At my son's dentist the other day I picked up an old copy of Smithsonian magazine; inside there was an article about Samuel F. B. Morse, and it turns out he and Daguerre met in Paris and became fast friends.  Both were, apparently, struggling to be recognized for their inventions.  Morse was busy in Paris being ignored by the French government (seeking a patent for his telegraph), and Daguerre was trying to market his new photography method.

bought a book titled The Mercury Visions of Louis Daguerre a few days ago. Haven't gone on reading it yet but it was timing that I bought it on or near his birthday
