Film dev question. Old HP5+
« on: September 25, 2013, 06:08:40 PM »
Mate from work found a camera with a roll of HP5+ in and has asked me to dev it... he has no idea how old it is.

As its HP5+ that means its more recent than 1990 ish?     Im going to drop it in Rodinal 1/100 for 90 Mins, does that sound ok?

any other suggestions

HP5+ started in the 1990's, the 80's still had the non plus. for basic stand dev sounds about right. maybe colder temperature?

That depends on what he's after. For that classic punk rock look, HP5+ in PQ Universal can do wonders... but you either love it or hate it.

nothing useable.....

very feint images at one end of the roll and nothing at the other, so presume its been partially unwound at some point?

If it's been unwound, it's going to be black.

It could very well simply be too old. Few people know that film actually degrades faster once it's been exposed. I guess it has to do with the added charge of the exposed silver that makes it more unstable.

When I find a film in an old camera I'm usually undecided about what to do with it. The last couple of times I've had it developed but the results weren't really worth it (more to do with the images than the quality of the old film). There's one in the Exa i've just got, 25 frames exposed, but I think I'll just ditch it.

And then you'll just bite your fingers for the rest of your life!

I always process found film. I do color in B&W paper developer in case some of the images are unmentionable (but it hasn't happened so far).
I agree that 99% of the images are usually crap. But then, there's the odd one that's pure gold.

I decided to ditch it, opened the camera and it was empty. No idea why it said 25, unless it moves that on even when the camera is empty.
