Polaroid SX70 - I WANT ONE..........!!!
« on: October 29, 2010, 09:08:52 AM »
A short while ago, I started spending a bit of time (and a bit of money) buying some secondhand film gear from Aperture Photographic on Museum St, Bloomsbury, London. Apart from my friend, Mike Perry, who runs David Lipson Photography in Great Dunmow, Essex, they are about the only retailers I deal with regularly.

On one of the visits I stumbled across a book of photos of Venica by Dorothy Bohm. I loved it and started looking for a copy. It was out of print but I could get a secondhand one from Amazon. No problem.

By pure chance, and before I bought the book off Amazon, I met a fine art print dealer at a photofair in London who, by a quirk of fate of Biblical proportions, turned out to represent Dorothy Bohm's work in the UK. I now have two books (Venice and Paris) signed by Dorothy Bohm.

When I went to pick the books up from Dorothy's representative, she showed me a dozen or so prints made by Dorothy at the time the negatives were taken and processed. They were stunning. However, in a little box, she had 9 Polaroids taken by Dorothy in the 1970's / 1980's (I guess) and they were just beautiful.

Forgive me but, until then, I've never really considered Polaroid photos as a true art form. Quirky, interesting, colourful in an other-worldly sort of way - but never "art". Until now.

Where can I get an SX70? Are there any other Polaroid models that are capable of similar results? I know Polaroid film is as rare as hens' teeth but what else (mono or colour) is there available?

I've seen the light and it's changed my view of what I'd always regarded as a bit of an oddity....

with the Impossible Project's resurrection of SX-70 photography, you'll be lucky to find one for less than a small fortune I'm afraid.

Do a completed items search at Ebay and you'll see how much ... top of the list - one sold for £376!

madness.

I got mine when it was all less popular.

Sadly, I'd say you're almost out of luck as far as good, rich coloured film available for the sx-70 unless you don't mind mirror images, in which case you can try the instax wide format and the rather faff-filled method I describe here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi4bhwFq9Rs. The existing out of date 600 film on ebay is overpriced and probably won't produce as lovely colours.

It was really beautiful stuff, 600 film in the sx-70 :(

^that one is one of 6 that proudly hang on my wall that I've taken.

For buying an sx-70, check out some photofairs if you have any remaining near you but be aware that they'll probably in the price range that leon suggested. I got mind in a charity shop for mumbleityamount which I won't embarrass myself with saying anymore. To be honest they were never a very cheap camera anyway, it's only by dumb luck do you get a bargain of a working one under £100.

May I also suggest Andre Kertesz The Polaroids book? I finally bought a copy last year and it's beautiful. Light on words, beautiful pictures.

You can probably still find an SX70 camera at a garage sale (or something similar). I got mine at a flea market years ago. The problem is, the new film being made, while interesting, has nowhere near the color that real Polaroid film had.

There's another interesting (old) book of Polaroid work: 'Beyond the Surface', by Irma Eibich.

I've seen a few go pretty cheap on netauktions here in sweden recently... like $50. they were double that earlier this year.
I'm guessing a few bought from ebay, tried some TIP film, and they're now selling theirs. or maybe they just saw the hype and they're trying to get rid off some old stuff.

£376.........???!!! Now I have been known to pay over the odds for the odd bit of photo-ephemera but that figure is out of the question. I'm actually not that worried about colour film (though it would be nice) as my passion is mostly for mono.

I will definitely keep an eye out for a working example when in secondhand stores, car boot stalls and photofairs.

Thanks also for the heads up on the books. I'll check out both. Kertesz is a favourite of mine. I have a couple of his books including "On Reading" which I look at regularly. I never imagined he'd use a Polaroid....

Isn't it amazing that as soon as something's gone, everyone wants it back? Polaroid must be kicking themselves....

Yes, it's both amazing and a shame what the Impossible Project has done to prices of the SX-70.   As far as finding your own, it doesn't hurt to continue watching 'the bay' but great idea from Heather to keep an eye out at flea markets, antique shops... and hey, how about classified ads as well as.... does the UK have a "craig's list" type of website?  That's where we in the US often have our best prices.

