Sounds like a great camera club if you're getting this sort of chap doing the talks.  When I belonged to a camera club, the judges were all bushy beards, leather elbow patches and smoked a pipe - and that was just the women  :o

I'm sure I've heard of this chap before and the photos on his website do look strangely familiar.  Thanks for posting - really like his work.

There used to be a time where you had to pay to get in the freakshow to see the bearded lady... Oh, wait, you still have to pay to see to get in the club to see the bearded lady...

Ages ago I planned to join a camera club which had ...1898 in its name.
And it was 1898!
Glad I didn´t ;-)

There was definitely a formula to getting marks in the upper quartile, or even winning, at the club to which I belonged.  This is the 10 point formula (as best as I can remember it) and what amazes me is that I can still remember it......

1. Must be sharp - corner to corner
2. Exposure must be perfect - no blocked shadows and definitely no burned highlights.  Detail was required in everything - even the Sun (despite it bein a squillion candle power) and all reflective surfaces
3. The primary subject matter had to be on a thirds (and preferably the "correct" third as the judge saw it)
4. If shooting in colour there had to be something red in the photo - ideally as the primary subject matter or as a strong counterpoint to it)
5. Prints had to be "spotted" to within a millimetre of their lives
6. Horizons had to be perfectly perpendicular
7. No converging verticals
8. Colours to be neutral (other than sunrise / sunset when "warm" was acceptable"
9. Don't be creative with filters, etc.
10. All prints / slides had to be named - preferably with some cringe-worthy pun.

I have made the conscious decision to cut back on my judging commitments with a view to stopping all together. Why you may ask? Over the past 10 years I have had to put up with heckling, incessant talkers, not being introduced, not being thanked and even having to ask for travel expenses rather than being offered. I was even once double booked (the competition secretary's fault), no apology offered or expenses! My philosophy is that I'm there to help others with their photography, to offer advice as to how images can be improved or to approach a subject in a different way. I sometimes would be more than happy just to critique images and not give marks. I reward quality but will always give preference to creativity. I've heard quite a lot of criticism aimed towards judges but has anyone stopped to think it works both ways. There are clubs on the circuit that don't have the same membership numbers or skill set but a judge still has to show the same amount of enthusiasm. I once had only 18 images to judge over a whole evening, there is a limit one can talk about a below average picture. I became a judge as I felt I could redress the balance and would like to think that I have helped people over the years but it is the general attitude towards judges that is turning the tide for me. Rant over.
When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.

I've never belonged to a camera club, but where I work (the B&H Event Space) we periodically have crits where anyone can come and bring images. We don't have scoring; we just try to give the each photographer some new things to think about. I think it's helpful to have fresh eyes look at your work.

I've belonged to a few clubs over the past 40 years or so but I wish that at any of them we'd had just one judge of Paul Mitchell's capability and attitude.
