Portra film grain
« on: November 05, 2011, 02:18:37 PM »
I just got some Portra 160 this week in the mail. I was wondering if I should have gotten the 400 ASA instead though. Is the grain about the same. I took some baby pictures with both films and I blew up his eye and was surprised that the 400 was sharper. This may have been because of the increased dof, so focusing was not as critical.

It really depends on the format you're using. On 120, the grain difference will be negligible.
On 35mm, you'll see a clear difference at the point where you enlarge it to 8x10.
As a rule of thumb, colors on high ISO film are slightly more muted than low sensitivity film.

Film is the vinyl record of photography.
