Homage To Skorj(alina)
« on: January 14, 2007, 10:20:52 PM »
*****************************************************************************************
??? :-\ :-* WARNING: This section contains a lot of in-jokes. You may want to skip the text and straigh to the photos  :D ;D
*****************************************************************************************

Like I said earlier, Damion and his infinitely better half, Kelly (also known as 'The Wife'), came down to London this weekend; ostensibly because it was Kelly's birthday, but in reality the excursion was all about myself and D getting some quality photo time under our belts on Saturday. We wanted to 'theme the outing' and decided to pay homage to the other 3 Wasters-In-Chief: Susan, Leon & Skorj by taking a series of photos in their style.*

However upon closer inspection the plan had one or two significant flaws:

Susan
"Er, she's a bit good isn't she?"
"I was thinking that too. Hmmm, could be a problem."
Neither of us really knew where to start with this one, so we blamed it on the lack of a scenic desert in South London and the unwillingness of either of us to investigate our dreams deeply enough to commit them to film and moved onto the next candidate in our list.

Leon:
"....Actually, he's pretty good too. One of those technical types. You can tell because more or less all of his photos seem to be in focus."
"He must be, your mother-in-law likes his stuff doesn't she, Damion? Not sure we could compete with that. Anyway, he usues a tripod quite a lot and mine's in the shed, so we may have to give 'doing a Leon' a miss this time round."
In addition to the tripod not being readily available, we also blamed the lack of boats and old castles in my part of town.

Skorj:
"So that's two off the list, how about Mark?"
"Er, well his stuff's wicked too, not to mention full of Japanese people, but we do have a few Land Cameras lying about the place don't we?"
"Good call. I even have some film packs that are less than 5 years out of date....should be a breeze."
"After all, he is an Aussie so how hard can it be? We taught them everything they know."
;D :D

.....or something like that (*actually we just went out for a coffee with the girls and Amy and just snapped a few 'roids while we were walking, but one of mine came out looking Skorj-like so I concocted a whole fiction around it just to keep you all amused ;D)

I'm hoping D will add some of his snaps to this thread when he gets home in a day or two, but for now here are my two homages to Kuroneko himself. One taken on Northcote Road in Clapham, the other taken in the house before we went out.

The first of the two snaps above is obviously cropped. I like the original, but thought it looked better cropped. Damion preferred the original...and now I'm not sure which I prefer. I know there's this whole "I crop in-frame while I'm shooting" bravado rife amongst people like me who actually aren't partciularly accomplished photographers and if pushed, I suppose I'd lean that way even now, but almost everything that I've ever had had published has been cropped to some extent, so maybe it's time for me to grow up and embrace the crop tool in Photoshop.

Anyway, after the big build-up, here's the original. Is it better than the crop or does the crop add some punch?

I like the crop if for nothing else than the symmetry of it.
And I repeat from an earlier post, I'm really glad you're back in the shooting game Ed.

Have to agree re the crop - looks good square and not sure what the area you have cropped out adds to the story?

Cheers for the feedback. I'm not going mad after all then?  :)

The crop is the one.

So near, yet so far. The correct Skorj pedestrian crossing to use was only about 20 yards away, top right of your photo by the looks of it.

No zebra stripes? Schoolboy error I'm afraid  ;)

Al, the image I had in mind when I set up my observation tent, steadied my Polaroid, uncorked the thermos and sat down to wait for "the decisive moment" was this little beauty. Not a zebra in sight, but I do know what you mean  :)

, whats wrong with you people, it should not be cropped!!!!! if nothing else this has been a useful excercise in why will never be a successful photographer...my audience is broken.

anyway -i wonder just how famous bresson would have become if he only had access to a joycam and expired film.

i think i like the uncropped better... seems a bit more spontaneous and more 'street'. granted, there's not much happening in in the cropped off area, but i like the balance of the figures better. flows.

Snork! Where to start? Errr... thanks. Flattered. I think. I prefer the uncropped version of course. I rather like it in fact. Modern street scene with the edgy noise of a Land Camera. Makes my pulse race. Makes me want to get goop on my hands. More!

Oooh.  Love the shot, Ed.  Uncropped.  It makes me want to get up and run somewhere.

no crop
more energy, more happening, less predicatable, more about the street than the people. (unless the people are extra special to you and then you don't care what's goin on around them.

Crop it, chop it and serve it up any way you like but I always prefer the square format.

Personally, I'm a usually a no crop kind of guy. But I have a real soft spot for the square format and, in this case, it really really works for me. Nice stuff!

Another vote for square here. At first glance it didn't grab me but it's growing on me something fierce now! Good job!

Also I sympathise with your decision to wimp out postpone a tribute to Susan and Leon.

Having been a tripod down from Leon on a couple of occasions and seen our respective results I think I'd want a little time to practice too. A couple of decades would do it, except for the fact that the irritating druid keeps getting better! (Some people have no consideration...!)

As for Susan, well I've long been of the opinion that the lady is a sorceress who doesn't actually use a camera but simply captures her most beautiful dreams in silver. I challenge anyone to copy that!
