Fail, Fail, Fail Vol II
« on: September 14, 2015, 07:44:04 PM »
I'm beginning to worry that personal fail posts might become a thing with me...

After farting around the house and wasting most of a beautiful day doing nothing much, I finally convinced the tribe to get out and head downtown for the afternoon. I had been poking at my Bronica SQA, a camera that I have largely, shamefully, ignored since I acquired it, messing with the Polaroid back and trying to nail down the Bronica's functionality so that I could shoot with it without having to fumble.

On our walk we encountered an Indian street festival which offered some good photo ops; food vendors, Indian dancing, and lots of Indian clothing. Next to a park where a flag for every victim of the 9/11 attacks were layed out in two columns along the grass field, representing the Twin Towers. "OK", I thought, "time to to put some shallow DOF into action and have a single flag in focus while the rest blur behind".  Took a few shots there. My kids decided to play about and wrestle one another and I wasted a few frames on them. We then headed to one of the local art museums where I took a few pictures of the building and then placed the camera in my bag and view a great exhibition of American works on paper, sketches, prints and the like.

Upon leaving the museum the late afternoon light looked favorable so I decided to shoot a few more frames. As I was shooting it dawned on me that I had probably taken more than 12 shots... On close inspection, the frame counter was still on 1. Not good. On closer inspection I found that I had not turned the multiple exposure switch off after swapping the Polaroid holder for the 120 back. So every shot that I had taken was on a, now horrifically overexposed, single frame.

"F*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ck, f*ckitty, f*ck, McF*ckpants!" That's a direct quote.

The wonderfully fresh Ramen dinner with the family afterward did much to ameliorate my mood but.... damn.

ouch that is a fail of epic proportions  :-[
But for some reason I can't shoot a single roll with my RB67 without screwing up 1 or 2 frames and the feeling gets worse when you've sent out a film, let's say a roll of velvia 50 or ektachrome 100 (no the numbers are what they cost on ebay although it's not far of...) and when you have your film returned to you and you take a look at your handy work you actually hear the lab specialist looking at it and sighing in your imagination...

That's really gotta hurt!

Lucky for me, the only cameras I have that allow me to do multi exposures either reset the feature at shutdown or are fully manual non interlocked advance.

I have done the EXACT same thing with my Mamiya 645, but as much as it stings, I think "Failure" is a bit of a harsh term for the lessons we learn.  Failure, would be never picking up your camera again after that little mishap. - I chalk it up as "15 frames of education"

Adam, you certainly have a way with words...... :o ;)

I had a similar reaction on our last trip to the Isle of Skye a few years ago when we reached Sligachan Bridge in what is the most beautiful light I've ever seen at that location. Visibility was miles and the Black Cuillin were majestic.  I got the tripod out, metered carefully, loaded up a couple of A12 backs for my recently acquired and little used Blad and, taking my time, got 24 great photos; or so I thought.  As the light faded - to be replaced by clouds and then rain - I unloaded the backs only to find I'd loaded the film inside out (i.e attempting to shoot through the backing paper).  I was, in equal parts, almost suicidal and angry beyond words.

I still get knots in my guts thinking about it, so I definitely share your pain.  Best not to dwell.

I love these cautionary tales. If only I had ever made a mistake, I would contribute!  ::)

I shot a whole roll on my Zero 2000 at a fab location only to discover when I developed the film that the shutter had been permanently open! Lots of swear words too!!

LATE - you loaded the Blad inside out?! Phew - I thought I was the only person in the entire world to have done that. But I went one better. Having only one back with me, I unloaded the film, realised it was inside out, so quickly loaded a second film and repeated the shots, apologising to the model and saying that I was a little stressed. Got home, unloaded the back and I had done it a second time, as I was in such a panic. What to do? I cropped the 135 shots square and she never knew that I'd botched the second roll as well!

Picking up your point about SVLR's blog, I went to YouTube and watched a vid on how to load a Blad back. Easy when you know how & clearly, more fool-proof than the manual I was attempting to follow.
