Un-Stand
« on: April 28, 2015, 08:11:34 PM »
I shot two sheets of 4x5 for WWPD and wanted to develop them and get them up that day, but I didn't want to shoot 4 more sheets just to fill the MOD54 holder. But then I didn't feel like making a full liter of developer just for 2 sheets either. What to do? I decided to make 200mL of 1:100 Adonal and roll my Patterson tank constantly by hand. I know, you're thinking "but WHY??", and the only answer I can think of is "why not?". So I did just that and rolled it while watching a little tv. So I rolled for ~25min at room temp and got pretty good negs (definitely scannable) from Delta 100.

Definitely sit-down development (unless you stand while you watch TV?) :D

Those 800mL of dev thank you for sparing their lives ;)

This sounds like a lie-down-and-roll-over method, it certainly isn't stand-up!. I love your inventiveness James, new techniques are always welcome. If you feel lazy you could always hook it up to an electric motor with a gearbox or adjustable speed.

I'm thinking of hamster or rat powered rollers. That way I don't have to exert myself so much when I'm trying to concentrate on my stories, nor do I have to spend $ on precious electricity!

developing in tubes with minimal developer and constant rolling agitation is definitely a thing. And it works well. And you found this out. Nice.

I definitely need to modify that Cibachrome drum I have that's gathering dust.

Rat powered?? I'm not sure I like the thought of that.......... :o  If you use Polaroid / Impossible integral film (600/SX-70/Spectra) you could power the electric motor with the batteries from the empty packs. There is quite a bit of energy left over in those.

I used to have an old busted turntable that I modded so that it would become an agitator...

It should work and get you all relaxed at the same time ;)

Maybe I should invent a special sleeve that has bumps and ridges on it that we could slip on the tanks to make processing more relaxing  ;D

Throw it in the dryer on "fluff" setting?

I remember in an old Popular Mechanics where they had plans for making a special mount to put the tank on the agitator of the washing machine!

I do all my sheet film in a Unicolor drum on one of their motorized roller bases.  Anything up to 8x10 in 300ml of fluids.  Never tried it for high dilutions like "un-stand" developing (I always do it at 1+50) but I suppose it would work.  Must attempt some HC-110 H and see how that goes.  I guess I'm a bit paranoid about leaving the motor turning longer than necessary, though I do have a couple of spares...

As long as yours doesn't hold together with thread like mine (I got suckered with this one... the base had a broken drive belt and the seller carefully put it back into shape with sewing thread... it held just long enough for me to buy it  >:( )

I always figured that if the motor died and I couldn't fix it, I could disconnect the gear train and rotate the tube by hand.  Thankfully, that day hasn't come yet!

The motor on them is probably something quite standard so repair shouldn't be impossible.

And if all fails, you can always take a cheap remote control car, turn it upsidedown and use that... Though that would most likely be too fast.

I opened one up one time to lube a seized bearing.  It was a smallish motor with some serious reduction gears and a switch to reverse directions and a capacitor. As I recall now, I've also replaced the capacitor (apparently the weak link in these).  But now I think of it, is there a good reason for it to reverse?  Wouldn't it be just as effective constantly turning in one direction?

the back and forth mechanism is to prevent bromide drag.

But for what it's worth, I have the cibachrome base and it only goes one way.

How did you load it into the tank without the two sheets of film interfering with one another? Did you roll them up taco style? Or did you simply insert  the two sheets on opposite sides of the tank?

I develop two sheets of 4x5 in a Patterson tank with the edges touching, emulsion facing the center.  They hold their position pretty well, I just don't get too agressive with the agitation.

You can also process up to 4 using some loose fitting rubber bands and putting the sheets rolled-up in a teardrop shape.
