Daylesford Photo Biennale
« on: June 11, 2007, 01:18:53 PM »
Well, I've just gotten back to home base after spending a couple of days in the countryside north west of Melbourne where I was fortunate enough to catch just a small portion of the program for the Daylesford Photo Bienniale
I say a small portion, because this event is on such a broad scale and spread out over the whole month of June, that it would be impossible to catch all of the exhibitions, seminars etc in one weekend. Check out the link and see what I mean ~ I actually don't think it would be possible even in a month, but in two years time I'm going to try!
I took my wife and two girls (which was both a blessing and a hindrance) but one of the highlights for me was seeing the wonder in my children's faces when they walked into the Camera Obscura set up at Anderson's Mill (one of the many venues) and saw how it actually worked inside a camera (and then had great fun taking turns waving to the other inside from the outside of the camera obscura building)!
I saw some great photographic exhibitions, but not nearly enough as I would have liked. I was fortunate that I met up with Don (db) who had been there ahead of me and gave me a few hints as to some of the more interesting events to catch in my limited time, one being "Goodbye 665" by Tobiaz Titz (one of his images is on the main page of the dfb link) which would appeal to the Polaroid aficionados here, but there was so much more to see that I'm already making plans to go back before months end to catch up on some things I just didn't have time to see. Now I'm going to crash into my bed...

Below is a Polaroid of the aforementioned Don in front of the Glenlyon Shire Hall where the "Goodbye 665" exhibition opened, taken on my 600SE with 75mm lens and 125i (expired) film...

Cameron, great review (the enthusiasm is coming through loud and clear) and a wonderful snap of Snappy "The" Don Brice. Not only that, but we get to see the comedy name of the century in print on our forum....all of which adds up to making this one of the finest FW forum posts ever. Congrats Dad, you're top of the pops in London town this afternoon  ;D ;D

[[To those who know me well....yep, too much coffee again]]

Anyway, I decided that we needed a permanent record of the lovely photo of Don so I blogged it. Permalink at http://filmwasters.tumblr.com/post/3302974 - hope I got the description right.

Can I make it over to Aus in 2 years time I wonder? Would Jacqui and the kids be able to entertain themselves for a week or two while I lost myself in photography heaven? We have friends Down Under that we're long-overdue seeing, and Don has promised to buy me a beer...hmmm. Definitely something to consider.

Might be worth taking advatage of the central location and easy access that Australia offers and organise a Filmwasters event in Daylesford in 2009 (it'll be here before you know it)  ;D

Well, if you can't make it to Australia in 2 years, you probably could make it to Montreal this September (or in 2 years)... Photo month will be from September 6th to October 21st this year.

And this year promises to be a bountiful event with more than 30 solo exhibits across the city.

The program is not out yet (it will be officially published in August), but since it is the event's 10th anniversary, you can expect some world class stuff.

And if you decide to go, you'll have the chance to taste the best Smoked Meat in the world and the best Bagels in the universe! (and yes, they are that good!)

Here's the official website (available in both English and French as usual)

Film is the vinyl record of photography.

heh- Thanks Cam.
I should have guessed that snap would turn up here  :-\ I think the tiredness of, at that stage, three days of intensive festivalling (uh-oh- little red line says computer doesn't know this verb, I do wish spell check would try and keep up), and Ed, this means not enough coffee for me is showing in my body language there..

My head still reeling. I must have visited about 30 of the exhibitions dotted through the beautiful Daylesford highlands, as well as two seminars and one workshop- all inside four days. And to intensify the experience, I was staying in a rented cottage with up to seven photographers, film makers, art lecturers and exhibitors, so everything we had seen and done was discussed, compared, and enthused about, around the fire along with home cooking and much red wine.

And if you weren't doing this at the cottage, there was always the festival club, where a speaker, convener or artist could be bought, with a drink , until late in the night. The art philosophy and impassioned photography discussion only stopped after I dropped off the last person home at 11.00pm last night. We solved most of the worlds problems during our 8 hour drive back to Adelaide.

I'll post a review of the pinhole workshop and links to the best artists I saw, once I've had a day or two to do some mental filing.

Cam, I'll email you a list of the other "must see" exhibitions for you  check out on yr return visit.

Daylesford? I may even be able to find the place without a Melway. I'll be there. Someone make a note to make it happen, hopefully this place will still be around to announce and coordinate.

Love the db portrait too. The stoic look. The Shire Hall, and something about the color! Damn I like expired 125... Skj.
