It is a fine thread indeed. One which I feel I can now contribute as my health is picking up again after a very poor few weeks or tests and what have you. I even managed a few little POP prints today on some old Kentmere POP paper I found knocking about the place. Gosh, I miss that stuff - although I do have a couple of 5x7 sheets left

. The sun has shone all day here , there's a tall ship in Stornoway harbour [about the 10th one this year] which looked so lovely I pointed an Ilford Sporti at it. Then had a fine stroll and post walk coffee/orange drizzle cake with an ex-work colleague, a session of Reiki then home to see my dear Eve cycling up the road on her borrowed 1961 race cycle ready for the L'Eroica [ http://youtu.be/KcTV9FBHOlM ]in a couple of weeks. I shall be taking a couple of old cameras too :-)
And, I get to read Filmwasters which is always a happy event.

Ohh! I downloaded your entire back catalog of podcasts yesterday. I was listening to a whole bunch of them at work today. Lovely stuff! It helped me to get through the day. I love the episode where you are having a discussion about developing your own film; somebody had developed his XP2 in B&W-chemicals and an excited Phil makes a remark about it: "...it is almost like bloody freestyle..." That comment among other things made me burst into laughter. There is something about the nice blend of characters and the mishmash of british accents and interesting topics that makes these podcasts one of a kind. Really looking forward to the next episode!

Was made redundant yesterday and the wife told me she was leaving me over breakfast this morning. I've just been advised that the bill for repairing the gear box on the car will be almost £1,000 and the vet has confirmed the test results for our cat and its definitely curtains for her. The subsidence at the corner of the house looks to be getting worse by the day and my neighbour's teenage child has just abused me after I criticised him for parking his car across my driveway. The gas bill's about to go up by 16% and my hernia is playing me up badly again.

Still, my almost 'brand new' FM3A arrives today and I've got a few rolls of Acros in the cupboard, so things don't look too bad after all.

Only the last bit is true by the way.....and I've been smiling for a few days knowing that was coming

Hey Graham,

The first bit is actually the "plot" for almost every country and western song ever written. Aside from having spent time in jail for a crime you didn't commit, being regarded as somewhat cowardly, being a drunk and/or gambler and your parents giving you a girl's name, I can't think of any missing elements.

24hrs ago - Andrea called in the lab to see me and I made time to put the coffee pot on and sit and chat (a visit from A is enough to brighten your day, but seeing her looking a lot better really cheered me up) - and I finally sorted out my travel arrangements for L'eroica.

Yesterday was the last day for picking tomatoes at a local farm. And when I entered the kitchen this morning, it really dawned on me: I have a 50 lbs bushel of tomatoes in my kitchen... and it cost me only 5$ since I was one of their last customers of the season! So now I have to eat tomatoes at every chance I get until I have hives

... or just blanch them and save some for all winter long.

And I'm excited today... tomorrow morning is a big rummage sale at the United Church... can't wait to see what I'll find there! I never buy a ton of stuff but it's almost always good stuff. Last year's highlight was a Manfrotto Lightstand. The year before a small electronic flash I use on toy cameras since it has high voltage sync. I also got over the years a Kodak carousel, Polaroid cameras and other stuff I can't even remember.

Well, they were saying the design has changed a lot over the years. It all started when California had the mandatory switch to low volume flush toilets. People started complaining that the reduced flow required multiple flushes to get everything through... so no real water saving there. So, American Standard started inquiring and found out that the regular 5cm flapper valve in the tank was not letting enough water through the system. I just developed 2 rolls of slide film for the first time last night - and they're perfect!
I think I've found a plumber who can actually fix the mess hidden behind my walls at a price that doesn't knock me down.
It's 20 degrees (F) colder than yesterday (yay, early Autumn!)
I stopped home at lunch to a bubbling crockpot ready for serving
I can't wipe the smile off my face after reading this thread (not the least of which is due to how refreshing it is to see how much filmwasters recognize the good stuff all around them)

or make Chutney! that's how we preserve our end of season tomatoes, marrows and just about anything else. Goes nicely with a lump of stilton, or maybe a slop of ripe roquefort and some Bath Olivers:) Now the thought of that REALLY makes me happy

