Photografica 2012: Sunday 20th May, London
« on: May 04, 2012, 03:17:05 PM »
Starting a new pinned thread to track all Photografica 2012 biz between now and the 20th.

For those who still don't know what Photografica is, take a look at the website: http://www.nanites.co.uk/pccgb/Photographica%2001.htm and then go look at last year's podcast.

First off, I've booked the upstairs gallery at The Jugged Hare for us from 1PM. If anyone is going to Photografica and doesn't know any other FWers, but you want to meet up, get yourself to the Jugged Hare for 1-ish and come and say hello.

Secondly, I've sold my knackered old Graflex RB 5x4 SLR to DS and he's going to be picking it up from me at the pub. I'll be showing him how the shutter thingy works (assuming I can remember!). I'll bring some instant film with me and if someone gets hold of a compatible lens and lens board, we can shoot some portraits. The light will be low so we'll have to do it old school style, where the subject can't move for 5 minutes  :D

Pub's Website: http://www.fullers.co.uk/rte.asp?id=243&itemid=154&task=View

Thanks for organising the "Jugged Hare", Ed. Lara and I have Photographica firmly in our diaries.

Incidentally, are we still intending to do the challenge suggested in the previous thread - i.e. arrive with no camera, buy "something" and post the shots we take on a "thread of the day"? If so, I'm up for it. If not, let's decide soon.

Cheers. Paul.

I suggested it and was still going to do it (but bring the new digi toy with me just in case). But up to individuals I guess.

I could join in, but it would have to be on instant film of some sort....I have a fridge full of exposed and undeveloped film from 2011, so it'll have to be instant. We'll see.

Great idea if you can pull it off though.

I'm looking forward to it. I can bring a lens or two for the graflex- but have no idea what size of board it needs. Shall I bring some black masking tape and some foamcore as a contingency?

I'm going!

Dunno if i should publicly say this but I have access to a laser cutter if anyone wants some simple lens boards made. Can do up to 3mm MDF/ply or 10mm perspex (dunno if black perspex is a good idea) just need dimensions if you wanna PM me on here. Will price it up but it shouldn't be too pricey.

Thom!! That would be a major bummer. Fingers crossed you get some last minute sales.

DS: As luck would have it I sold the lens previously on the camera to Lucy Telford so you could PM her via the forum message system and kindly ask if she'll measure it up for you.

Thom, have you tried this http://marketplace.theprintspace.co.uk/

They have launched kind of recently, I have not used so I cannot say whether good or bad, but it might work for you? I think they take no commission.

Look forward to seeing all attending tomorrow.

Hi Ordinal, you'll be more than welcome! If you don't know any other FWs make sure you have the details of the pub booked for a lunch meetup at 1pm (the top of this post). See you there!

Thom: That's a great shame, dude. It would have been good to have a proper catch up, but definitely some other time.

Suzi: Have fun sorting out your stuff and I hope your trip to China is fantastic.

Ordinal: The more the merrier. Hope to meet you tomorrow at some point.

DS: I have your camera packed and ready. The shutter still works (long sigh of relief from the seller!!) and I'll try and remember to bring some instant film and a film back!!

Well, we seem to have survived another year...and I think we all enjoyed our socks off?! I know I had a great time (despite Miller getting in before me for the second year running w/ regard to a nice little bundle of cheap 100 series instant film)  :D :D

We failed to get a photo out of Miller's portrait cam and DS's new Graflex....or even out of Mauricio's wonderful new Speed Graphic....but I think in all cases the fault can be traced back to my pack of dodgy Polacolor 125i. Sorry about that.

I took a few with my phone which I'll include here later. There were 15 of us I think - which is a great turn out. A good few bargains were snapped up. We had a very interesting chat with Alex from Mr Cad about instant peel apart film, TIP and Kodak. The smell in the hall was acceptable, but the usual crush was very much evident although this year I gave as good as I got due to having a Graflex RB in my rucksack  :D

The pub was fun too. Really fun. No veggie bangers and mash this time round which was a personal tragedy...but I drowned my sorrows in a couple of pints of Honeydew.

