) what we are doing and what this is about. As You may see its sponsor by fuji and I am thinking they just want to get new market rich hipsters with money. I am afraid that if films will be cost more and more only they will afford to buy them

Wow, I couldn't get through the first 3 minutes either. It's like watching and MTV realiuty show or something, completely unbearable.

It anyone is strong enough to watch the whole thing, I'm curious if theres anything good in the middle of it.

Though I'm an increasingly middle-aged man of increasing girth, I intermittently get accused of being a hipster by my friends just because of my film affliction. But I'm instantly outed as a simple film geek (in every sense) as soon as any true hipster (or photographer) comes within five yards.

I have been known to eat the odd vegetarian sandwich and fondle Moleskine, though. Maybe I'm a hipster in a fat guy suit.

I watched it out of boredom... after over 40 minutes, I was even more bored! And I keep asking me the same questions over and over... like does everyone in Utah live in McMansions? Why must they have such poor taste in decoration? How the heck did their teacher friend get a position, he's not nearly old enough to do so? A garage not filled with stuff... something seriously wrong there? What's up with the confession booth?

Here's a resume of it all:
Begining: self promotion and explanation of the series.
Middle: ooh! and aah! over vintage daguerrotypes and tintypes.
End: ooh and aah over their own portrait on wet plate colloidon done on black trophy aluminum.

That's pretty much it. They also keep saying how much they love film all along.

Only thing to add is a sprinkling of unconvincing platitudes about self actualisation through film.

This is not to say that we are ungrateful for you posting Damian! It's just fun to poke holes in stuff like this. I'd prefer to watch this than some webinar on photoshop etc.

So, I finally watched it all the way through and here's what I took away:

Very nice production quality
Everyone's excitement over the tintypes was infectious
Smart idea using the Pyrex dishes as developing trays
There's not enough film-oriented television, so I'm going to keep watching

I was expecting this to be a lot worse than it turned out to be! Skip the first 3-4 mins and the last few minutes, and (group hugs aside) it was quite watchable - no worse than a lot of youtube photography posts. Not a patch on the filmwasters videos of course!

I've actually seen the two women in the show before on some other I-love-film video, but I can't quite place where it was. They were making a living shooting weddings with colour film using Mamiya 645s.

Ok, do not tell anybody but I liked the video, wait! I actually enjoyed it!! The video was well done and some of the shots were more than just OK, might not be my style but liked them. The three presenters are pretty annoying, especially Tanya who instigates all of the sickening group hugging.
I suppose it should not be a surprise that everything is "ossum", but it too gets on the nerves.

The history guy in episode one nicely explained the potted history of the medium, though his explanation of 35mm was a bit mangled.

The production is pretty good though, and it's not everyday something like this is available to watch. Their enthusiasm is never in doubt, though it seems a bit forced at times.

For those of you who watched the first couple of minutes, isn't that what the slider at the bottom of the screen is for? Just move it along to the more informative bits.

Overall it's worth a look, but not rocket science.

I didn't watch episode 1 and got to 07:08 on the timer (episode 2) and had to turn it off. It's probably informative to some extent, the production values are good but the presenters are all so "up themselves" I couldn't face any more without the distraction of stabbing myself in the face with a fork.

I think it has to be something related to being a young commercial photographer...
Thinking about it, they remind me of my cousin. She got a bachelor's in photography and does commercial work. The few times I met her, I was really stunned by her slightly megalomaniac personality. But that being said, she still is a very nice person.

Francois, I'm sure all the people on the video are, genuinely, very nice indeed. However, at my age, I prefer instructional videos / programes to be dour affairs involving people with beards (even the women) and tweed jackets with leather elbow patches. A bit like 1970s BBC2 "Open University" programmes.

I concur. preferably also smoking a pipe and wearing an expression on their face that mixes deep rooted unhappiness, contempt for their audience and anger at the director who's clearly (in the presenter's eyes) a complete buffoon.

Seriously though. What's wrong with abit of gravitas? If I wanted hare brained antics I'd watch EU leaders trying to rescue the Euro, or the Leveson Inquiry.

Just watched episode 1 as I can't sleep it's 03:15, really annoying trio but then I do find most
people annoying. While looking at it I spent most of the time uttering obscenities at it.

Just bringing an old thread back to life to let you know that I've just watched Episode 8 of the series and was pretty impressed. They visited a pro lab (which is also their sponsor) and showed all the steps required to make a print. From the Dip & Dunk machines to the scanning, darkroom printing and so on. Only one group hug at the end so you're safe for over 90% of the show

I never thought a pro lab would do so much to get your prints out... something which my local labs don't even remotely do!

I agree with you Abdul, while the presenters are extremely annoying, their enthusiasm is not in question. There are too many here who throw the baby out with the bath water. I wonder what they are doing instead with the little time they are not watching this series.

I'm not sure that what we are seeing here is flamboyance though. Just ridiculousness. But, as you say, their enthusiasm cant be questioned.

Fox, your Tiabert Plant comment is genius. I cant see her without hearing her screaching through the Immigrant Song now ...

I have to say, on the desert shoot episode, they make some very strong pictures. Not sure that can be said for the show where they had to all take pictures of the tree, they were mostly poor.

Was the Desert shoot sponsored by Avon or something? It seemed that everyone person either on or off screen had to be caked in make-up. There must be some interesting back stories going on here.

Either way, the Utubes are probably richer for having this show in them. It's certainly given us lots to say

I must admit that the makeup thing is something people who don't work in the modeling/advertisement world don't know about.
Back in university, there was a girl who was paying for her studies by doing professional modeling and photo shoots. She often (especially during exam time) would come to class with very heavy makeup on. Now this was before the days of Digital capture (1996 or 1997). For publications, they needed people with very smooth skin to minimize photoshop work which was dreadfully expensive. So, heavy makeup it was. Same thing for guys. And the trend keeps on going with everything now being shot in high resolution.

Yes.

Is it lacking in film info?
Yes.

Regardless, I find it mildly entertaining. If you can ignore the cheese, its not all that bad, though I do wish they would talk more about film photography rather than just only shooting film.

I thought the desert shoot episode was excellent! I particularly loved the images they produced and I really liked getting the glimpse into Tanja's creative process of using story boards over a period of time to get the image strongly in her head before transferring it to film. I like the tour of RPL too. It was interesting seeing what their hybrid workflow is like.

That's just me and my 2 cents. I generally will be happy with anything or anyone that supports film.

These films really have that marmite factor, and whilst I love marmite I can't say the same about the three presenters. Call me an old fashioned, miserable, stick in the mud old git but I like it when people speak in plain English without behaving like they've just inhaled 20 litres of nitrous oxide.