Chutney! A life without chutney is a life half lived.... (seriously- spent a few years in Scandinavia where they eat jam with their cheese. Since we've moved to the U.K this year I've been trying to convince my Danish partner that jam is just a rubbish substitute for chutney and pickle. So far so almost successful). A nice, acrid mature cheddar, oatcakes and chutney make me so ecstatic with happiness its not funny

Also- sloe gin. Just like developing film, everyone has their tricks. Agree on the freezer- means not waiting for the first frost or having to prick them, as if they defrost fast enough they go proper mushy. I've got my bushes marked for two weeks time. I like to put too little sugar in during the steeping, as if its too tart it can always be sweetened afterwards.

Toilet testing! What a job!

I just finished a two day workshop on analog photography, i taught (as a complete amateur) with a good friend of mine (another amateur), for the university's photo club. Everything went smoothly from picture taking to the final print. I'm really glad everything came out quite well, and every attendee seemed very pleased.

Is it late in the day for my usual habits or what!
Well, I've been to that rummage sale I was talking about. I've been there from 9:00 'till 1:00pm... scrounging and searching for hidden treasures (or just plain funky stuff). Had a ton of fun chatting with just every salesmen and cute girls that happened to say hello

Got me a funky belt buckle, a USB cable with the silver shielding on it (iMac style), a nice lava lamp (red blob)... the guy told me it was defective because it was too slow to start

But I know you all want to know the crunchy stuff, so I got a small Vivitar dual format plastic point & shoot that had a brand new film in it (though the story doesn't say how old it really is) and... drumroll please!

An Olympus Pen EES-2 in need of some TLC. The label on it said "4$ Old"... I tried it, the selenium cell still has some life left into it. The shutter works. Film advance is a bit sticky every second wind and the door is a bit hard to open. But apart from that, it's pretty good!

So, now I'm tired but my mind is going Whiiiii!

I also got a Bilboquet for those times when I need to concentrate on something pointless

Saw an Elmarit-R 28mm lens for sale - with a lens hood. Went to the shop and it turns out that the advert was wrong and lens hood wasn't with the lens. Boooooo!!

Anyway, the shop knocked off £50. Yay...!!

......but the lens accepts series 7 filters, held in place by the lens hood........boooooo!! However, there is a traditional filter thread...Yay!!

.......but it's 48mm and no-one's got any of that size in London. Boooooo!!

.......but my mate's got a UV filter in that size, 30 years old but brand new and only £2.99 (the price he'd marked it up at when he bought it years ago).

Very happy with the new lens but it it's always a bit "up and down" with second-hand gear....

Paul, you can get step-up rings that'll convert 48mm filter fitting to 52mm (the more standard size). I have one somewhere here for my Zenit camera (I think. Maybe it was for the Praktica I keep meaning to throw out because it's broken).

I'm happy today because I went on my first bookbinding class and it was fun and I still have dreams and aspirations of making my own book of cyanotypes hehe

Don't throw it out! You can use it to do some other cool things... like this lamp

As for me, today has started out great!
I still can't believe I have a good half frame camera on my desk! Much better than the half frame function of the Diana Mini

My local WalMart has also fixed their C-41 machine, so I'm going to get my roll back in a bit less than one hour

It's also sunny and bright outside... just cool enough for a long sleeve shirt... perfect!

Scored a cute little Olympus Trip 600 with a 28mm lens on the auction site over the weekend for 3 dollars, and it comes with 4 rolls of film!

Also going to pick up a new VW Jetta in Denver on Friday, which means I get to ride the Southwest Chief (train) and take photos along the way up and back home.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the step up rings. I'll Google them but I know SRB Griturn make them to order for "custom sizes" if all else fails. I can also mount the Lee System via a step up ring as well, which just adds to the happiness quotient

This brought me feeling of happiness yesterday...

