Ordering new 120 film
« on: September 10, 2011, 10:45:05 PM »
I will probably be ordering 120 color film in the next few days. I haven't decided what to get. I will be taking some portrait and some landscape. I have a Rolleiflex 3.5 F. My choices are Fuji Reala asa 100, Fuji 400H professional, Kodak Portra 160, Portra 400, and Kodak Ektar 100. They are all close to the same price even if you order a 5 pack from B&H. Anyone have any suggestions, I have used all of these Kodak films, but none of the Fuji. I will probably send them off to someone who has Fuji equipment. Should that influence my judgment? I may even try Walmart since they send out to Fuji and you don't have to pay postage either way.

I really like the new Portra 160 and 400.  The new 160 runs a bit more vivid (saturated and contrasty) than I expected -- I think it's closer to the old VC than NC -- but skin tones are great.  You can always turn down the saturation a bit to get it how you like it if it's too much.

Reala is also nice, I would say less vivid than the new Portra.

ektar is probably my favorite film right now. works really well with greens and browns, and blues are very solid.

I'm a Fuji fan, though at the rate they're discontinuing film I'll have to change to Kodak.

This was taken with Fuji 400H a couple of days ago. I was testing the new meter.

If you are shooting a mix of portraits and landscapes either Portra 400 or Fuji NPH would fit the bill, Ektar 100 is very fine grained and excellent for lanscapes, OK for Portraits but not the best choice.... IMHO

This is on Ektar with a 3,5F

This on NPH

Is Fuji NPH the same as H400 Prof?

Yes pretty much. Fuji's naming schema is confusing NPS became NSP then I think NPS and is now NS? all 160 emulsions.
I can't keep up....

I far prefer the scanning characteristics of the new Kodak films, though I'll mostly be shooting Fuji for a while since I still have a freezer full from a few bulk eBay purchases where I was able to get it down to $3/roll of 220.

I like Fuji Pro400H, but I LOVE the new Portra 400. Haven't shot the new 160 yet, but all trusted reports say it's a winner as well.

I've shot about half a dozen rolls of Ektar and I'm not convinced. Very punchy in bright daylight but kinda blah and yellow under a gray sky.

Don't do much colour but my preference at the moment is portra 400, didn't really like the results with ektar
