If you've never seen the work of Mel DiGiacomo, you should look him up. He has a pretty unique vision and he's also an inspiring speaker and very generous of spirit to photographers at all levels and we love having him speak in the Event Space whenever we can get him! Here's something he had to say recently when asked what he's learned:
"I’m still learning. I can’t teach how to see. What I suggest is that one does not cease searching. Some of us learn more quickly than others. Accept that and you’ll be OK. Don’t stop no matter how numerous your mistakes. Mistakes are the building blocks. I don’t look forward to making mistakes, but accept them for what they are; learning tools.
Today, anyone who owns a camera or a smart phone is a photographer, but becoming a photographer with something to say, if you will, is another story. Anyone who owns a pen is capable of writing but, as with photography, having something to say is another story.
Stories don’t come from the pen or the camera. They come from you. Believe in what you’re doing, accept mistakes and rejection. Keep getting up off the mat and keep following your bliss. Passion will prevail."
