It's Thursday...er, I mean, the "Weekend" again.........!!
« on: July 28, 2011, 11:00:19 PM »
Well, it's been a while since I started one of these, so here goes. Three shots taken at a wet and windy classic car show at Cressing Temple Barns in Essex, just down the road from where I live.

Leica M6 TTL, 50mm Summicron-M for the "Mascot" shot and 28mm Elmarit-M for the other two. Fuji Neopan 400 CN Professional  (C41 processable). Given a bit of a tweak in Silver Efex Pro for a bit of "age".

Lovely work, Phil. I get the impression, from your shots, that a lot of Texas is a desolate, dust bowl of a place. It reminds me of the work of a director about whom I saw a documentary not so long ago. I might be wrong but I think it could have been Wim Wenders.

Oddly, Paul, it is quite a green place for the large part. West Texas is dessert. I guess I am looking for this kind of scene. Thank you for saying Phil and Wim Wenders in the same sentence!

Paul - like the first shot - making the most of the weather!
Phil - another great gas station - who needs Ed Ruscha?

Two more from me with the Voigtlander Bessa R2M.  I didn't intend the soft focus look (low light, fuji acros, no tripod, etc), but maybe it helps create a certain atmosphere?

Another brilliant shot Phill!

I finally managed fixing the focusing in my Yashica 635 and here are few
shots from the first film test.

The camera is fitted with the Yashikor lens and apparently has an inferior quality
comparing to the Yashinon, even though I absolutely love the bokeh on the pictures with
the lens at f3.5.

The negative is badly scratched, the rollers weren't straight and the edge of the film got "shredded" :P
in one side, all fixed now.

Fuji Across 100 - Rodinal stand 1:100 and sepia filter.

Happy weekend, y'all,

So I got my Yashica Mat back from the repair guy in record time.  It was away from me only seven days, which is pretty amazing.  He fixed several problems so I'm excited to get out there and do some shooting.  I took a quick roll of FP4 at lunch yesterday and the results aren't half bad.  This is a digipic of the negative.

Cheers,

Jeff

I think these look pretty darned good, sapata, and the focus looks right on to me.   I like the out of focus areas.  Congratulations on the repair!

Mauricio - Good work! Glad to see another tlr revived and working. Nice shots too.

Great start Paul!  I adore old cars and car shows.
Phil- well, you always have such a great atmospheric photo to share.
Note about Texas....it's been over 100F for over two weeks there, so they are all well done.
Sapata, those are wonderful, I really like the mood of these.
Greyfish- about those chairs...I like the soft focus!
Gregor- the first one is a keeper!

Jeff- who is your Yashica repair guy.  I think my Mat could use some adjusting and cleaning and new seals.

Jeff- who is your Yashica repair guy.  I think my Mat could use some adjusting and cleaning and new seals.

I used Mark Hama because his name kept coming up on searches and he worked for Yashica back in the day.  After he received my camera he called me and was so happy to tell me that he had assembled my camera when it was new.  Pretty cool!  I asked him if he wanted a list of things that I knew or suspected were wrong with the camera, and he said, "No.  Believe me, I made this camera.  I'll completely disassemble it and test everything"

Well, okay then.

:-)

He replaced the light meter, adjusted the focus which was pretty far off, fixed the non-functional self-timer and did the normal cla things.  All the controls now operate smoothly.  Well worth the small, flat fee he charges I think.

A few days with Mr Windy's TLR Holga - which I just don't get on with  :-\ . Caught a surfer or two down on the beach one day. on Foma 100.

Then there's Alexander, my work colleague talking work at the cafe - as we do [sometimes].

