20 June and the weekend is here . . .
« on: June 20, 2014, 02:07:06 PM »
Hi all,

The heat is collecting in Philly and the kids have resorted to sunset splashing in the fountains.  I love this time of year.

Have a great weekend,

Jeff

What a great start to the weekend. Love Jeff's fountain shot and Charles' sunset but Robclarke's first is just delightful.

Sorry I'm late here, I had to develop my weekend shots ;)

As alluded to elsewhere on these pages, I wanted to try out TMax just for the hell of it. And I think I like it! Maybe better than Tri-X ... it seems to like skies and clouds better, a little contrastier, as if I already had a yellow filter on it (these were taken on my XA, so no filters). I tried using HC100 dil H 9min like Tri-X, but it looks like TMax needs a little more development time. Kodak recommends 6min at dil B, so I guess 12min for dilH? I have another roll I'll try that on, then I gotta burn through my brick of Tri-X and maybe return to TMax after that.

Indofunk - it's really weird you should say that I've just been through exactly the same process and, although the jury's still out, I think I'm going to come to almost the opposite conclusion. I've developed mine in HC-110, although I used dilution B, and I felt that mine were a little less contrasty than Tri-X. Contrast is what I'm after. I know Kodak recommend the TMax developer and I wondered if that was the problem.

My real issue is I was using Tri-X (which I liked) when I fell head-over-heals for Neopan 400 - about four weeks before Fuji announced they were discontinuing it. I thought about buying a stock for the fridge - but that always feels a bit like building your house on shifting sand. So I thought maybe TMax is the nearest alternative, but it's not working for me at the moment. I have about a dozen rolls in the fridge, if you weren't on a different continent I might suggest doing a trade for some Tri-X.  :-\

Let me try TMax in dil H for a full 12 minutes and see what I think. Also, I might have to try Rodinal again (which I HATE on Tri-X) for comparison.

T-max has a steeper contrast curve than Tri-X, so yes it is more contrasty. It also has finer and more even grain than Tri-x.

I find a lot of users of Tmax 400 have such heavy contrast that it almost detracts from the final image in most cases. I know of one in particular. I would assume he was using D76 for his development.

Usually I don't butt in to how people want to scan their images. If it looks good to you, then thats all that matters.

But if you are wondering, I like the dynamic range and look that film can give. It kind of sucks when someone crushes away all of that detail and blows out highlights by upping contrast.

Your images posted above don't seem to have that "crushed" look. It's still good to me. Perhaps Tmax vs Tri-X has a different sensitivity to certain color wavelengths that give you a different look? I also find that the XA has a fairly good meter on it. Exposure is usually pretty good. I use my XA for testing film dev times sometimes because I know how reliable the meter is.

I'm still very much in the learning stages of photography in general, and especially developing and optimizing for screen. So I appreciate any constructive criticism I can get :)

I use my XA as a "field meter" when using meterless cameras :)

It could also be due to the scanning.
From a recent experience with some Arista 400 (Foma), not all B&W films play nice with the scanner. It was the case with the Arista (which has a contrast curve pretty similar to that of TMX). The tones are so compacted that the scanner tends to give the images a high contrast look that is almost lith like in some cases.
