As a storm rages outside, the ferries snugged in the harbour and the sheeps wondering what is going on, I sit here toasting my toes in front of t'peat fire in The Summer Parlour admiring my latest masterpiece. Eh? Of course, they are all masterpieces but this one is going annoy everyone who sees it - and that pleases me greatly

. Part of my "Whatever it is... it's overrated" series. Printed on AdoxMCC fibre from a Polypan-f neg made in a Retinette I found lurking around the place. It's Stornoway as Lowry might have seen it through camera viewfinder

Hi all,

This week I've been experimenting with Delta 3200, and the results have been very grainy (I guess I should expect that) and low contrast too. For this print I had to use a #4 contrast filter, which makes me think I'm doing something wrong with the film.

This image was exposed at iso3200 and developed for the recommended time for 6400, but it's still a pretty low contrast negative. At any rate I like the print, but that grain is pretty distracting. Any input from those enjoying Delta 3200 would be appreciated

Jeff - if you want more contrast you can develop Delta 3200 up to ASA 25000 using Ilfotech DDX.

That should give you bags of contrast and grain.

That first image is a masterpiece Andrea..Like it very much!!
This taken in Paris on my recent trip...I think it was at this point that I knew my Holga was at death's door..just sent it off to be repaired....just happy I got several good shots before this happened...
oh, BTW..I think this is when the Japanese tour group was standing beside me repeating over and over..Holga, Holga, Holga..

The contrast looks fine from here ... if you are averse to printing at grade 4, try developing for longer.

The film works much better at ei 1600, I think that is generally accepted speed of the film in most developers. If you want tighter finer grain, use perceptol at 1:3 and expose at somewhere around 800-1600. Development times will be long though - worth bumping temp up to 24 to get that time down a bit.

It's pretty well recognized that higher speed films inherently are low contrast. We usually don't notice simply because low light scenes are usually pretty high in contrast. There's only one way to get finer grain with high sensitivity: Use larger film like 120
Or use low sensitivity film and kill the ambiance with flash.
Choosing a fine grain developer will help... but only so much.

here is a square crop from a 35mm roll of delta 3200 developed in perceptol. I find this dev/ film combination gives less apparent grain than hp5+ at 400 in id-11. You have virtually have your nose against the print to see the grain.

I may go on tour with Baptist Mustang to Baton Rouge and take up with depressed checkout girl in her 30's called Loretta who has an interesting back story surrounding Hurst Shifters. Maybe I'm running on too far with this one but it's Friday and it was a long week and I soooooo need a beer.

This might be my cue to post more pictures of my children in London parks last weekend....

Of the work so far, I love SprayNPray's shot (and some of you will know how I'm a total sucker for some Yashica GSN action), Andrea's kick-off and Sean's tasty 40mm lens. I'm not one for car pictures usually, but Miller's number is a sexy little beast to be sure. To be honest I've enjoyed all of the photos so far (despite the fact that the thread went 'all APUG' for a few posts). Can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with.

Using "astrobeck's" terrific instructions on rerolling 35mm film onto 127 paper I did a test run through my Yashica 44A...I tried the rerolling thing about 3 times and now I feel pretty confident with the entire process...great instructions Becky!!!

No cars here but I really like Phil's Mustang at the church. Other highlights for me so far are Andrea's Lowry and grey_fish's trees in the fog. Top stuff.

Last weekend we went for a walk and I finally used up an unwrapped roll of Tri X which has sat in a drawer unloved for about 3 years. The sun came out so I played around snapping the kids with a red filter - lots of contrast and lots of wierd streaking/edge effects from 1hr stand developing in rodinal. I'm going off the idea. I think it's time to stop being lazy with the developing!

Al, these two are great despite the issues with the chems; really lovely. With Rodders, it always seems to me that it's so quick to do it without the stand that you might as well shake and bake and get the whole thing done in 7 mins. I know it uses up the chemicals quicker, but if you go for 1:50, a bottle still lasts for years (or mine has anyway).

The milkshake shot is wonderful; a lovely moment. I'd second Ed's advice--I've been using Rodinal at 1:50 and liking the results a lot better than 1:100. I'd also recommend you try caffenol if you haven't yet.

Lovely work again this week, favourites being Hookstrap's tunnel, Mr Binn's boat and Grey Fish's VW

The storm rages on outside, more cancelled ferries and the shelves at the co-op look post apocalyptic. Bike play stopped but not film wasting.

Got a roll of redscale film back from the developers yesterday and played around with the scanner and finally got some redscale looking pictures.

The first pic is from the original roll and has been rescanned on different settings (taken using an Espio). The second is from the Rollei B35.

Yep I got lucky with a couple of rolls stand developed a while ago, got a really nice range of tones. But high contrast scenes recently caused problems so I'd really already decided not to risk it anymore and revert to 1:50. I thought I'd keep the dilution high here in an attempt to minimise the tri-x grain, which I don't like that much.. what I guess I should have done was use a normal technique rather than stand dev. Not thinking straight!

On the subject of caffenol I was thinking about giving this a try the other day after buying some washing soda crystals to experiment with rust removal by electrolysis (I do like a bit of diy chemistry!

grey_fish - The differing fields work beautifully on your fog image. Great shot.

The car shots are fun, and Miller's great Triumph image is bringing back memories of teenage years working on one.

Charles, Thanks for the link. I have been using Digital truth for some time, comparing their times to tha manufacturer's suggested times. It's a great resource.

Hi Leon, and thanks for the advice. I have been exposing mostly at 1600, but this roll was 3200. The results have been similar to the image of the negatives below:

On the top is HP5, which is a normal result for me, allowing printing with a 1.5 - 2 contrast filter. The lower negatives are D3200, which are low in contrast and appear underdeveloped too. 20 degrees C, Xtol (stock) 10 minutes with 5 sec agitation every minute. I nearly had to go to a #5 contrast filter. Perhaps Xtol isn't playing nicely, so I'll try another developer and see what happens.

Ed, "(despite the fact that the thread went 'all APUG' for a few posts)" - I assume you're referring to me and point taken with apologies; I'll start a proper APUG themed thread next time to keep the weekenders on track.
