog, she nips your feet if you move too quickly --- as David Bennett found out when he popped by last year. By the way, David--make sure you were sturdier shoes when you visit next month. :)

I've always wanted to go to Japan, especially Nigata. But am not sure I would look as good in green!

But if the house is sold and I could find some nice cool person to look after Labrador No.1 and dafty Rotty cross - then count me in.

Always assuming I can convince my dearly beloved of course...

Mark  :)
