A highly improbable occurrence

A month or so ago I submitted several photos for an exhibition in LA called 'Urban Landscape' and the photo below was one of them.  I've just had an email from the guy in the foreground, who turns out to be a writer for a magazine in NYC and wants a print for his office.  A friend of his in LA happened to go along to the same gallery, saw the photo and recognized him, got my email from the gallery owner, etc.

Wow, firstly congratulations for getting your shots into an exhibition. I really like the shot by the way. But what's really brilliant is he's a writer and he's carrying his book? Either way as you say highly improbable!

I love stories like this. Wonderful. There was a fantastic episode of This American Life recently where they did a whole show on coincidences. He mentioned that that's Steve Jobs' autobiography he's carrying.  He also said he was wearing his 'get me through Times Square before I punch a tourist' face.  I have had that face on too.

It was the Bronica ETRS with Portra 160 in it.  Shot this with and without foreground pedestrians, but liked the sense of scale the figure brings to the overhyped commercial madness that is Times Square.

At least its someone in the creative field who understands. Some folks try to demand likeness usage rights and some such monetary gain.

This guy just wants a print to hang--not only is that easy to do, it's really flattering.  Many years ago I was writing a book and wanted to get rights to a still from Beacon Films.  I asked them for permission and a fee quote, citing the academic nature of the book, etc. and they wrote back a nice note saying I should go ahead and use the still and their fee would be a copy of the book.  Sadly, they're gone now but it made me a fan.
