Pacifist Pop Quiz
« on: September 19, 2013, 03:19:45 PM »
With all the turmoil in the international news, I thought I'd inject some wistful levity.

Which nation(s) would you rather photobomb?

Iran and Cuba are at the top of my list.

Andrea.

All over-consumerist capitalist nations.

Cuba is lovely and full of wonderful images already. Can't say about Iran as have not been there but I hear that's nice too.

Mostly everywhere in the world is lovely - as are the peoples. Just some groups of peoples seem to think they are better than others. I shan't mention which ones.

Oh gosh!  So many places I'd like to see, but at the top of my list is also Cuba.

I really wish I could go there.

I've just had a bit of a windfall with a small life assurance endowment policy that's matured. Assuming I'm still around to do it next year (and I'm still gainfully employed), I will definitely be going to Cuba before Fidel pops his clogs and his brother sells out - and Starbucks, KFC and MacDonalds open shops on every street corner. Yuk..... :-[

Apparently, because Cuban farmers cannot afford toxic weedkillers, fertilisers and the like, the seas around Cuba are almost pristine - which is ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. My mask, snorkel and fins are primed and ready to go.

Iran was also mentioned. I remember seeing photographs of Isfahan on The Silk Route and would dearly love to visit. Assuming the regime continues to modernise and commit to a peaceful future, that would be a close second on my list of places to visit.

Having just taken a two day trip up't north and had the pleasure of driving around the Peak District, surrounding areas and visiting a couple of NT sites, I'm more than happy in the knowledge that there's more to offer in this country to photograph than I'd ever manage to.

Or India.

The Hawaiian island of Kauai was pretty damn spectacular. I'd love to go back sometime, but probably never will.

As a fully-paid-up Northerner, I can but agree with your comments. If you haven't been there yet, wait until you visit the Scottish highlands, Outer Hebrides, Inner Hebrides, Scottish Borders, Northumberland, Lake District, North Yorks Moors and Yorkshire Dales (to name but a few...)

I keep telling Lara that we need never leave the UK for a holiday - but she keeps insisting that we get to see the Sun occasionally..... 8)

Yep, The Hebrides are rather lovely  8) I can vouch for that. Just had a nice qi gong sesh before driving back along the beach edges home [in the rain!].
Don't come here though. It's my secret. Not even I tell anyone - not even you!!!!

As for the Isle of Sheppy - should it go the way of Slough?

The Hawaiian island of Kauai was pretty damn spectacular. I'd love to go back sometime, but probably never will.

I was lucky enough to do some traveling pre-kid, and have a soft spot for Maui, especially the wet side.

I'd love to go back to Cumbria as well and spend the day shooting St. Mary of Furness. And I saw Birdoswald but not Willowford, even though it was a stone's throw away. When you live in a young nation, anything old is a marvel.

And, someday I'll figure out where it was, but I was on a very slow train to Badajoz, somewhere in Extremadura, and we passed a set of Roman ruins along a riverbank where the local kids were swimming. It was random and haunting and idyllic all at once, and probably an hour's walk from the nearest town.

At least a half-dozen countries I've been and gone in the dip between photography obsessions, and I'd love to go back and photograph them all. Not a one I wouldn't live in given half the chance. Hard to say whether I'm more sad that I may never see them again, or that there are entire countries where I might not be allowed to go.

Mostly everywhere in the world is lovely - as are the peoples.

Agreed.

Hard to say something without getting political. If I could I would love to go again to Norway, especially the north-western part, and to Namibia with its unique desert. Yes, we should care much more for our beautiful planet, we don't have a spare one. But I'm rather hopeless, much too many people, all want some prosperty and who could refuse them honestly?

I would love to go just about anywhere.

But firstly New Zealand. I want to see what it is I missed out on. The family were set to emigrate from the UK in 1979, but my mum and dad had a final and decisive falling out just weeks before the transport cases were to be picked up, resulting in my mum upping and leaving for Norway with my sister and I in tow.

I would also love to go back to Namibia, the Etosha, the Naukluft, the vleis, the desert in general. Unbelievably beautiful country. And the best barbecue (brai) on the planet, if you happen to believe the Namibians, which I do.

I lived in Istanbul for three years and had my Pentax with me (at the time, it was my only camera) but I didn't really take a lot of pictures. I think I was a little too traumatized at first, and after that, most of my energy was spent on trying to adjust. It kills me now when I think of the pictures I could have taken, not only in Istanbul but almost anywhere in Turkey (well, maybe not Ankara. It's a fairly drab, uninspiring city.) I haven't been back since I left in 2001 - not for lack of desire, but of opportunity and funds - but whenever I go back (and I do intend to), I'm definitely going back a big supply of film!

For landscapes, I tend to prefer ocean shots, so I'd say I'd like to shoot in any country with a coastline. Chile comes to mind, as does Thailand or Vietnam. For people or street? Well, that's anywhere, really!

I'm easily satisfied and I want to visit as many of the Greek islands as possible. My wife is Greek so it should be doable. But it will have to wait a few years as you don't want to be stuck with sick kids on a random small island with no hospital and only one doctor :) Oh and Scandinavia of course (where I met my wife). A grand tour with stops wherever a filmwaster lives :)

I always fancied the USSR as it was - I even started learning the language years ago with an ex but we split up before we went. I duly met up with my now wife and never went but would still like to now.

Paraguay.

I used to do abit of business there and had some interesting trips.  Haven't been there for 15 years but downtown Asuncion was like a Graham Green novel.  I've always wanted to go back and travel around the country with my Holgas -  especially along the Paraguay and Parana Rivers.

One day.

Anywhere, where they are not killing each other in the name of this, that, or the other.

Havana, and Petra are high on my list of places I would love to see.  China and Tibet rank high as well.