Yep, it was a good day.

Good food and friends is definitely what makes a great day... too bad plane tickets are so f***** expensive.

Happy to see you gave the Titanic a good home :) (It's pretty much what I've come to call this RB)

An Argus brick!
Woo-hoo!

I have one I've never used...
It's very reliable and robust, just as it feels. It was even at one point called the "American Leica"...
I read that the lens gives a nice swirling bokeh...

What a great day out we had!!... really nice to be able to see everyone and enjoy a nice pint together.

I'm already sad that I'll probably miss next year's event so... I thought I'd buy a small souvenir to remember the ocasion very well... like a nice leaving UK gift for myself ;D

I totally blew my budget! not money left even to buy a single roll of film...

Just checked the forecast and tomorrow (my day off) will be 23 degrees with the sun shinning in London... luckily I still have some film left...

Boy, I guess I'll take the toy out for a ride ;)

that's beautiful and ideally what I'd have liked to get myself but unfortunately had to defect at the last minute (family commitments kind of things), another year then. Glad to see it was a great day again. Are we going to see another podcast soon about it?

It seems your viewfinder has a different viewing mask though... I don't know if it also has the proper focusing cam? Mine doesn't...

Great Francois! didn't know you had one... from now on I'll annoy you asking you for your tips and tricks ;D

The mask on the viewfider is when using the roll film back. The rangefinder is not working and the person who sold me said it's not an easy task to fix. I'm thinking about getting rid of the whole thing...

Tis indeed. I'm a punk cunningly disguised as a hippy.

Worked out how to set the tension spring on the Graflex RB- it's like loading a medieval siege weapon. I love this camera already- but I really, really should've bought those darkslides. Serves me right for haggling obnoxiously and not knowing the worth of things.

Apart from the balista Graflex I got:
  • 20 rolls of Fomapan in 120

I'm smiling all round. DS's 'balista' comment and the ouija pinhole had me in stitches.

Terry: I was on the Honeydew because you work up quite a thirst after a few hours in that big hall and I needed something cool.

Salvo: No podcast this time I'm afraid. Leon (mainly) with Francois and I have almost put together the next one, but it's taking ages to finish....and even then most of the footage is from December 2011!! Editing these bl**dy things takes forever.

Lara and I had a thoroughly good time meeting you all again. I managed to straight trade an M4-P body for a Hassy 500c + 50mm Distagon + A12 back in really nice nick. I also bagged a 5 pack of out of date Ilford FP4 220 film and a dinky little Sekonic L-206 view (light) meter.

Big thanks to Ed for sorting the room at the Jugged Hare - it was very tempting to stay there and quaff all but retail therapy called.....

DS and Sapata excelled themselves with their acquisitions. The muff on DS's new tool has to be seen to be believed.....

I like the first of these a lot and can't quite believe how bad the second one is. But here they are. The first has Mauricio, Ken & Nigel being blurry in the pub. The second has the stragglers leaving the pub (Paul & Lara, Miles, Miller and maybe some others had already left).

Totally pissed that I didn't make it, again! Only arrived back in the UK Friday evening - I had thought I would be cool with driving back to London, but, I wasn't! Dare I say, next year?

Some great things bagged.

The rangefinder is not working and the person who sold me said it's not an easy task to fix. I'm thinking about getting rid of the whole thing...
The rangefinder on these things is rather primitive. The only problem is where the mechanics are located. If I didn't know these were made in the 1950's, I'd swear it was designed and assembled by robots (Just like my dad's Chrysler where you need to remove the front wheel and fender to change the battery).

The finder probably works. If you take a flashlight, open the front and look under the top, you'll see a thin black box with a small slot cut out of the edge. Open it with your fingernail (hinges from the back and is spring loaded) and you'll see a piston and a small metal triangle (only a thin strip of shiny metal shows). Pull out the sliver of metal. That's the focusing cam. On it will be printed the focal length of the lens for which is was made. If it's not matched with the lens, you'll think the rangefinder is dead...

If I want to make mine work, I'll have to cut a new one out of a piece of aluminum. Good thing you can use the old one as a template to start with!
