DIY Rodinal
« on: July 02, 2014, 04:50:26 PM »
For those out there who want to try Rodinal and cant find it. Or those who like the concept of caffenol but are looking for something else...

I was skimming around youtube yesterday and stumbled upon this. Not sure if it works but would be interesting to try!

Sweet! I have a full bottle of Adonal, but when that is gone, I'll be making more in the kitchen sink! Thanks for the link.

The below link has the same recipe plus one for a fixer.  It says not to use an acid fixer with the DIY Rodinal.  I may try this when I run out but since I'm just doing stand development that may be a while.

I know that the sodium hydroxide can produce a pretty violent reaction. It's actually recommended to keep a bowl of ice water nearby in case the solution reaches the boiling point.

Also, the formula is said to produce crystals that stay at the bottom of the bottle. But apart from that, it just works.

The formula often goes by the name acetaminophenodinal.

Yup, I remember from my molecular biology days that mixing NaOH in water is a very exothermic reaction. Never had a solution boil, but definitely got too hot to hold at times.

I also use Parodinal since my Adox-Adonal suddenly died after "only" 4 years of use. The Digitaltruth recipe is the one from Donald Qualls iirc that I also use with success:

250 ml water
15 g Paracetamol = 30 tablets
50g sodium sulfite
20 g sodium hydroxide

It's a tiny little bit stronger than original Rodinal, so 13 - 14 g Paracetamol might be sufficient. The starch of the tablets are a filler forming a quite ugly mud. Let it sit for about 1 - 2 weeks and decant the solution from the mud. The mud might congest any filter immediately. The consitancy of the mud will differ depending of the used tablet brand.

Add the hydroxide slowly in small quantities as said before, if adding all at once the mix might boil and splash in your eyes.

I never had crystals and I can't imagine why acidic stop bath or fixer should cause problems. Results can not be distinguished from Rodinal developed negs. As with Rodinal temps below 20 °C with adjusted times improve the results.

I can't see why acid fixers would be a problem either. The developer is completely washed and neutralized by the stop bath. And fixer just removes the undeveloped silver in the image.

Also, if you mix this stuff, wear safety goggles!
It would be pretty dumb for someone who works with his eyes to loose them making developer...

don't panic about sodium hydroxide: just respect it.

But in case you get burned in hands or in eyes, wash thoroughly during fifteen minutes under tap water.

The original stuff is probably cheaper in a sense.
But if you're stuck at a place where you can't get Rodinal, it's nice to know you can always improvise something that's just as good.
