Collaboration #29 "I Give You My Best Shot" - now online
« on: January 01, 2013, 11:38:53 PM »
Team, the final collaboration for 2012, "I Give You My Best Shot" is now online. Thanks to all of the contributors....there was a good turn out for this one. Nice!

http://www.filmwasters.com/collaborations/v/collaboration29/

With so many entries there's every chance I'll have missed one or two, so please check and if you don't see your photo in here, don't hesitate to get in touch ASAP and I'll endeavour to fix the error immediately.

Also, please note that this gallery stretches over two pages, so don't panic if you don't see you image on the first page. It is arranged (as always) alphabetically by first name.

It took about 2 hours. I usually moan when a collab doesn't get a lot of entries, but this time I was shaking my fist at all of you eager beavers for sending in so many!!!

Great to see all those images. The one from Jonas sticks out for me as it brings back memories for me as I've met my wife in a place just like this :)

And Ed, thanks for all this work. The web developer in me wonders why something like this has to take that long today and I have the urge to build something to speed up the process, but realistically I'll never find the time ;)

It's what happens when you run a creaky website held together by sticky tape and static HTML  ;) We don't use a CMS for Filmwasters, so there's no simple way to do this type of thing. If it was just images, it would take about 2 minutes, but the accompanying text is what eats up the time. We think the text is important though, so it's got to be included.

  • Images are sent to the FW mailbox with (hopefully) the correct email subject, the correct content, with an image file attached in the correct format, correctly named and of the correct size.
  • One of us logs onto the FW mailbox and sorts through all the mail to determine which ones contain the collaboration images. Usually this is simple enough, but not everyone puts the correct subject/tutle on their mail, so we have to check we've not missed anything.
  • The attached images are then saved to the local computer. Most of them need to be renamed, because the file name of the image is the thing we use to automatically populate the tite field on the gallery page for each image. I could leave them as they're sent to me, but it looks messy.
  • I create a new, empty gallery on Filmwasters.com in the very old gallery package that we use.
  • The images are then uploaded to the new gallery.
  • Next, the accompanying text is copied out of each of the emails and added to the corresponding gallery page for each person's image.
  • The text for each image is then checked for typos and corrected if required.
  • Done!

Let's just say, there is a LOT of Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V that goes on!!
 :)

Great work from Ed. Sorry Ed, I thought I had included some text with my image, but, I now realise that I didn't - must pay attention to the small print.  :(

Wow, that's a lot of entries! Lot's of good stuff in this one. Time for another collab! My New Year's resolution is to harrass Ed even sooner after the final submission day...maybe even before. No excuses!

And this has nothing to do with anything except that the word "entries" brought it to mind.  When I first heard this many many moons ago in the 80s I thought he was singing "dog entrails".

Great images, everyone. Particularly love the various Portraits.  I haven't really done any filmwasting to speak of myself this year.  Really must do something about it, and I do normally try and join in the collaborations but have failed miserably this year.

When I first looked through this gallery, I skipped the narrative Scott provided on his picture but it is certainly worth the read.  Would love to learn more about the multiple exposure technique used in this image.

Perhaps we should each provide our own narrative for Phil image?

Mike

Damn, Sean - it's been a while since I heard that one!

Mike, I rarely have much to say, so, please do! Something from each would = a lot of narrative. All that cutting and pasting could create problems if Ed has just one extra vodka  ??? :o

Fantastic work by everyone. Thanks, Ed! And thanks for your kind words, Emma!

Interesting to read how many people picked their best shot based on how it made them feel rather than their technically best shot. Maybe the New Year's nostalgia?

Filmwasters don't know anything about nostalgia, do they? ;)

I don't think by any stretch of imagination I would have come to the conclusion that this was a toilet block!

The black stacks/columns remind me of liquorice sticks. Sherbert Fountains anyone?

I'm stunned. Some of the very best I've seen, individually or collectively, for a long time. Hardly any point trying to single any out but the ones that stand out for me are Ann M's shot of those swimmers at dusk - which is phenomenal. Ed's kid playing on the beach is sublime. Lalo's portrait is perfection. Nigel's portrait takes some beating as does Photo-Utopia's. Urban's photo of his beautiful baby is also a wonder.

This could produce a "year book" for 2012 all on its own. Well done, everyone, it's humbling to be amongst you.

I think that would be more of Skinny Puppy's style!

Somehow, I just miss a lot of the stuff from that decade.

Ed,

Sincere and humble thanks for including my submission and all of my diatribe verbatim with the very excellent work in this Colalb, Its all simply stunning! :o
I promise to be more succinct and brief next time, feel a bit like the babbler of the group actually after reading everyone else's submissions. :-[ Apologies for the massive Cut Paste effort.

Best,

Scott.
Time is a false perception of the quickening eternity that we can only briefly glimpse through a temporary capture one frame at a time, where each frame in our momentum is an enigmatic mirror of ourselves and all who choose to look and truely see.

Scott, I thought it was worth including, so it's no trouble at all....after all, you obviously took a lot of time over the words. Blab away in future; who knows, you may have started something  ;D
