It's (kind of) the weekend: 10th-12th February
« on: February 09, 2012, 10:59:04 AM »
OK, so I know it's only Thursday, but I have so much other stuff going on from today that I thought I'd use my last free 5 minutes to get in there early and start the weekend thread off....if nothing else, it'll make a change from me waiting until Monday to add a dodgy Polaroid of my kids. Instead, here's a dodgy Polaroid of my wife....wait, I didn't mean it like that  :D ;D

Erm, I'll get my coat.

This was taken back in October 2011 when Jacqui and I escaped for a long weekend in Mallorca for her birthday (courtesy of my parents who very kindly looked after the kids). I took the Land Camera 360 and 2 or 3 packs of expired 100 series Pola film of types with which I'd never used before. I can't remember what this film was, but I do remember that if you didn't peel it almost immediately you ended up with black goop (in a bad way) all over the place and a very high contrast print print which you could scratch the image off of once it was dry. The whole pack was a waste, but I found this one print today in a pile on my desk and decided to scan it before it got even more scratched. In its present state it's just the right side of 'charmingly distressed', but it won't stay like that for long.

I'm glad Adorama offered me jack in trade for my Ricoh GR1 on my new camera that shall not be named.  They offered me only $70 for it so I decided to keep it.  And though I haven't been that happy with it, why I got it has a lot to do with the fact that Moriyama uses it and I love Moriyama, but I also need to understand the kind of stuff he shoots with it, which is pretty much night or low light interiors.  The Ricoh doesn't do bright and sunny very well, and for that matter neither do I so maybe that was the problem.  Anyway, I'm keeping it as my night B&W street shooter.  Fits nicely in my little bag next to my new camera (my color street shooter).

- Ed. Beautiful shot of a very happy looking wifey and a place I want to visit one day.
- Peter. Love the shots - espcially the last one. Great period feel to them. What film do you use for the night shots? I'm keen to put my GR1s to the test a bit more (I used it in the rain and shine in Sri Lanka last December) but I'd like to see what I can do with it as a daily p&s carry-round. $70...??? I paid £25 for a lenshood for mine.......!!

Hi Ed, great first shot! I have had this trouble in the past (late peeling, black goop all over). I found out that if you rinse the polaroid you can carefully remove the black goop; gently, as the coating (I think it is) gets soft. After that you let it dry and like new!  ;D

@LD

Thanks.  I use Tri-X pushed 1.5 stops, setting the exposure compensation dial to -1.5.  Then I develop in Tmax developer 8 minutes @ 20C.  It's become my standard B&W set-up, with my Mamiya as well.  Contrasty yet good shadow detail and blown highlights -- my favorite things!

Hi Carlos, thanks for the tip. I did actually try what you suggest at the time by pouring water from a bottle over the goop and it definitely worked to some extent, but we were miles from our hotel room and I had limited water at my disposal so I had to ditch a lot of the prints. In addition to the goop though, the photos were SUPER contrasty with none of those lovely greys that I'm used to getting from Polapan films....I wondered at the time whether the evil black goop also included one of the development layers or something (I know, I'm using the wrong language here, but I'm not a chemist). The final print is not coated/protected in any way and you can scratch the image off very easily even when it's dry.

Such good stuff already.  Love the aged look of Ed's polaroid, Lawrie the delicacy of the leaves is just perfect, and Windy's bus and cottages are wonderfully evocative.

Ed, I think I was able to remove goop from 3000b and 100b, fuji...

Windy, that Bus fantastic!

Becky, that is looking good! Are those stars on the door?

Nick, wonderful stuff, really like the first one... and third one

I do not still have scanner, so quality is far away from originals, still I can post  :'(  first one is a Pola 108 expired 2000, with no direct light. I asked the waiter to be allowed to be taken a shot. I moved him to a white spot and used it as background. Then he photographed us with his phone.. well, little Alma resisted.  The second one with the Rollei. Gentlemen observing Nubian fighters.

I don't know if this would work but I know Krylon makes a spray fix for graphic arts. It's used when you do dry pastels and don't want them to rub off too easily.

Also, in ye ole days, it used to be common practice to varnish prints. Maybe using a spray varnish would be good. Arts supply stores to the rescue again. Besides, depending on the type of varnish you choose, some of them will turn yellow with time, something that might very well add that little extra to the image :)

I had my Ikoflex with me this morning when I went to visit my doctor.  Some nice morning sun falling on the porch of my neighbor's house caught my eye, and as I found myself alone in the doctor's waiting room I shot that too.

Echo that  - amazing. My GP's WR is in a temporary flat-roofed single skin brick building that smells of mouldy dishcloths. This looks like something from the old Empire - what?

Doesn't look like any doctor's waiting room I've ever been to. Distinct lack of disease-ridden 10 year old copies of "Country Life" and "Reader's Digest", no-one about to expire and no hoard of uncontrolled and uncontrollable snot-nosed little darlings hurling toys around the place. People might actually start to feel well again if they visited a place such as that in the photo.....!! It would never catch on over here.... ;D

It is a very cool doctor office.  It's a rambling old house with mismatched floors and lots of narrow old stairs.  I'd happily live there if they ever packed up and sold it.  The old magazines are there though--in yet another wicker basket (out of shot).  Personally, I think they overdid the wicker just a bit.

Where to start!!
Becky, now I have to have stars on my new "old" door I am restoring..
Windy, those colors are absolultely wonderful!
Terry, Love the Dr.'s office, also think they did a bit too much wicker, but your neighbors door way looks magical!
Peter, that third image of the "cafe", very nice!
Ed, like the "old timie" feel, very cool!
Suzi!...yep, Britt's room did have the best view, and this is a great shot!!
Charles, so restful and relaxing to view your images..
Mine today from a pinhole camera I am making for a friend,  :), this being the first off the roll and the light leaks from opening the back after rolling on the film!!

More explorations with f'd up color.

Ektachrome cross-processed, overexposed scan.  While cleaning it up I decided I like the close crop.  This is a 67% crop (BTW, what do those percentages mean, like 100% crops in camera reviews?)

Ektachrome cross-processed negative (scanned as a positive).  Checking them out on the lightbox at the lab, decided I like this look.

Ektachrome cross-processed regular scan.  Subdued tones when subject is in shade.  Trademark greenish cast.

Fuji 400 H.  Straight negative scan. Bought another 5-pack of this for cloudy weather but so far not a big fan.

The X-pro really works well here.

I saw something years ago in Leica magazine that might very well be right up your alley: the photographer was shooting color neg film which he x-pro in E6 chemistry. You end up with a slide with an orange mask... and very warm and subdued colors.

i've tried "reverse xpro" a few times...c41 in e6, and it doesn't come out nearly as nice as the other way around. both times the film was very monochromatic towards one tone and low contrast. like very very blue with red highlights, if i remember correctly.

i've tried "reverse xpro" a few times...c41 in e6, and it doesn't come out nearly as nice as the other way around. both times the film was very monochromatic towards one tone and low contrast. like very very blue with red highlights, if i remember correctly.
Contrast will be lower since negative films are inherently low contrast. But considering that Peter often shoots high contrast scenes, it might very well be the ticket. There's also two choices for scanning. Either you scan it like a negative which will give you a very blue image with a negative picture, or you scan it like a slide which will give you an orangy image with very soft tones and strange blues and greens.

Film is the vinyl record of photography.

Peter, your first three are some of the best images I've seen for quite a while, really love them!
First and third for me, specially third one. I think everything just smoothly gets together.
