Okay, so what's in your camera bag right now?
« on: October 13, 2015, 04:34:04 PM »
Exactly what the question says - if you had to pick up a camera and take photos right now, what would you be using?

I'll lead off with Nikon F2SB, 35mm/f2 and 85mm/f2 Ai Nikkors and Ilford HP5.  That's my daily film combo that commutes with me almost every day.

Due to the rules of the forum, I can't say what my daily camera is, because it's from the Dark Side! I only Waste Film for stuff I really care about, rather than the merely interesting which I snap as I go through life.

A just repaired Nikon F301 which I was due to loan to my son for his uni project till I put my thumb into the shutter curtain. So I spent the evening repairing it.

I don't carry a bag, but my current carry cam is my trusty Nikkormat FTn with <embarrassed>AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D</embarrassed> because I dropped my Nikkor-S 50/1.4 and it no longer focuses infinity. :(
Film is 1994 expired T-Max 400 shooting at 200.
Companion gear is Sekonic L-508 Zoom Master meter (no batteries available for the camera meter).

Just a Lowepro messenger bag with my Nikon F-90x and the 28-70 lens that I got with it. A few filters, my Holga lens, notebook with a Nikon pen (I just love the reps at trade shows). Film wise, either Fomapan400 exposed at EI250 or some very vintage Kodak Gold 400 rated appropriately.

I went out today with the Tutone and a 405 Polaroid holder.  But on the kitchen table there's my Pentax ME Super with a 43/1.9 Limited lens and half a roll of Tri-X still to go.

Right now I'm working in California with my Leica III with an Elmar 5 cm lens.  I have two rolls of Ilford Delta 100, 1 Roll of Kodak T-Max 100, and one roll of expired Kodak Gold 200.  I also have some lens cleaning supplies, a changing bag and a red filter.

I've just this minute packed my camera bag, for a possible early morning trip to the coast before work. There's a Mamiya RZ67, with 50mm,65mm, and 110mm lenses, loaded with Ektar. Plus there's a Sekonic 758DR spot meter, cable release +spare, grey card, and tripod.

Some Kleenex, a Blackwing 602 pencil, $0.82 in assorted change, the Money & Investing section of last Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, half a Butterfinger, and a small, mildly venomous, but generally friendly spider. And probably a camera of some sort.

I only have one "camera bag", and like zapsnaps, I am forbidden from disclosing what's in it. But I never use that camera/bag. I use the regular messenger bag I tend to carry everywhere, and the camera(s) that are in there change daily as per my mood, and are always "forum-safe" cameras :) Right now that bag only contains The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie, because this time of year I have enough jacket pockets that I can easily fit my XA and sometimes even another camera. Today I believe I shall bring my Polaroid SLR680 on my nightly rounds, it being roid week and all :)

As I took out all the photo gear the other day all that's left is:

  • Packet of tissues
  • Reading glasses
  • Bag of ginger chews
  • Small silica gel packet that I didn't even realize was in there 'til now
  • Photo club ID Badge
  • Small box of photo business cards from moo
  • Rubber band from my Zero Image 4x5 pinhole camera

Terribly unexciting.

If possible I try not to lug a camera bag around with me - when travelling I prefer to wear a jacket with pockets big enough for a holga or two and rolls of film.

If the climate is more tropical I wear shorts with large pockets for the holga.

if I have my mamiya 6 with me then I'll put that in a camera bag, and I use a daysack for anything bigger.

So nothing is in my camera bag at the moment. Or in my jacket pockets for that matter and shorts are soon to be a distant memory.

I'm just like Charles in this matter, if I'm not going on a day trip I don't bring a bag. Just a camera slung over the shoulder, no extra lenses, just spare batteries and some rolls of film in my pockets. My last outing was yesterday with a Konica Pearl IIIMx shooting Agfachrome RS 200 expired in '93.

Is (travelling) lightness a function of more developed technique and the awareness that you can't capture every shot, every time? I used to take everything - two bodies, a couple of lenses, a flash (just in case), a light meter (despite the the camera having a perfectly accurate one), never used filters still in their packaging etc. Now I either have a pocket point & shoot digi machine which can do almost everything (to a degree) bought off the Bay for £20, or the big Leica or Blad with a single lens. If I miss a shot because of kit limitations, so be it. And in 20-odd years of snapping, I can hardly remember the composition of a missed shot. They seemed important at the time, but now? No, I can't recall a single one.

