Filmwastering in the north of the UK
« on: June 11, 2015, 01:24:21 PM »
In the years I've been a FW member, the venues for FW get-togethers have been largely South East / Southern England.  Nothing wrong in that as venues tend to be driven by the and most who have commited to attending are based down here.

However, I wondered if there's any appetite to hold a FW photo day north of Crewe (as an arbitrary place that I've always regarded as start of "the North").

If not, no problem but, if so, I'd be interested to attend and there may be others.....

I wont go to the North. Winter is coming, and the Others march on the wall.

Born and bred in the North so always happy for an excuse to go back home.

Leon, I'm glad I've got my reading glasses with me as the first time I read your response I thought it said "Otters" march on the wall.  Not sure who the "Others" are but they sound a bit more likely than "Otters".  Anyway, you've been to Shetland / Orkney and that's not exactly Surrey......... ::)

I'm in Newcastle and would be game for a meet-up within 50 miles or so.

I've never seen Game of Thrones, but I can report that Berwick has defences against the Scots, who may be similar to Others:

Leon's Others reminded me of the Y2K version of Blackadder where roman soldiers try to defend themselves against the Scots behind a two feet high Hadrian's Wall.
Otherwise not a single bad word about the North, wish I had a chance to go there myself.

Leon - clearly not alone, mate.  In fact, I might be the only one who has only seen 10 minutes of it (the episode when Sean Bean was for the chop) and I haven't seen it since.

Hi Kevin, I lived in Newcastle (well, Holystone on the A131) from 1988 to 1994 and then Perth in Scotland from 1994 to 1999.  I can confirm that "Others" bear a greater resemblance to some of the lasses I saw down the Bigg Market on a Thursday evening than any I saw in Perth  ;D

50 miles from Newcastle gets you to Redcar / Saltburn / North Yorks Moors...?

Did someone mention Orkney? Now that is Norf. I do love the Norf really. The air is cleaner, the light is clearer and the dawns are sweeter. See you in the Ferry Inn in Stromness then?

Love it. Here are some large format Orcadian marvels. All Haitch-Pee-Five_plussed up.

Any further thoughts on this?

If members are only able to travel limited distances I will say with 2-3ish weeks notice I can pretty much be anywhere so I'm happy to travel to accommodate other members

I can also do any Saturday or Sunday with the same notice

Definitely got more thoughts on this.  Much as I love the opportunity to attend the FW meets in the South (by merit of living in Essex), I'm from up North and really need something to give me the impetus to spend time where there's hills and moorland.

The South gang are meeting in Avebury next weekend (everyone invited - hint, hint), so I will be incommunicado 28/29 June.  However, here's a suggestion; how about Whitby / North York Moors coastal area late July / early August?  More than happy to hear alternatives....this has to work for all of us and is not about what I want.

That said, as I live a good distance away and wouldn't want to try to cram travel, etc. into just one day, so I'll need to sort accommodation.  Weekends would be best for me - but I'm happy to go with the majority, so long as I have a little time to sort out work and home commitments.

C'mon guys - get those suggestions and ideas going  :D

Oh what a cool idea
I was speaking with Mrs B and we decided to grab a week in the Northumberland area come Sept time, so if I can make this it will mean more time with her when we go up.
I would say it'll have to be a long weekend to get any worth while time up there and I 'll have a couple of spare seats if you don't mind travelling in a van.

I would be up for this if the dates work. I've wanted to do that bit of coast for some time. The weekends of the 22nd and 29th August might be a problem for me but otherwise I'm pretty flexible.

Anyone got any suggestions for dates?  After 29/08 - i.e. early September works for me.  Probably some nice late summer colour around on the moors at that time.

September would probably rule me out as it's end of financial year for us and I'm not able to take time off and I would have liked to make it a longer trip.

OK, we've sort of signed up to the Cleveland coast / North York Moors as a venue. So, I'll post a poll for dates to see who can do when....

We are up that way for a week starting 14 of Sept so I don't think it would be cool to leave the wife to her own devices for a few days without a vehicle to get about in. I should be okay for another date though.

Apologies one and all, I have been very remiss.

Here we are in August and I feel like I've let the side down.  In my defence, work is taking most of my energy in the week and we've had a load of garden work done / built and painted a new shed, etc. at the weekends.  Consequently, I'm struggling to devote the time to get this one over the line.

Anyone out there prepared to take over the reins for dates / other logistics now that the venue is more-or-less decided?  I'd still love to spend a day / weekend with FWers in the north if the schedule allows.

Don't tempt me, Andrea!!  I lived in Perth for 5 years (still not exactly the Outer Hebrides but I spent many happy holidays around the Highlands and Islands (in every conceivable weather) and would be up there like a shot, given half a chance.
