It is unfortunate that you took what I wrote the wrong way and assumed that I had specifically implied an opinion on my part. It could very well be how I wrote that sentence that made you leap to your assumption. So for the sake of clarification, I will describe exactly what I probably meant to say, again just in case I made grammatical errors, that lead you to believe I would make such a dense statement.
As Mijonju can probably be my witness and any other persons who more then just passing through would have noticed, Japan is a very photographic friendly society, more so then any other western nation I have visited.. With that said, it is not inconceivable that photography in Japan would be broken down into separate sub-genres where different groups and individuals can enjoy the hobby as they like. Still following me? It is not unusual to see magazines that cater to these separate genres in Japan and one genre that you probably won't see much in our western society's male dominated hobby is Photographic magazines created for the female enthusiast. These magazines as I have noticed have more about film photography then any other English magazine I have seen on the new stands today. Items that you will see in these magazines, as I have mentioned previously, are stuff like leather carrying bags, cute frames, photobooks, toy camera reviews, locations that cater to these types of items like Monogram in Tokyo (
http://www.monogram.co.jp/), carrying straps and yes some information on smaller *igital cameras like the chic Olympus Pen that I alluded to earlier. I did not even mention the huge after-market of accessories that they have for those cameras that even my wife thought were cute. There was even a whole section devoted to how different films looked on cameras like the Diana and LC-A. It was a really fun and informative read, well if you can read Japanese that is. So when I said they "
had a lot of stuff catering to women photographers, like accessories, lots of Olympus Pen stuff, and toy cameras.", I meant that is what I saw in the magazine. That was an observation, not an opinion!
While cameras are usually gender-neutral, there are some cameras, that have women in mind when it comes to marketing. If you don't mind photographing with a pink dress superheadz camera, that's your prerogative. I certainly won't call you out for doing so. I'll just snicker
