First vid: I liked the video but it is overlong- you could hit all the right points regarding the coolness of rangefinders in about 5 minutes. If you want to convince people make it short & sweet I'd say.

Second vid: Whoah dude! Calm down. Cameras are just cameras after all. Let other people use what they want. I love it when people think mine are old fashioned trash. I just smile blithely and keep shooting. It really helps in some circumstances when folk don't take you seriously.

PS: I share your love for the M5 (it is a slab of '70s beauty), the XA and the Zorki 4. Also like the Kievs (BTW- the Kiev is a copy of the Contax and not the Nikon S2 (which is also a Contax copy))

You lost me at "I was saving money to get this camera" while having a M9 with a titanum lux, an M8, an M2 or M3, and a couple other leicas on the table...:)

But they have got a point. Rangefinders are outdated, like polaroid is outdated and even film is outdated. I find it hard to find anything other than Kodak Gold or generic rebranded Agfa when I am in my hometown (Barcelona) so I end up buying most of it in London. Today I was at heathrow and there were dozens of new digital cameras, not a single rangefinder among them. It's a shame but it is what it is. I wish all countries were like Tokyo, which has got a thriving film and mechanical camera culture.

But like DS said, in a way it's good, as people don't take you seriously if you are carrying an old piece of film junk, so you look harmless. Plus RF's are very good conversation starters.

The only thing that I don't like is that as it becomes a smaller niche most RF users live in a bubble and everything is becoming overpriced.

I love the quote at 09.30 -

"this is one of my favourite Leicas - apart from all the others"

Mijonju - I know I have a bit of a reputation of playing the "Bad Moderator" here at filmwasters, but I do feel we need to keep the forum and site true to our purposes when we created the site - otherwise we run the risk of it becoming like all the other photography related sites:

Filmwasters is a site for creative film (or other process using non-digital light-sensitive chemical emulsions) photography.  We do have an element of gear discussion here too - which is inevitable, albeit in a sense of how to use the gear creatively. And your movies about film cameras are great - it's always amazing to see the range and depth of film-camera related stuff that is available in Japan.  But we are a film site - so I am asking please, please please (please?) no more stuff about digital cameras - (please again?).

Your thoughts on the M8 and M9 RFs and the X100 are interesting, dont get me wrong, but this is not the place to discuss them. I'm enjoying certain digi cameras too right now, but I wont bring that joy here as it goes against the grain (!?!) of Filmwasters aims.

Keep the (film-made) photo in mind, and you wont go far wrong.

Hey Mijonju

I can understand your quick rant at those who think Rangefinders have no place in modern photography. It is important to be passionate at what we love and it's only natural to be quite defensive when many think that what we do, or our tools are outdated or have been superseded somehow. I'm always using film cameras and I always tend to get the same types of opinions from others, even my own friends. "How can you use that, you don't even know what you're going to get, and you still have to develop it?", was spoken by a friend with his D7000 monstrosity. While I understand it's good to stand your own ground when it comes to what we love, we must also make sure that our emotions don't cloud our thoughts and that our actions don't end up discriminating others be it digital or not for our own sake. I guess that would be considered reverse-discrimination?

I forgot to show you when I met you in person at Map Camera in Shinjuku with your wife, but I also had a Kiev 4AM with me alongside my Nikon L35AF I showed you. I wasn't sure if you were interested in that type of camera, but I should have figured that out with all the Leicas you were looking at. My wife Pia really liked the M series Leicas and she was happy she could play with these multi thousand dollar beasts. I've included a picture of my own 4AM, Buona giornata!

What's with all the digital talk?  I don't see what a debate about new fuji point-n-shoots and digital Leicas that cost more than cars have to do with photography, much less film photography.

I for one am at a point where I just don't care about this debate... Been there, done that, moved on.

I just shoot with whatever I have and can get my hands on for cheap. I don't care what companies are selling or what people tell me I should be shooting. I just do my thing and try not to worry about stuff.

Oh and BTW, I do second Leon's observation that Filmwasters isn't really the place to be linking to video discussions about digital cameras. Sorry, Michel. You know I'm a huge fan of the Mijonju show and that it was the inspiration behind me starting up the Filmwasters video podcast. I also know that you're a film freak as much as the rest of us and I really appreciate your energy and insight when you post on this forum, but if the episode is as digital-centric as this one it's best not to link to it here.

Haha, I don't know why I didn't show it to you. Perhaps I was thinking since you were looking at ¥200,000+ Leicas, why would he be interested in my ¥4000 Kiev 4AM? I've considered Anodizing it in Black, but I'll keep the 4AM original. I also had a Nikon D3100 in my Domke, but since talking about *igital is taboo around here, let's just say I was using it as an expensive light meter with RGB color display!

I saw a Snap Shot magazine at Bunkyodo book store in Shibuya and was thinking it was a female camera magazine, because there was one next to it that was similar to Snap Shot, but had a lot of stuff catering to women photographers, accessories, lots of Olympus Pen stuff, and toy cameras.

If you can get me one, let me know. I saw it on Amazon.jp for ¥ 880, but if you can get it cheaper elsewhere, even better. Let me know the total and I can paypal you if you like.

Here's my Ricoh GR10 I got at (Hello Camera...LoL) Camera Box for ¥3100.

are toy cameras and Olympus Pen cameras only for women then?

I've never heard such a thing as a gender-specific camera!

What is a man's camera then? is it a size thing?  Maybe Linhofs? Here's a nice pink one for all the real men:

It is unfortunate that you took what I wrote the wrong way and assumed that I had specifically implied an opinion on my part. It could very well be how I wrote that sentence that made you leap to your assumption. So for the sake of clarification, I will describe exactly what I probably meant to say, again just in case I made grammatical errors, that lead you to believe I would make such a dense statement.

As Mijonju can probably be my witness and any other persons who more then just passing through would have noticed, Japan is a very photographic friendly society, more so then any other western nation I have visited.. With that said, it is not inconceivable that photography in Japan would be broken down into separate sub-genres where different groups and individuals can enjoy the hobby as they like. Still following me? It is not unusual to see magazines that cater to these separate genres in Japan and one genre that you probably won't see much in our western society's male dominated hobby is Photographic magazines created for the female enthusiast. These magazines as I have noticed have more about film photography then any other English magazine I have seen on the new stands today. Items that you will see in these magazines, as I have mentioned previously, are stuff like leather carrying bags, cute frames, photobooks, toy camera reviews, locations that cater to these types of items like Monogram in Tokyo (http://www.monogram.co.jp/), carrying straps and yes some information on smaller *igital cameras like the chic Olympus Pen that I alluded to earlier. I did not even mention the huge after-market of accessories that they have for those cameras that even my wife thought were cute. There was even a whole section devoted to how different films looked on cameras like the Diana and LC-A. It was a really fun and informative read, well if you can read Japanese that is. So when I said they "had a lot of stuff catering to women photographers, like accessories, lots of Olympus Pen stuff, and toy cameras.", I meant that is what I saw in the magazine. That was an observation, not an opinion!

While cameras are usually gender-neutral, there are some cameras, that have women in mind when it comes to marketing. If you don't mind photographing with a pink dress superheadz camera, that's your prerogative. I certainly won't call you out for doing so. I'll just snicker :)

Nope-  i didn't think anything about opinions, or sub-genres  - just making a joke about the general ridiculousness of  gender specific camera.

that's about it really.

I'll take a picture using a handbag, whilst wearing a dress and holding Freddie Mercury's hand if it gets me the picture I want.
