I have no idea what camera to bring. Any pointers - would heavy be silly? The weather looks like it is set fair. I contemplated not bringing one at all and just enjoying the company - that seemed a tad silly!

I think weight is the issue. We're not walking far but, especially if it is warm, I don't think heavy gear is the best idea. I've had days where photography gets forgotten and just making back to the car becomes the most important issue. Then it's not fun anymore. The SWC sounds ideal.

And while I think about it. Given the present weather I don't think it'll be an issue but where we're going in the morning it can get muddy if it's wet. Just a heads up.

You are spot on, Peter.

In my time, I've trekked all over the Lake District, Peak District and Scottish Highlands with an 80 litre rucksack, tent and camera gear and thought little of it. Now I'm older, my knees are shot to hell and I'm a lot heavier, I fully intend to travel light, too.

If it won't fit in my small bag, it's staying at home. The company of fellow FW'ers will make the day as much as the photography.

Nigel, If it's like last time, strong trainers / lightweight boots should be okay. It's a couple of hours gentle walk morning and same again pm - and we'll be breaking for lunch at a nice pub. Paul.

I'll be in walking boots. But as it has been dry you'd probably be OK in something lighter. Only reservation I have is the nice farmer ploughed up the footpath in one place and so the going might be a bit soft there but should be dry I guess.

Peter, I'll get a sweat on walking downhill (as you know). I was just trying to reassure one of our fraternity...

The good news is that there's usually plenty of stops to shoot / catch one's breath. If only I was a younger / fitter man again. Still, if I peg out, at least it'll be doing something I enjoy....I'd hate it to be commuting to / from work

Yet another, in our opinion, excellent day out in the country. A bit of (ahem...) exercise, some great scenery and a friendly bunch of fellow 'togs. Can't wait to get my films processed.........

thanks Peter. I had a great day, and photography aside, it was an excellent opportunity to get to know everyone a little better. Seeing the person behind the thread-posts makes it all the more enjoyable to hang-out here.

I thought the pub was ok - food was fine, beer was nice, we had a good table. It served our purposes, so that is all we needed.

We didn't make it to Avebury - so perhaps that would be a good place for the next ramble? Either that or you are all welcome to a winter walk around east kent?

Just to add my thanks to Peter for organising a great day out! As Leon said it's great to put faces to names, it certainly helps when replying to posts knowing you've actually met them!

I found the pub quite acceptable albeit a little bit pretentious in a gastro pub sort of way... give me a local spit and sawdust establishment any day.

I'll be up for a Kent ramble Leon. I could also organise a South Suffolk/Essex ramble if anyone up for it...?

Paul & Leon - as a resident of north Essex, anywhere from Lincolnshire to Kent and out to Wiltshire is within a pretty easy striking distance, so I'm up for practically any such venue at the weekends - given a little prior notice.

I'm particularly keen to find some bleak and interesting places along the Suffolk / Norfolk coastline - especially when I get my mitts on the 5x4 (hopefully soon) as it's somewhere I've tried to shoot but with little success.

Incidentally, Lara and I were really liked the pub. A bit pricey compared to Essex but nice food and I could have quaffed that Cider all afternoon.....

A grand day and no mistake, and no amphibians harmed to my knowledge. Sorry I had to pop off early, I had to return to carto my good lady for her to return to Kent. I stayed on and went to Avebury and other places to finish the rolls as it were and do a bit of pinhole. It gets busy in the sun but there are many quieter standing stone just outside. Also went to the mill at Wilton and snapped a lovely '47 Morris Eight.

Thanks to Peter, and my Pork Belly (the one on the plate) was lovely.
