INITIATIVE - Postcard exchange and print swap
« on: November 16, 2014, 05:58:20 AM »
Looking at the fun which have members taking part in current postcard exchange looks like it will be nice to have it as a permanent feature on rather regular, I would say monthly, bases. The idea is, that anyone who is willing should have the opportunity to join in more often then occasionally.
There is also second proposal to create Print Swap Club (name is my idea so it is very much optional  :D). A place, where members may let say post theirs prints and look for someone willing to exchange or maybe a lottery.  This is just a raw idea to have such a activity with Filmwasters.com. I don't want to elaborate any more. I hope we will have some sort of discussion from which some conclusion may be drawn.
Cheers.

I would like to exchange postcards with other Filmwasters. I would have to find a way to get them made of course, but otherwise yes I'm in. As for exchanging prints, I may be interested in that too.

It seems like there are a few of us that could trade amongst each other.

After a few rounds of print swaps on various forums I got bored by the idea - especially after I've considered that I really like and care for maybe just 10 -20% of prints I recieved. Since then I've started approaching other photographers and printers with direct offers of straight one-on-one print swaps - and I was approached in this way several times as well. Works best for me. :)
Website of sorts, as well as ipernity thing.

This is an initiative only for now. The form or formula is to be worked out if at all. How you are saying, such an exchange might be disappointing. For both sides. Thanks for your input.

I did have a lot of fun on the last postcard exchange, but I think monthly is too frequent for me to participate. I would definitely contribute when possible, but I think a quarterly exchange would be more interesting to me.

Yes once a month would work out expensive I think I spent about £20 on postage

I haven't done any of the exchanges; the timing just hasn't been right. I would certainly consider the next postcard exchange - the suggestion for a quarterly (or seasonal) schedule would be about as frequent as I could possibly manage, and even then I'm sure I'd only be able to participate in some.

As for prints, it's a bit too much for me to deal with, both in getting mine done and sent, and figuring out what to do with the ones I receive.
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

Well, the idea of monthly exchange was exactly for this reasons. Not everyone has to participate in every one, but it will give much more frequent opportunities to sign up, when, for someone, timing is right. My idea is, that we start to do something somewhat different, than only forum discussions. Eventually it might evolve in genuine print exchange on more peer to peer bases.
Off course coordinating it would require some additional work so it is important, what the bosses gonna think about

I'd be in for another postcard exchange.

Making real prints is still not working well for me (too little time and skill and a darkroom that is limited to a bathtub).

It is optimistic, that you refer to them as a real prints. As opposed to inkjet printouts. Like everything fine art printing requires skills and equipment, but for simple "postcard" exchange "bathtub darkroom" is more, than enough. My first ever "printing session" was done at night in the corner and on the floor of my bedroom (I was 15 at the time) where the closet door shielded against luckily weak street light and red T-shirt was acting as a filter for red light. And guess what: 14 years later I still had those pictures in my possession, memories of my big Boys Scouts camp.  ;D
