... Wednesday Group Hug? ...
« on: April 04, 2012, 03:40:48 PM »
I've finally paid for my new camera, and while waiting for the long 5 weeks before its arrival, I'm scanning the world wide inter web to read about it ... just to sate my thirst so to speak.

[get to the point Leon]

Well, as I've toured p.nut, aphoog.org and larformtog.info I've seen that each and every thread tumbles to trolling, arguments, flamewars and all-out hand-bag/ purse hurling.  It is quite something to behold, just 2 or 3 posts in and it's fish-slapping time.  Amazing. Over the most ridiculous and idiotic minutiae.

It just made me realise what a nice bunch we all are.

group hug.

There are certainly places out there that I would only ever lurk. I can't be doing with confrontational, aggressive and opinionated. It's meant to be enjoyable,  right ;D

Have they told you if it's a boy or a girl yet Leon? or do you want it to be a surprise?... FWIW mines a girl as it can multitask  ;) 8)

Totally right.
What's the point in fighting over whether Schneider or Roddenstock lenses can show 2 more lines per millimeter? We don't care! We don't shoot test targets, we photograph the real world!

Group hug really well deserved :)

Ive been using online forums for quite some time and though its not strictly with photography ive seen quite some debauchery in my time. Its great that there are still civil parts of the interwebs

Gold stars and ice lollies all round for good behavious folks  :)

Like Leon, whenever I spend more than a minute or two checking out other forums it's amazing how little mutual respect or even tolerance there is out there. We are, indeed, a shining example to all......

yes it seems people find it enjoyable and easy to be agressive,
confrontational and feckin' ar8es in the comfort of their own home
without having to deal with a "real life" discussion or confrontation!

what camera did you get leon?

yes, warm chocolate chip cookies all around!

This is the only film/photography forum I visit.

The other forums I randomly go to are astronomy ones, and they are nice just like you all.
No one has a bigger/better scope....well they do, but everyone shares their bliss so it's all good.

yeah whats the point in having a spirit level if your not going to use it! gawd leon.........

in all seriousness. this forum is the daddy of all photography forums for me. All film, all friendly and no over opinionated grammar nazi types who just want to throw their weight around to establish the size of their extension tubes.

I think its all in the name. Scares off people without a sense of humour or with too many pixels in their pants.

I'm also of the opinion that it all depends as to who is running the ship. When you have a grumpy captain you invariably have a grumpy crew.

I liken FW to a holiday camp (to all the UK peeps think 'Hi de hi') and we're all either redcoats (Leon, Ed et al) or happy campers!

I'm new here. My wife said when I found the site, "Oh, you should join dear, your really are good at wasting film".
Snarky little lady but I still love her.

In regard to other sites, well I post a bit on Pnet and RFF and there are only a few combative, opinionated, know-it-all's who try dominate the discussion. Of course it only takes two of those to ruin a thread. But there are a lot of helpful and reasonable ones too, who keep the rhetoric toned down.

Have had not much chance to comment here, but yes, this seems to be an exceptionally well mannered crowd.

The discussion about and samples from the Harman Titan 5X4 pinhole camera has been particularly interesting and has moved me to dig up that old homebuilt 5X4 view camera I bought 2 years ago.

just thought I would ressurect this thread for a begining of the week group hug.

Just joined the Matchless/AJS owners club forum as me and my dad are doing up his old 1959 AJS G2 britbike (film photography coming soon)

went over there to ask some advice, and tell them all about what I want to do with the bike (quite radical changes to a "classic" of sorts I suppose) and most of them are complete arseholes!

read the thread if you like.

http://www.ajs-matchless.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10440&FORUM_ID=59&CAT_ID=6&Forum_Title=G2+%2F+Model+14&Topic_Title=introduction%2F+sacrilege+G2+conversion.&whichpage=1&tmp=1#pid82070

anyway big film photography love to you all!

I know right!

pretty gutted from the whole experience. was looking forward to making some new friends and learning about the bike. up until now I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with fellow bikers.

guna stick to filmwasters I think, its always been my one and only. nothing but good vibes over here.

With friends like that, who needs enemas? What a shower!! They clearly threw the wrong bits of them away at birth.

Collectively and individually they destroy the good name of a glorious old British brand. If that's typical of the standard of conversation on that board, I'd just leave and never return.

have done, not going back. couldn't believe it. I'd rather be a Biker than a "Motorcyclist" as one of them put it. all the bikers I've met have been nothing but encouraging and nice, these "motorcyclist" seem to be complete and utter -EXPLETIVE DELETED-

just wish I could have my own forum with the handful of people that were actually helpful

Bet they're all called TIM... Testosterone Infused Motorcyclists!

To add to the original theme of this thread, my 18 year old son came with me to Photographica and had the pleasure of meeting the FW contingent in the Jugged Hair and commented afterwards that he thought we were a really friendly bunch (incidentally how many pints of London Pride did you buy him Paul!?) and that we were the coolest bunch of middle aged people he's ever met... didn't know wether to take that as a compliment or an insult...?

Will post an image of the Super 8 cine camera he bought in the Photographica thread... you'll like it!

woooowww, what a bunch  :o, it was just surrealistic, surprisingly one of them (clearly a traitor) tried to infuse some rationality in the group (which, clearly again, seems a total waste of time). Thom, you were soooo patient  :-\
