I was contacted the other day by Jim Lycett who not only admires my work but makes his own beautiful pinhole cameras.

I like the design but does it use the entire 4x5 negative with the pinhole that close?

it would give you a 145° angle of view...
I think that it would probably cover it all but with a massive light fall-out.

some of the ZERO pinhole 4x5s had the same focal length, didn't they?

yes, 25mm, so it's uber wide....
the coverage area is only 48mm, or just a bit under 2 inches, so the falloff is going to be fairly fast....
I still want one....and I have a mill so may have to experiment a bit!

Wow! Really elegant work. Both the camera and the photographs. I'm near enough done with the construction of another 4X5 pinhole camera but mine looks downright crude compared to his.

Indeed WIDE. I have 60mm on 4x5 and I thought it's very wide. How do you deal with light falloff ?

The light fall off is significant. In the image above I applied some negative vignetting (+11) in Lightroom post processing.
I rarely use the extra wide configuration. I find it very hard to get a useful composition and to get the exposure right so I still have some highlight detail in the center and shadow detail at the rim.

Yes 25mm is uber wide, I have the 2 section Zero 45 but only dare use it at 50mm... I have big feet and I'm sure they would be included at 25mm!!

I am due to see Jim early next year so will enquire more... I'll also ask if he takes orders.

Never tried ultra wide either. With my 4X5 I usually start off at 90mm, that is wide enough with manageable perspective. Might try 65 but nothing wider. For wide I prefer a curved film plane with a 1:2.5 (or more) aspect ratio.

One way to deal with it would be to make a gradual filter for it. Simply exposing a sheet of film to take a picture of a piece of copy paper or bristol board will record the light fall off. Then you can put this sheet in the camera near the film plane in order to record the compensation on all the images...
