Finally, an Epson V800

I say "Finally" not because the V700 is not wonderful, but because it has been around for a while (I have seen reviews of it dating back to 2006).

Some differences:
  • LED lighting for more consistency as the device ages (I have noticed ours are dimming) and quicker startup
  • new film holders, which is great as the old ones kind of suck. They will include an 'anti newton ring' plate to flatten the negs. A downside is it looks like you will only scan three strips of 135 vs the 4 strips the V700 can do
  • of course they claim the resolution and dmax are ramped up

Hallelujah!! Now maybe the V700 prices will drop and I can afford one.  :P

V800 is the GTX-980 in some markets, there is also another minor update to the V600 (GTX-820) GTX-830.

Good to see life in the scanner market. The new film holders sound interesting - I always thought they were the weakest link in the chain.

Ya me too. I particularly do not like the old 120 holders so I am keen to see the new ones if they have changed. On one hand I regret that the 135 holders look that they only hold three strips instead of the old ones that hold four. But on the other hand, like you said they are not great so I think I will take a good three strip holder to a bad four strip one!

Now I just need to find out where Phil is sending his Xmas request and see if I can add one too! (Haha, Mike I guess I could get you do suggest Michelle buy me one, but we are too broke right now! I think Santa has to get it for me)

My V700 has been having issues scanning film. Lid light doesn't come on now most of the time and scanning is super grainy when it does. Still scans polaroids fine but i think i'm about done with it. Next scanner will just be a $200 job. This one lasted maybe three years at most.

That's too bad. We have had a couple of v700s out in a computer lab and they have been tanks (like all the Epson scanners we have had) - knock on wood.

The V700/750 scanners really are very good, especially with the betterscanning holders. Can't see that the new machines, with their collimated LED light sources, are going to be an improvement. I really like the smooth-but-sharp quality of the scans I get from the V750.

Yeah I think the v550 is LED, so i will probably get a v500 or v600, which are both old style bulbs. I can't say the v700 scanned polaroids better, but i did see a difference in the medium format, and it as nice to be able to scan 4x5 once in awhile. But I'm not spending another $600+.

I have been taking advantage of a V700 at work, so but hope to have a home unit soon and hope it will be the v800. Actually I am looking forward to the LED lighting. Now our units at work are pretty old (right from when they came out) and are used a lot but I am sure that the lights are starting to age. We have an ancient (and excellent) Epson 11x17 scanner (an 1860XL) that is over a decade old and its bulb it really going. It is just used for scanning maps etc to digitize so it keeps on going, aging bulb or not  ;)
