This is the information thread for the first ever Great British Filmwasters Camp-Off

(as in staying in tents, not who likes Judy Garland the most, although some of us might of course like Judy, and are welcome to come along too ... ok, this is getting awkward now)

Location - South Wales (see below itinerary)

Date - 29 June 2013 (camping fri and sat nights)

Camp Site - www.acorncamping.co.uk (book asap as they fill up quickly this time of year, although do have spaces as at 14.5.2013)

Directions - You can drive there via Junction 33 and Cardiff and swing around the coast, but it's probably faster to leave the M4 at Junction 35, near Bridgend, and follow the A473 until it meets the A48 and then head towards Cowbridge.  At Pentre Meyrick take the B4268 to Llantwit Major.

Itinerary - (thanks to Sandeha)

For a dawn shoot at the lowest tide, the Caisson at West Aberthaw would be excellent.  It's a short distance back towards Cardiff and there is parking at the beach.  For a more leisurely start, there is a rocky beach close to the Acorn site.  It doesn't seem to have a proper name but on the Google Maps close up 'The Beach Cafe' is marked.  Easy parking.

The lighthouses at Nash Point, (south of Marcross) might be the main meeting point at say, 9.30-10.00.  Parts of the beach would still be accessible as the tide comes in, but the highlight (pun alert) would be the lighthouses themselves on their rocky promontory.  Incidentally, early morning there is often a neat veil of mist across the channel, with the hilltops of Devon rising above it in the distance.

One could easily spend a couple of hours at Nash Point, and fair coffee is available at the Horseshoe Inn at Marcross, just back up the road.  We could even have lunch there as well.

After lunch, we can head to Dunraven Bay.  The tide will still be up, but the walled garden of Dunraven Park is worth exploring first, both for the layout of the demolished mansion and for the views across the coast.  Lots of parking space, but there is a charge at weekends.

If anyone gets bored waiting for the tide to go out again, a short trip away beyond Ogmore-by-Sea there are the ruins of Ogmore Castle.  It's a Cadw site and entry is free.  And in late afternoon, Dunraven Bay itself can take up many hours.

Dinner, tbc.

Tides, rocks, and grassy slopes need good footwear.

-------------------------------------------------------

Camping is non-compulsory. Day-trippers, and B&Bers are more than welcome. If the whole day is not-viable, then join us along the way :)

Let us know if you are attending in this thread so we can keep an eye out for you.

Any campers, PM me your mobile numbers and I'll return mine so we can catch up on the site. I'm heading down Friday and staying until Sunday - dawn shoots on Sat and Sun am :)

Looking forward to seeing old faces and meeting new.

Booked for Fri and Sat. The woman at the campsite has cottoned on to the fact there is a bunch of photographers descending on them!

Sod the disco, I need somewhere to plug my darkroom trailer in. (I wish I had one - we could do printing workshops .... there's a thought - anyone want to finance a travelling darkroom?)

I'd suggest cyanotypes or salt prints but knowing our luck there'd be no sun. And also I've failed miserably at every attempt so far! :)

Now there's an idea a travelling dark room. We could get an old caravan and convert it! And we could also convert it into a giant pinhole camera for a giggle?

As I don't have a usable tent at the moment, Lara and I will be spending Saturday night in a B&B about 8 miles west of Llantwit Major at Ogmore by Sea (very close to Dunraven Bay).

We'll be setting off at silly o'clock on Saturday morning with a view to arriving there as close to 08:00 as possible.

Paul Mitchell and Leon have my mobile number (and I have theirs). However, as I'm on the "3" network (which I think means there are only "3" places in the UK where you can get a signal) it would be very useful to know roughly where to come and find you on Saturday morning.....

A shooting at dawn on the Sunday morning sounds like a jolly jape......

Hi Paul - looking at the itinerary, we'll be finishing off at the Caisson at West Aberthaw or at the Nash point lighthouse at 8.

Sunrise is 4.59 and sunset 21.33, local summer time.

As I live about an hour away, for anyone travelling in Saturday morning, I'll be at Nash Point from 9.00.

With a flask, as I notice the Horseshoe Inn doesn't open till 12.00.   ;)

Superb Damion! Just tell the respective domestic consultees that you are required to come. It is non-negotiable, compulsory and necessary.

That always works for me (cough).

PS - make sure you bring the Obscura.

Bugger :o I'm in jolly Crete and missing all this. Wll try and organise some accommodation upon my return this weekend. I don't do tents, it's a long traumatic story of floating sleeping bags when I was small. I will be there though, hopefully for the Friday night so that I can boogie down at the pinhole disco?

So far, then, that's:

Sandeha
Leon
Paul M.
Steve S.
Moiz A.
Late Dev and Lara
Phil B.

And I'm sure more to follow once the various domestic committees are paid off ...

I'm going to suggest The Watermill for dinner on the Saturday evening.  If that's OK, and once a number is confirmed, I'll book space.

Miles 'barrowman' Davies wasn't it?

God news - I have an interview for a fulltime post where I work. Bad news, its an all day affair and is on the 28th. I'm still hoping to come to Wales that evening, but I'm really hoping the long days will have kept enough light for me to gt the tent up by the time I arrive.

It's not long after a full moon, so you should have some light for your tent pegs.   ;D

Yep, good luck with it.

(Oh, you better notify the campsite so that they keep the weredogs properly leashed.)

Not sure if many have read the "Postcard" thread but my best mate died of a massive heart attack at work on Monday the age of 55. His funeral is Friday 28th and Lara and I must be there. As mentioned in the other thread, I can't look at a camera let alone think about enjoying myself taking photos. Therefore, regretfully, I'm withdrawing from what I'm sure will be a great weekend away.

I won't be around for a short while. Back as soon as my chin is off the deck. Hope you have a great time in S Wales and don't forget to cook sausages thoroughly before eating them if you have a BBQ. Hope the weather is benign for you.

Regards, Paul.

I hope you all have a great time and I look forward to seeing your pics!

Stuff happens, and that's sad and frustrating.  The weather's not too bad and even a small group can have fun.

HOWEVER.  Should anyone prefer to postpone the meet for a further two weeks, (or three or four) I'd second such a proposal.

Especially those folks coming from afar or stuck between school dates or whatever, please be quick to state your preference.

That's a bummer Leon, hope that the stuff sorts itself out.

Sandeha - I'm easy about dates but we'd better make a decision soon as we need to cancel the campsite.

That's a shame Leon, I was looking forward to driving you nuts with questions!

I'd prefer to keep this weekend on if possible. Ramadan starts the weekend after that so I'll be unavailable till August and even then it would probably end up clashing with family holiday stuff.

Back home after a great weekend. Many thanks to Sandeha for organising the day and pointing us to some great locations.

A special thanks to Paul and Steve for their patience with me as I inundated them with questions.

It was very much a learning experience for me and I learnt many things to help me on my way, most importantly, that if I'm going to be photographing on the beach I'm going to need wellies!

Cheers all and thanks Leon for suggesting a meet up and getting the ball rolling; it's a shame you couldn't make it!

Just got home too! I can't believe a 5 hour drive could be so relaxing after a busy weekend.

Thanks to Sandeha for arranging everything and being the tour guide, a great day out.

Great company, great locations, ok ish weather, excellent camp site, all in all a fantastic trip.

Moiz,it was a pleasure, I think you did fine on your own. I still can't condone welly wearing but would have been handy in the radio active sludge this morning. Was great to chill out chat about GAS and politics and everything in between. Highlight for me was not being dragged off for questioning for shooting a nuclear power station.

Same again soon I hope?
