Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

I was one of the folks stating that one shot per weekend thread would be a good thing, and I am torn about which image to post  ::)

But here is my pic...

lomochrome test -01 by dsmccrac, on Flickr

I was torn what to post because this is my first roll of Lomochrome film and some of the results were pretty interesting. These are not heritage tomatoes by the way  ;) the purple tomatoes are light green unripe fruit. It is interesting that the lighter, less saturated greens pump out as purple but the dark greens still hold their colour.

Legal Disclaimer: Speaking of 'torn', I am also torn about this film from an 'artistic ethics' perspective. I can buy into using films for purposes that they are not intended -- such as IR or surveillance film, being used in ways that were not foreseen. Similarly, I can sort of buy in to intentional 'misuse' of existing films, such as Xpro or Redscale. But this is a film where this has been done intentionally, and it feels a bit like when folks add 'film scratches and dust' in Final Cut Pro (which I cannot stand). Anyways, I don't wish to steer this thread into a discussion of 'film ethics', but clearly I need to defend my use of this film (mainly to myself, haha).

Lovely stuff with that IR film Jonas.  Got to try that....

McDuff, I too hate the fake scratches and dust.  But some image manipulations I like--including your lomochrome shots.  Is putting a filter on the lens any different, in the grand scheme?  If you've considered what your film stock or filter will do when exposure is made does that not make it a conscious aesthetic choice and a legitimate tool?  You could make a b&w print and paint it with dyes and get a similar effect; would that be any different?  I guess what I hate about the fake scratches is the fact that they're so BAD.  I mean real old scratchy film prints don't look like that.  The effect was clearly designed by someone with no knowledge of films and especially of projectors to know how the scratches happen.  But mostly I dislike the implicit assumption that the difference between video and film is that film is scratchy.

A triumphant return, JPC.  What mount is that on the K88?  I may have a lens or two that you're welcome to...

On the subject of skip-diving, I recently found a Kodak Carousel projector in someone's rubbish and got it working again.  Not as handy as a free scanner, but I'm pleased nonetheless.

Thank you Terry  :)
The Kiev 88 has a bit of a weird mount, something like a screw mount crossed with a bayonet, it was supposedly nicked from the Hasselblad 1000. If you do just happen to have any lenses I could probably take them off your hands, lol!  Cheers  :)

JPC: I know the mount well--used to have a Salyut (pre-K88) and I'm pretty sure I have some of the more exotic focal lengths in a box somewhere.  I'll have a root-around and see what turns up.

Update: found a couple of lenses--sent you a PM

Hi all, I've been away from filmwasters for a while. I have finally finished college, which incidentally almost killed my interest in photography all together (another story for another day).
I have started using film again and I finally have a scanner (saved from the skip, lol). Here are a couple of shots from a Kiev 88 I acquired a couple of weeks ago, Kodak Tmax 400 in FD10.

The flower is gorgeous.

Nice photos, Irv. I really like the way Provia 100f looks. It always seems very neutral compared to the likes of Velvia. Actually, I've just bought 10 rolls of 35mm version to come with us on the imminent trip down Route 66. Most of the trip will be shot on Ilford XP2 Super but any stuff that "must be colour" will be committed to Provia.

Ditto that--some crackin' bike shots, especially the last one.

I like that Castle Hill shot, Windy--the tonal range is superb.  I'd have expected the cloud details to have washed out but there they are.  Nice work and beautifully composed.

Thanks.  I'm really pleased with this combination of pushing Tri-X 1.5 stops in the Canonet and developing with Xtol.  Gives me the low light grain and textures I was looking for.  And works nicely in daylight, too (daylight shots on the same roll were rated ASA 800, the limit of the Canonet's meter setting so they were over-exposed a half stop or so which, of course, doesn't really matter).
