Rolleiflex ƒ3.5 Double/Multiple Exposures?
« on: May 15, 2012, 09:07:17 AM »
Hi all, been a while since I've been on here.

I've taken loan of a lovely little Rolleiflex ƒ3.5 (model T maybe?). I'm wondering if any of you know if it's possible to make double/multiple exposures with this camera?

I did a web search and saw some stuff about moving crank plates in the opposite direction and so on, but that doesn't seem like it's going to work on this model. Some people were writing about an arrow, but there's no arrow on this crank.

I'm not entirely sure but I reckon it would envolve some tricks on the camera's mechanism since they were built on super high standars, which means that you would have to open these beauty and perform a DIY  :o

I have loads of German cameras and even the cheap plastic ones like Beirette an Isoly models you always have the double exposure prevention.

Have a look at the Rollei Club http://www.rolleiclub.com/cameras/tlr/info/all_TLR.shtml  be aware that your enquire for some people might be the equivalent of asking the Pope about pre-conception advice  ;D

Somehow, I doubt the Rolleiflex would allow multiple exposures. Don't forget that this feature was long considered a major flaw by camera makers. In the Rollei line, I can think of only the Rolleicord as a possible candidate for multi exposures. But that's obviously not an option...

The earliest models, (with no linkage between the winder and the shutter) and the later ones that have a disc under the winder, can do it.  The others not.  Just have to get yourself a second Rolleiflex.  ;)

I use a rolleiflex 2.8c and it's possible to do multiple exposures by pressing a little switch on the crank. That allows you to cock the shutter again by moving the crank without advancing the film.

Thanks all for the replies. Interesting reading. :) I'd say the Pope has more pressing matters these days, and a second Rolleiflex? Oh my!! Wouldn't I just love to!

I used a little Lubitel 2 camera for the doubles.

Double exposures are possible with the 'F' models for sure, here is what the manual says.

Double exposures at will

For intentional multiple or trick exposures the double exposure prevention mechanism can be switched off (only will a roll of film in camera) After exposure move the release ring at base of crank in the direction of the arrow and then turn the crank one complete backward revolution until it stops. This cocks the shutter without advancing the film. This can be repeated for multiple exposures.

There's more to this photography thing than meets the eye.
