Collaboration Gallery Now Online: Kitsch is Beautiful
« on: November 14, 2012, 11:18:27 PM »
Thanks to everyone who submitted to their inner Kitsch Itch and sent in a photo. Only 9 entries this time, which is disappointing given the huge scope offered by the theme, but definitely no lack of quality and the added bonus of Big Paul going on a massive rant about Christmas  ;)

Oh and Jonas, I updated the homepage too!   :-*

I had a lot of fun taking my photo - not least because it was the first time I'd used my LF rig for the best part of a year and because I finally got to try out my single pack of Polapan 553 peel apart pack film...all in a good cause. It took me about 90 minutes to take a grand total of 4 photos. I had this idea to pose my ceramic cats behind a book called 'Classic Plastics' (a resolutely kitsch subject for a book and with the added bonus of a nod towards toy cameras)....great plan, right? I got a decent shot after a LOT of posing and lighting challenges and - just as I was going to pack everything up - I decided to try a final shot without the book just for the hell of it. Life being what it is, the final shot is obviously the one I ended up using, but I can't quite let go of the original concept and so here is 'the shot that should have been' in all its glory...

Great work from all. I think I found Jonas's rabbit the kitchiest, Piet's boat the nicest and Paul's comments the scroogiest ( I could hear the north west lilt resonating as I read it).

That rabbit looks plain crazy, but I think Francois' poodles probably take the biscuit (see what I did there) for pure kitsch....although Sean's dog and horse aren't far behind.

Nice shots all! Ed, I really liked the symmetry in your diptych and play with the black and white border. I proclaim carlos to be the winner of putting up the cleanest shot ;) and I think becky, the camera really suited the subject!
but what really got me smiling what francois wrote to his shot ;D

oh, and that rabbit was something I stumbled over while in cologne. a big antique shop there had all kinds of wacky stuff lined up by the windows  :D
edit: frontpage???  :o I'm honoured :´)

Great selection of photos. Hard to pick any favourites but two really caught my eye:

- Becky's multi-coloured frogs. (I love frogs, real or otherwise)
- Jonas's rabbit - which reminds me of a picture I used to have in my bedroom when I was a child.

Rant? I meant (mean) every word.

Great shots everyone. Yet again I couldn't find the time ...

And Paul I stopped giving presents a few years ago. But with a two year old, I think I might start again. And baking Christmas cookies is fun, too. So I guess everything about Christmas that's not related to religion and commercialism I'm OK with ;)

Hi Urban.

I love giving and receiving presents and I'm all in favour of goodwill to all men (and even women  ;) ) - but just for the love of doing it. I'd hate to be thought of as a grouch!!

Now, a big thanks to Ed for putting this one up once again!

Now, those cats are pure Ed Wenn...
A hare with women's legs ???
A ghetto blaster with a built-in TV ???
Frogs in the desert ???

These are all so bad in a good way... it makes you feel a bit guilty about liking them.

Now, very few people know this but Paul actually turns into the incredible Hulk as Xmas closes in ;)

I'd half expected to find a 'Green Lady' in the collection, but the ceramic poodle really scores high.  Not to mention the Bush radio (!!!)

A truly great selection.

gutted I missed this one, been needing an excuse to shoot for a while. been so busy with music and work I haven't had much time for photography for the past few months. other than my brothers wedding and stag last month I haven't shot film for AGES! oh well, have my sisters wedding next month and have just come up with a plan for a photoshoot so will hopefully have some more stuff coming soon.

Great efforts everybody, they are really fantastic and its very interesting to see how different people interpreted the theme, don't usual like to pick favourites as all forms of art are valid in the eyes of the creator, but Jonas, your shot really did stand out for me. very cool and surreal and deserves its spot on the home page.

WELL DONE EVERYONE!

It's kinda funny. This house happens to be somewhat famous in the design community. Even teachers I had knew about this house and were citing it as an example  ;D

And I was the only one in the students who had actually seen it.

Too bad these concrete sculptures are slowly disappearing. We rarely see concrete deer eating on lawns and little concrete black fishermen trying to catch fish on pristine turfs... Car tires used as planters and painted white are also all gone as far as I know...

Francois...not gone in the Southern part of the US.  I'm just back from the F1 race in Austin and I can tell you concrete deer on lawns are still very much in "vogue"  ;)  So are car tire swings and planters...