Mrs M and I were driving into town last night to visit the theatre and as usual we had the proverbial BMW driving a**hole tailgating us for a couple of miles, itching to overtake... eventually he took the risk and zoomed past us doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. After I muttered something about his bad driving there was another car behind us who suddenly overtook us with lots of pretty blue flashing lights... it was an unmarked Police car! He then proceeded to chase after and pull over the offending driver... there is justice after all!!

I had a Korean girl and a German guy (friends of a friend) sleeping in my flat in London as they had nowhere to stay due to a last minute problem. The girl saw my old cameras laying around and was super excited about Polaroid ("all girls love polaroid"). The guy is 20 and didn't even know what Polaroid was.

She used my SLR 680, got tons of funny and curious looks from people on the street, and even the OOF/blurry shots seem to have a charming quality to them. I have had some 600 film packs on the fridge forever and now I'm excited about shooting them again. I may even give Impossible a second chance.

She kept all the pictures (I scanned them) and now she's going to have some great memories of her trip to London. Polaroid is awesome.

Today was an excellent day!
I just love it when neighbors renovate and get rid of stuff I can pick-up and re-use.
Today, two ladies who were doing yardwork for a newcomer gave me some nice Hostas we immediatly planted in the front yard. Another neighbor threw out 3 half sheets of gypsum board I need for my bathroom. And another one gave me some louvered doors I need to close down a closet...

I think nothing makes a better day than free stuff you actually need

This morning, I went to a rummage sale/book sale. I found a nice book about doing photo essays which is bound to be interesting... and two hats.

First one is a straw hat, pretty ordinary.
But the second is... a pith hat!

Yes, the heat can come, I'll be prepared for it.

It wasn't until I read this thread that I realised how much I needed it!

This is the first time I've visited Filmwasters for many weeks, because my commitment (or lack of it) to photography and various projects is something I've been sticking my head in the sand about for quite some time. It's not the only thing I've been sticking my head in the sand about, either, as I feel as if I've lost my way in many aspects of my life. However, here are some of the (many) things I realise I can be grateful for:

• I have a kind, thoughtful husband, who spontaneously suggests things like getting a train to a town along the coast, just to have lunch in a nice restaurant.

• We live within five minutes' walk of the best cinema in the country, and last night went there to see Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy. They also serve superb home-made cake.

• I can run non-stop for 30 minutes. Something I'd never have dreamed of three months ago.

• I have a beautiful greyhound who makes me laugh every day. He's very anxious, but the progress he's made in the past year or so makes me very proud of him.

• Through my involvement with greyhound rescue, I have made a lovely new friend.

• Brighton & Hove Albion are playing the best football I've seen in 17-odd years of following them. Not only that, but they're playing it in a brand, spanking new stadium which serves the best pies I've ever tasted (I swear they must be laced with crack cocaine, they're so addictive).

• I have a job that is only part-time, but pays well enough for me to get by.

• I live in a vibrant city by the sea.

Hopefully, in a few hours from now, I will be able to add to this that Mark Cavendish - who I consider to be the greatest British athlete at the moment - has won the Road World Championship.

Just realised that rather a lot of my things to be happy about are food-related, which speaks volumes!

I thought about putting it in the weekend thread, but it really belongs in the happiness thread.

Aside from my perpetual gratitude for my wife and kid, that I have a job, a place to live with heat, food on the table, and a little dog who believes she's a hot water bottle, I can officially say I'm back into photography.

Struggled through spooling my first roll of 120 ever a couple of nights ago (as you may notice, first roll of film I've put on a reel in 21 years, I think), brewed my first batch of Caffenol C yesterday, and did a little jig in my bathroom about a half-hour later:

My old college roommate is the chief mechanic for BMC, but isn't cycling like curling and it all ends in beer anyway?