A Leica R8 and a big chunk of glass and the Blad and an equally heavy amount of glass can't really be classed as travelling light, but a single body and lens is, comparatively, for me, a light travelling companion, capable of taking at least 95% of what is likely to be of interest on any given trip.

I don't use a camera bag. But I always have at least one camera in my backpack. Currently it's a Canon EOS 500N (thanks Kayos!) with a 50mm 1.8 or a Vivitar 19-35mm (still looking for a cheap wide prime) and some Rollei RPX 400.

I know I used to fill all three compartments in my bag to the brim. Now, I use just one and a half...
My usual kit used to be Nikon F-601, 28-70mm, 70-210mm, 17mm, doubler and a pack of filters, lens wipes, lens fluid, cable release, pen, paper, and probably some more stuff I can't remember.

So now, it's pretty light travels.

In my daily backpack, which is mostly for my laptop, iPad, and work-related stuff, I have my Nikon 35Ti partway through a roll of Ektar. In my film camera bag is my Bronica SQ-A that just finished a roll of Fuji 400H.

First choice for non specific picture taking?
An Olympus Pen F w/38mm f1.8 standard lens.
Also, depending on need I have a 20 f3.5, 25 f4, 100 f3.5 and 50-90 f3.5 Zuikos to select from.

Half frame negative too small?
Nonsense, just make small prints. My standard enlargement for the 18X24mm neg is 6X8 inches on 8X10 paper.

I love (camera)bags and have to many, I dislike carrying a bag so most of the time they end up on the shelf. Most of them are dedicated to a camera / set-up so all I need to do is grab film from the fridge and I`m ready to go.
Unless I intend to take anything else than snapshots I keep my stuff on the shoulder / pocket and it tends to be the Mju II & one extra roll of Portra 400 I bring along + a Swiss army knife and a small plastic zipper bag.  Everything else I might need are either on my phone or where I`m going.

In the bag of the week, let's see, I currently have a Minolta SR-T 101, a Sharpie, a mechanical pencil, a crappy but reliable pressurized ballpoint pen, a bulk rolled cassette of FP4+, a microfiber cloth, a poorly tended shooting notebook from Analogbook, a mysterious 4GB SD card (must be EXIF data for the Minolta), and a surprising lack of headphones. Which means you may see the contents of a different bag this weekend.

Is it just me or we're all taking less gear along with us than we used to?

I feel that having a lot of gear available at all time is a limitation. With just one camera I have 100% focus (sorry  ;D) on the shooting and how to make the most of the time I have available. It's for the same reason I have a total aversion to zoom lenses. I think the more gear I drag along, the fewer pictures I shoot. I often spend some time deciding on what camera to bring, sometimes changing my mind in the last minute. But then I'm stuck with it and have to make it work. Sometimes we need a bit of resistance..........

Ok, that put a rather large smile on my face  ;D So it´s not just me? Good to hear! It´s always a last minute decision here as well. It often results in having to open the fridge several times to change what film to bring, running down stairs with shoes on to grab something and finally leaving the house ten minutes to late for some appointment regretting not having brought the Mju II.

One day last week I got all ambitious and brought 4 or 5 cameras with me, and ended up only using 2 of them. And out of those 2, I think 90% of the shots were on one ;D

I do carry a bag, but it's a nice messenger style camera bag:
for yesterday's walkabout it was loaded with:
-Fujica G6990BL
-Minolta IV F meter
Red, orange and yellow filters,
2 rolls Pan F 50
2 rolls Delta 100

I would call this "packing light" since I used to lug around the Mamiya Press. -now if I'm shooting the 4x5...that requires a dolly.

Yes, it is "Le Lapin Blanc" because Lapin is in the masculine form. If it were a lady rabbit, it would be "La Lapine Blanche" where the added e indicates use of the feminine genre.

As for my bag... this is what I had for WTCD.
And please excuse my mad drawing skills...

As of this moment I have some empty film canisters, a sharpie, some batteries and a lens hood in my bag. The camera is around here somewhere.....