I mainly use 600 film with mine and used to get stunning dreamy exposures.  Now, the aging of my supply (I suppose?) is changing the output.  I shot about 60 images this summer but the colors were not what they used to be.  Not discouraging, just different.

Still.... it's one of my very favorite cameras and today draws nearby observers like an excited swarm of bees to honey.   I think it just makes people happy :)

One last comment - what Heather said: The Polaroids is a stunning book.  My bookcases are filled with photography books and that one is a true treasure.

Well, I have a big "half century" birthday coming up end of next March and, unless I've acquired one beforehand, I'll be setting my beloved the task of finding one and "chipping in" towards it as part of my birthday pressie.

I'm not aware of a site such as "Craig's List" but we do have "Loot.com" and local trade press, so I might just bump into one on my cyber-travels.

In the meantime, however, I'm having fun with 35mm and 6x6 film more than I did 20 years ago and, as part of a part-analogue / part digital "hybrid" workflow, I can create some interesting effects to keep myself amused. I've even found a nice little 6x6 projector so I can see my trannies properly.

My missus will be pleased....... ;)

Yes, the Kertesz book and the story behind it is fantastic and quite sad also...

This is the last SX-70 I picked up on EBAY about 12 months ago for about 35 pounds with case... The accessories are also worthwhile for specific shots but do not dismiss the cheap plastic model 1000... It is capable of great shots also.

As Heather said the good ole days are over, I was lucky to be able to buy original SX-70 film back in the day and manipulate on the fly straight after it popped out... Jeez do I miss it and as much as the I.P. stuff is okay it is no replacement...

On its death I collaborated on this dry article...

Now then Mr. Miller, you said "the last SX-70 I picked up on EBAY". Does this mean you have more than one...??? If so, that is just not fair.....

Fabulous photos as well, by the way. Liverpool Street is where I commute to and from during the week. It usually only looks like that after a VERY heavy session  :D

Have you seen the "Peter Gabriel" album covers. I believe the artist achieved that effect by jigging about with a stick on the unopened photos. Not sure if it's true but it's a very different look...

Did I read it is your birthday today? If so - Many happy Returns...... ;D

After I could not get the film at a reasonable price I sold the few I had... Once I.P. came about I picked this one up...

Yes, the Taschen Polaroid book is a must as it can be had for about £10.00... For now...

Oh, I just used the top from a Bic pen as it had so many different contours that I could use depending on the image and how I wanted to manipulate it...

Yes, the Peter Gabriel album pic was a manipulation.

Quite true. I've tried some decade old 600 film... and it was very bad. It had only one color: poo brown!
I am now going through the few packs I have left from 2008. The results are already more brownish than expected.

Somehow, the days of luscious Polaroid colors is long gone.

The Instax film is quite different. It gives "Popsicle" like colors. It's a different look but still quite nice.

I second the Polaroid Taschen Book... when I bought mine it came sealed inside a silver polaroid pack... So cool...

When in London, HMV in Oxford Circus is selling for 7.00 GBP...  :o a real bargain for such wonderful book.

My god, the Peter Gabriel Melt photo was a color photograph?!

Seriously one of my favorite albums ever.  On a vaguely unrelated note, I'm also hunting for an SX-70 since my OneStep 600 was destroyed by my puppy.

i see them going for about the same price on ebay...around $60-$70. i think i paid $60 for my alpha 1 model 2 a few years ago and $35 for my white model 2. this was pre-IP, but there are like 300 for sale on ebay right now and there are some ending in a couple hours with no bids.

doesn't really matter which you get except for the model 3 that you defnly don't want. the rest is just a matter of tripod socket or built in strap...

my black i have modified for 600 and the white is for sx/px-70...

Pearl Jam/No Code with subliminal message... Some cool individual shots and Dennis Rodman being a fan of the band appears. (If I remember right, he considered ending himself while blasting their noise)...

The album art, as with most of the best album art of that era, was by a creative team called "Hipgnosis". I remember reading an article when the album came out in 1980 about how they'd shot hundreds of Polaroids and generally messed with them to get the effect that they, and Peter Gabriel, wanted.

I, too, am a big PG fan. I was a big Genesis fan until Phil Collins came out from behind his kit and the band went from Prog to Pop.

