DIY adjustable ND filter
« on: July 13, 2010, 03:02:00 AM »
While chatting in NYC the subject of ND filters popped in and I remembered seeing this so I thought I pass it on for those who might be interested.  http://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Variable-Neutral-Density-Filter/

Very classic.

I can't remember if it's Tiffen or B+W that marketed such a filter years ago...

that is very clever indeed, I'm trying to think of a reason why there's a problem with that idea - it just seems too simple!

genius.  will have to try - -4 to -14 seems like a really useful range too. the only draw back I can see is knowing exactly how much light is being blocked for metering purposes - not a problem if you've TTL but if not, if could mean either calibrating the filter or removing it each time to meter through it ... mind you, you'd probably need to take it off to compose anyway ... unless you're using a TLR or RF.

Cool, will definitely try this!

beats spending close to €100 for the original "fader" types.

thanks for posting

The only problem "should" come with autofocus which is supposed to rely on polarization... But this has yet to be seen and there's no reason for it not to work with manual focus cameras.
