Next South UK FW walk, shoot, eat and drink location?
« on: March 10, 2014, 07:27:03 PM »
So ... we have photographica coming up, but it woud be nice to have a day of taking photos organised for soon too?

If so, any thoughts on locations?

throw some ideas at me (not literally)

Leon.

It would, especially now that the waters appear to be receding under the brightening sun of springlight.  Where indeed?

Excellent timing Sir, I was only thinking the same yesterday. It's a while since I've been able to attend one of these trips. How about Oxford, we never did get there?

Okay, so it's going to be Easter mid-April and with that little bundle of joy comes a whole heap of traffic-related and school break chaos. So, my suggestion would be to hold this sometime on or after 26/27 April.  As that will (hopefully) be just about the time that Bluebells are starting to come into bloom, might we aim for a renowned venue where we could shoot them early morning?  Paul Mitchell's done some lovely shots in Micheldever Woods, NE of Winchester (which could also act as a venue for the midday and afternoon - lots of history, pubs, food, etc)??  Maybe even a bit of New Forest action...??

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking,"

Isle of Sheppey?

I would seriously avoid Micheldever at bluebell time... I was there before dawn, on a weekday and there were still 20+ togs already there!

Sheppey! interesting. There is much to take in, but not the most salubrious of locations. Let me have a think. I'm interested though :)

Another place I'd quite like to explore is around the south Essex coast and creeks - the Blackwater and Crouch for example, Foulness, North Fambridge, those kind of little places ... or up to Maldon? That is Paul J's manor, so maybe he can think about locations?

Somewhere we havent been yet I guess.

Maldon is a great place to start, an interesting town and lots to do down by the Quay... and did I mention the pubs too!

About 20 mins away is Tollesbury. Some interesting old yacht store buildings and an old lightship too!

Actually, Paul, that might just be a great idea. I've been down here 15 years and never visited Heybridge Basin or Tollesbury and, as per your shot of the boat, I'm led to believe there's a lot of interesting stuff round-about.  There's also supposed to be a few decent eateries in that neck of the woods.

Another option might be Mersea Island or even Tilbury Fort.....??

As for crashing at our place, I'll have to ask our cats' permissions first  ;)

lets not rule out Oxford as a contender too. I guess we need to cover all opportunities for our people photography friends as much as for us landscapers?

Absolutely.  I'm more than happy to go with the majority call on this one.  Anything I suggest is nothing more than that; a suggestion.

Absolutely, I'm ashamed to say that I live only about 40 mins away and have never visited the centre of Oxford... yet...

I've spent happy photography days visiting North Fambridge as well as Maldon and Tollesbury - West Mersea and Brightlingsea have their potential too. I've never found anything really photogenic at Burnham though. Sheppey has Queenborough, which is photogenic, otherwise the rest not so that I've found.

For non-drivers (or driving hating in my case) even if we end up in the back of beyond, a train station nearby at the start of the meet would be appreciated. So that's sort of a nod to Oxford.

As well as people, Oxford also offers the canal and a few miles away, landscape opportunities at an old (disused) nunnery where I may have taken some nudes early one morn. Conveniently next to a pub with views (the nunnery - not the nude).

As I drove home past the Olympic park last night I thought that it would be a good place to visit. I think that it's fully open around April time and it has some wonderful and funky architectural buildings and details that when shot in the way could be quite eye opening. Transport links shouldn't be a problem (even for me who hates the tube)but I not sure about refreshments. Maybe someone who attended the games can throw some light on the length of time it would take to get aboutthe place.

If you end up in the Plympic Park I might actually be able to make it to one of these. So, that's a vote for the Olympic Park.

Yes, Lara and I met up with Graham Darlington (Wensleydale Blue) a couple of times - once in Bradford and once in the Yorkshire Dales.  There may have been others but not involving Lara or myself.....

I'd really like to meet-up and share some snaps and beers. Can we set a date and a location? Oxford? London? Happy to go to either

what are the likelihoods that we'll suffer a few security intrusions if we are using tripods and 5x4 s in the olympic park?

Good point Leon.

I produced a video for a band which required the crew to film at Piccadilly Circus. Sure enough, The Law arrived within 5 minutes, but the bloke was very decent. I did have my (British) passport with me that day, just so that I could prove my ID if asked to, but sense prevailed in it remained in the camera bag all day.

I do like the idea of a laser-guided whatever being concealed in a 5x4 and the no doubt sturdy tripod. But if were real anarchists, I'd hold your 54 for for you while you beat up security using the nearest tripod leg as an offensive weapon. Or it might be easier if you held my Blad and I went in to bat with my monopod.

Just to add to the mix... a good friend of mine has just produced a superb set of images in and around the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford which is quite tog friendly apparently.

I've posted the poll, Leon.  No-one has offered up an alternative weekend, so I've just shown 26/27 April.  If people have a preference for Saturday or Sunday, no doubt they'll say....