Then there's the shearing that The Crofter finally got round to doing the other day - on the croft not 200m from where I write. [ see http://islandcrofters.blogspot.com/]. Both these with the Zorki and Rollei400s

Shot some Fomapan this morning but it's in the bathroom drying.  Here are a couple more from that last roll of Portra NC I shot in Montreal.  Same old Exakta VXIIa, Meyer 100mm lens.  The first was shot in Concordia University's building on Rue MacKay, the second is a closed restaurant on Prince-Arthur and the third is Sunday morning in Square Saint-Louis

Wow Terry... I haven't been there in so many years!
The only times I go to Montreal is when I have to get some things at the camera store (Lozeau on Saint-Hubert street)

Last time I was at Square Saint-Louis was for University (field work). The city had the inside of the fountain painted blood red and there was a big electronic sign counting the number of HIV positive people on earth in real time... it was pretty freaky.

Especially good stuff this weekend, I think.

Mauricio - bokeh is amazing!
Jeff - really like the lines and composition in square format
Gregor - first is beautiful
Sean - especially like the second - very evocative of baking heat
Andrea - like all three - particularly the light in the last
Terry - like the second a lot

Don't dabble too much with colour, but just got a few films back from the lab, including these shot with Diana F on Superia 400.

sapata - Yashica bokeh looks very “19th century” – swirly.  Interesting look.
Vicky - what a beautiful shape formed by the legs in the central part of the piece you posted.
Someone mentioned Wim Wenders & Texas; Wenders made the movie "Paris, Texas” about which Wikipedia says The photograph shows a desert landscape, although the real Paris, Texas rests on the edge of the forests of East Texas, far from any desert.
Anyway here is a photo from Paris, France.  One of short series I’m printing of bridge scenes there.  Mamiya 6, 50mm, FP4, printed on Ilford MG WT RC.
[just edited the jpg to make it a bit closer in tone to the print it was scanned from, still not quite right but now closer]

@ Dave Elden.

I mentioned Wim Wenders back up at the start of the thread. I've been having a think about this and I'm pretty sure I saw (or read about) Wim Wenders becoming a half-decent photographer because he used to go searching for film locations and would photograph them so he'd know where he'd been. Some of Phil's work reminded me of the places / style - though I reckon Phil's stills are better than Wenders'. Dunno whether Phil shoots movies, though  ;)

As for your shot of Paris, can I suggest you check out the following website:

http://www.dorothybohm.com/main.php?section=gallery&page=cities

Dorothy had a book published called "Un amour de Paris" (of which I have a copy) and your shot bears more than a passing resemblance to one or two of her shots / locations. Really lovely photo, by the way.

Note to self: I really must go visit Paris one day....

Hey! I can finally join in. On holiday in Cornwall still and using the Land Cam every other day. Almost out of 100 series film though, so will have to resort to the 5x4 field cam for the last few days. These shot with my Polaroid Land Camera 360 on Polapan 664 and Polacolor 125i film. 'Scanned' with my Nokia N8 in the absence of a real scanner.

Thanks for the comments and the link to Dorothy Bohm - who I wasn't familiar with before.  I suspect it would be very difficult - certainly beyond my capabilities - to take an entirely novel photograph in Paris.  It must be one of the most photographed cities!

Garry Winogrand once said:
We know too much about how pictures look and should look. And how do you get around making those pictures again and again?

Anyway here is another Paris photograph.  In fact this was inspired by a previous photographer's work.  I stood by the Pont Neuf in the same place as Geoffrey James set up his camera to make the image you can see here: http://www.gallery.ca/en/see/exhibitions/past/details/utopia-dystopia-the-photographs-of-geoffrey-james-108
I did take a picture similar to his, at least taken from the same place, but he used an 8x10 camera with movements and I realised I was not going to get that shot.  So I looked around, moved my tripod  and took my own picture (if you look at the James image you will be able to see where I would have taken mine from to the left of the frame:

Some damn fine images this week.

Paul - your first B&W of the car mascot is gorgeous
Phil - do you ever make a bad image!?
Jeff - wonderful perspective
Vicky - have been following your ebony & ivory images on flickr, they are rather special
