Congratulate me! I'm insane!
« on: January 06, 2013, 04:55:01 PM »
Well, I did it! After dreaming about one of these babies for ages, I finally bought my Hasselblad SWC!! It's the SWC/M that  I asked about the other day; it turned out to not have fungus at all. It was only a little fogging and they cleaned it out. I said to the technician who did it, 'this is a lot of money for me. If this was you, would you buy it?' and without hesitation he exclaimed, 'YES!' And looking at prices on eBay (and elsewhere) I feel like I got a good deal as well. Of course, I will be taking it to the Hasselblad Service Center this week so they can CLA it and make sure everything is as it should be (I do that with any used equipment I buy). If it isn't, and it requires anything major, I can return it.

So I very excitedly took it out for a spin this morning. I went to the park and looked for some architecture to check out the straightness of it. Just playing to get the feel of it - getting used to using the spirit level. And being the idiot I am, and being used to mostly using SLRs, I was on frame 10 when I realized I'd had the lens cap on the whole time!! Using the SWC on the tripod I did get a bunch of stares from people, including some Japanese tourists who came right up to me to gawk at it from different angles then walk away. I thought they were all looking at my nifty new camera, but now I'm betting they were thinking, who's the idiot taking pictures with the lens cap on?!?!

Anyway, now I just wait to hear what the verdict is from the Hasselblad Service Center. Hopefully it gets a clean bill of health. Shooting with it will take a different way of thinking but I like the lightness of it and I think we are going to be very happy together.

Big thanks to Phil for all his coaching! Thanks to his advice I'd been looking for a Bessa Angle Finder as well as the camera. I already have the rights lens for it, and found the finder as well and am waiting for that to arrive.

Excellent - a happy ending, and +VE start to 2013. Fingers x'd for a good outcome from the service centre.

I'm really chuffed for you (if slightly jealous). So, will we be having some super-wide, distortion-free pics on the weekend threads? Actually, sod the weekend threads, start your own thread.  WE WANT PICS, WE WANT PICS.

LOL, I'll post pictures as soon as I get anything. BTW, I'm jealous of me too, but I've been a very good, frugal girl all last year and decided I deserved a treat :)

BTW, how do you make the emoticons with picket signs?

It was my pleasure and yes, the lens cap :-X So easy to do, much like it is with a Holga.

You'll love it, I know you will.

So nice! Leave that lens cap at home. That way you will always know where it is.

I know (from reputation) that the guys at Hasselblad can do miracles on the cameras. I wouldn't worry about it.

Fantastic - and congratulations!! If I was still in "GAS" mode, an SWC/M would be number 1 on my shopping list (no word of a lie or exaggeration).

This weekend has been a Hasselblad weekend for both of us as I sold/traded some old gear I wanted rid of as part of my anti-GAS / consolidation exercise and I was given some money for a wedding I shot - so I traded-in / upgraded my beat up 50mm and 80mm "C" lenses to minty black "CF T*" versions.

Like yourself, I can't wait to get out and use them.

I'm really looking forward to seeing your photos as a counterpoint to those that Phil posts - which are always one of the highhlights of the weekend threads.

The owner of the shop where I traded my lenses is a BIG fan of SWCs and was showing me his over the weekend. These cameras are beautiful little gems but, like all beautiful gems, they come at a price. You've just got to decide whether it's a price you're willing to pay......

My dream wide setup right now is a Rolleiflex 6008 with a 40mm lens. I'm not sure how many years I would have to save up for that, maybe a Bronica S2A or a SQ-Ai would be a saner choice ;)

Some years ago, I had a Bronica SQ-B with 40mm, 80mm and 150mm PS lenses. Fantasic set up but, to my eternal shame, I was "seduced by the dork side" and traded them to part fund purchase of a new, fangled digi-SLR  :'(

If you put a photo taken with the Bronica kit next to the same photo taken with Hasselblad/Zeiss or Rollei 6008, I doubt many could tell them apart.

I don't doubt that for a second. The meter inside the camera body is what interests me the most. I'm not a fan of those prism finders.

Ahhh right...

I've just got so used to metering manually when I have the Hasselblad out with me that I forget that some MF bodies are fitted with meters...!!

Exactly. For SLRs (WLF and 6x6) that leaves me with the Rollei, the Bronica EC-TL and a maybe a third option that I've forgotten. As far as TLRs goes, I have your Rolleiflex T :) But maybe I should just get used to a hand held meter or sunny 16 and get on with it.

me neither! I had a long look at a zenza bronica EC before jumping on a C and then a good gossen lightmeter :)

I know Jonas. Search for the EC-TL I found old posts from you asking more or less the same questions ;) I will probably end up with a cheaper setup than the Rollei. Also the S2A just looks totally amazing.

Swings and roundabouts, Urban.

A meter in a camera body is a nice option but, as you'll appreciate with the 3.5T, an accurate, working meter in an older body is an increasingly rare commodity - and it will probably fail at some point. Having a good quality, hand-held meter (maybe with a spot attachment) is a useful piece of kit and can "serve" several cameras (assuming the shutters / apertures are all calibrated correctly).

I have a Minolta Auto-Meter IVf with the spot meter attachment. It's not a true spot meter as I think it views about a 4 degree circle whereas dedicated spot meters tend to be 1 degree and very selective. Still, it's good enough for what I need.

Although there's a good meter in my Mamiya 7, I usually check the reading against the Minolta Auto-Meter - particularly if I want an incident reading as the Mamiya only offers a reflective reading - which can be fooled by things like bright patches in the frame and sun / bright sky reflecting off water. Ironically, the Mamiya 7's meter is very centre weighted.

Conversely, the "averaged" reading you get from an Olympus OM2n is (IMO) about as accurate as you can get from an SLR meter. Whether the fact that it meters directly off the film once the shutter has opened, I can't say - but the OM2n is one of the best meters I've ever used in a camera body.

I'm going to help a lot right here by asking only one question: what does sanity have to do with that?  ;)  :o  ::)
