Using Tumblr as a Photo Gallery/ Portfolio site
« on: May 28, 2012, 11:35:03 AM »
Given that everything is more expensive these days ... in the UK at least, I need to make some savings.  My £50 per year web hosting is in the first of several culls.

As an alternative, I've used a free tumblr portfolio theme which, with a few minor html tweaks, does the job nicely!  And it's all free. Even better. It took 40 mins to set up.  My old site used to take me literally weeks to design and upload.

http://leontaylorphotography.tumblr.com

As soon as my hosting firm allows me, I'll be redirecting my own url so it is slightly less clumsy.

Are there any other free photog portfolio site options?

Your site looks lovely.  Unfortunately, when I click on the images to see the lightbox, nothing happens.

For a free service it is very impressive.

very impressive leon, I may be following you to tumblr for my portfolio (I already have my blog there but didn't realise there were themes as good as that for portfolios). I have recently been building a website for the family business with wordpress on a free 000webhost server. the install of wordpress on the server takes atleast half an hour (which doesn't sound much but its very frustrating) and then you can spend hours if not days looking for good themes and stripping them down to what you want. but it is next to free (we are just paying for our domain name on fasthost about £6 a year) check it out if you like... as I said I'm having some issues which my web developing friend is trying to find the time to sort out for me. on the first page click the wordpress link (thats problem 1, and the slider on the first page of the actual site doesn't work)

www.stonewoodworks.co.uk

incidentally the 1 picture under the kitchens section was my first ever photography assignment on film :-) and its crap :-P

Actually, I discovered that the working address is
http://stonewoodworks.co.uk/wordpress/

One way to fix this is to put a file called index.html in the root of the directory.
The file should contain the following
Quote
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<title>Your Page Title</title>
<meta http-equiv="REFRESH" content="0;url=http://stonewoodworks.co.uk/wordpress/"></HEAD>
<BODY>
Redirecting to website.
</BODY>
</HTML>

That's pretty sure to make the whole thing work :)

Leon works fine on iPad.

Also I've been looking at www.weebly.com and www.wix.com to use as a portfolio site, but decided to stick with Tumblr.

But I like what you've done, got me thinking about doing something for the business, so thanks.

I had a look at wix, but I think you have to pay a hosting fee? I couldn't quite get to the bottom of it.  Didn't know about weebly.

Thanks Matt

Lovely website Leon, the page works perfectly and it opens really fast on my Mac.

I quite like Tumblr and I've been using for sometime already but it's for both film and digital.

When you say you'll be able to redirect your own url do you mean getting rid of the "tumblr.com" after your name? This is something I would consider doing next year when my hosting subscription will finish. Don't know yet how expensive servers in Brazil are...

Same here with a very tweaked version of XP and a very tweaked version of Firefox...
If you want, I can also check it under Ubuntu.

thanks everyone. Glad it works on some early OSs also.  Francois, yes please re the Ubuntu.

Mauricio.  You can buy any available domain, then direct it to a site of your choice.  The url of the blog will remain the same, but people can access it using the purchased domain address.

Just checked it out with my netbook running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Firefox 12.
Apart from the smallish screen of the computer which forces me to scroll around more than I like, the site works flawlessly. Colors are good and the code is fine.

So, it gets a passing grade from me :)