I'm being really bad here and not reading the whole thread before posting as i'm rather drunk.

To be honest they were never a very cheap camera anyway, it's only by dumb luck do you get a bargain of a working one under £100.

i picked my SX-70 off ebay for £40 including postage and it works perfectly. It wasnt dumb luck, i simply persistently hunted for someone who didnt know what they had and was selling it as spares and repairs however an in depth look into the listing and a few questions to the seller soon revealed that they simply had no way of testing it and were under the impression that the film for it was 100% extinct!

its a model 2 plastic body however says alpha on the body (if anyone can enlighten me to as why then i would be greatful)

I re-skined it myself with a hunter s. thompson themed skin i designed on... im ashamed to admit, microsoft paint (as my photoshop trial has run out. oh well just reformat and i can use it again for another 30 days :-P)

as soon as i have enough cash i will be buying some first flush impossible px-70 colourshade and some v06 silvershade for it. so far ive just been messing around with insanely out of date film that has barely even come out.

Its an amazing camera mainly cuz of the great shallow depth of field images you can get, which as mijonju will explain, despite its f8 minimum apperture due to the large format at which it records your images the depth of field appears far shallower than expected.

I went pretty crazy for my SX/70 Sonar earlier in the summer but now I've sort of moved on. It is a really wonderful camera, even sort of a technological marvel but I'm just sort of meh about it now. I think if the material were not as expensive as it is, I'd love it more.

The first shot with my SX70.

Okey-dokey....!

I've just bid on an el-cheapo (but, apparently, working) "Polaroid 1000" SX-70. It isn't the neat folding jobbie version but does take the SX-70 film and "600" film but, for reasons not disclosed, cartridges have to be modified for the "600" film. Very cryptic but I'm sure someone here might be able to de-cryptify the message.

Please save my blushes if this is the ultimate dog's dinner version of the SX-70 line. I'm bidding because I think I can get it for less than £15 - which is more than enough if I can't get decent ammo and / or I get bored of it quickly and / or the bloody thing doesn't actually work and I have to spend more money hunting down the vendor  ;)

The 1000 is a great camera even with its softer plastic lens... Okay, close ups are out the 'picture'..  :-\

A SX-70 ND filter available for peanuts on the Bay will enable the use of 600 film also..

Should score for 15 notes methinks (mine about a pound at a boot fair) and I shot this with a 1000... Oh, and the flash was actually made by Boots the Chemists and has an up/down diffuser no less...

Very funny skorj :)
I always wanted to re-flash some ram the easy way  ;D

Well, SX-70 was 150 ISO film. 600 format was 600 ISO film. Since everybody had an SX-70, if they made the 600 film totally compatible, everybody would complain that their images are all overexposed (remember that these were "consumer" products. So, Polaroid made a series of little locks on the cartridges so that one model's film can't fit in the other camera. But now, TIP makes "universal" cartridges so all you have nothing to worry about.

yeah you don't have to remove the nubs. just use an old ejected card or bad pola, place it along the bottom of the film pack entry port and slide the pack in, then just pull the card out. if you google it there will be plenty of explanations.

Haven't tried the IP yet...

Hey LD.
I just got my SX-70 Sonar for 90 dollars U.S. It came with a leather case, manual and working flash unit and I really love it. It focuses up to 10.5 inches on its own and I can get even closer by putting macro lenses over its lens.
I think some of the SX-70 models may not be SLRs. I think it needs to have that little view piece on the top in order to be an SLR but I really dont know for sure. Im sure somebody here would know better than me.

Mine is a sonar model as well, if I'm not wrong apparently this model was developed based on the sonar system of bats. The camera send waves which bounces back to the camera and then the lens focus based on this information.

there is a little switch on the front of a sonar that allows you to self focus...

Totally true. And if you try and shoot through glass, you'll get a very sharp picture of the glass and a very fuzzy picture of what you're trying to photograph  :-\

Amazing technology with a few drawbacks...

LOL! Not sure about bats. A huge bat flew into my living room window the other night so maybe glass confuses them. ;D

I use the manual focus almost always. I prefer it.

That explains why Batman always get inside places breaking through the window ! :o
