Dave Anderson article in NY Times - worth the read
« on: March 05, 2007, 04:02:52 AM »
There's a great article on my pal Dave Anderson in the NY Times today.
Food for thought for any of you considering a docu project...
I was not aware that folks in Vidor were upset by his book.
Which I find crazy, since his book is superb and really does show the beauty within a community widely known as the biggest KKK town in the US.

Here's a link to the article.

To be honest, I'm not entirely surprised by this sort of reaction (although I think the book is very sympathetic in general) - the idea of an ex-Clinton staffer (read middle-class college liberal) sort of flying in and making money out of poor small-town folk is bound to raise hackles.  And it is being sold partly on the back of the "most racist town in America" tag.

I also think that the book is a bit strange in falling between the art / documentary viewpoints - not that I think this is a bad thing, but I can see why this might confuse people as to Anderson's motives as well.

Btw, anyone who wants to read the article and doesn't want to register with the NYT can get in via bugmenot.com

It's amazing. I live in the south. I grew up here and there is a weird hard to define line you have to walk as an artist between the grotesque and the real. You know. I mean a photograph, even a journalistic one, is only one moment and isn't true so much as the idea of true. Dave Anderson's book is beautiful because he's really good at what does. I never got how he was making anyone look bad.

I was shooting in this little cross roads town that you wouldn't even know about even if you lived here. We where shooting around an old bottle club across a dirt road from a trailer park. A lady got out her trailer, drove twenty feet across the street to the bottle club and started yelling at us to leave. It's a weird place.

My wife, who grew up in a real small southern town, Lake Butler, says people live in small towns to not be noticed. They don't want understanding or recognition. They mostly just want to be left alone. I think Dave Anderson's book is real nice but I get how angry they are. I'm surprised he seems so confused. It has nothing to with the pictures. I mean everyone seems to be saying that. It's the attention.

I missed the opening and lecture for this show ( my monster in law was in town) I am gonna have to walk across the street today and check it out  before it closes. As for Vidor, it always has been kind of a mystery of a little place, its got quite the reputation around these parts.  My husband hates stopping there even for gas ( and he is white)  but I have really been wanting to check it out as there is an artist there named Charlie Stagg who has the coolest studio.

I was lucky enough to interview Dave Anderson about this work some 18 months or so ago. His passion and enthusiasm for the subject were both infectious and admirable. I suppose the worst thing he could be accused of is naivety, but I don't for a moment believe he realised when he began the project that it would garner the attention and snowball in the way it has. He did it because he had a fascination with the town and its 'label', and a love for the photographic medium. It seems only right that the two eventually dovetailed. There will always be arguments in photography (or indeed any art form) surrounding the concept of an 'outsider' coming along and placing their interpretation on a theme or a setting, but I don't know that there's really any definite right or wrong in it.

Well said Ailsa.
After getting to know him, I would have to agree.
He's a wonderful person who only had the highest intentions.
Funny how intentions can be misconstrued.

Laura--defintely check out the show.
His book is outstanding, but his prints are superb.
Just got a couple of his prints and he defintely learned his art from Keith well.
Let me know what you think of the show when you get a chance

Just got back from the gallery and the prints look wonderful ( as does the book- limited editon only $750 " I'll have three"- joking! but I might save up for the more mass market one)
I really did not get the feeling that he was exploiting the people of Vidor at all. I thought he seemed to show the beauty and frailty of a small town. I also am not surprised he would shoot there as Vidor is only a stones throw away from Beaumont in any case and made a wonderful subject, regardless of the town's past reputation. Ah well, at least the infamy of the show is getting him some well deserved recognition for his talent.

LOL.
I might really make you hate me if you I tell you what's now hanging across from Dave's two prints.
I'll give you a hint.
I wrote about it in my first article for you at B&WP.
It's the print that means more to me than any other since it started me on this crazy fine art ride.
Did you guess?????

I'll give you a hint. The person who shot it taught Dave and I.

???????

But wait....Did you guess which print?

Wow...I think I deserve a slap for rubbing that one in. But hell--I'm so damn happy to have this print I can't even tell ya.

So glad you went Laura.
The work blew me away in person...
I saw the limited edition book at the gallery that reps both of us. Looks amazing.
