I've been having great fun shooting the pinholaroid and the 100 type back on the 'blad. This is going to be the start of an expensive and dangerous new obsession and it's all the fault of this website. I hope you're all happy.

Anyway- yesterday I found myself taking photos at a street party with both hands full of prints and negs and no way to drink my beer. A sorry state of affairs indeed. How do you keep the prints and negs safe when you're out and about?

I'd like to keep the negs to reclaim them later but they seem to be nasty sticky things that need to dry for ages (at least in northern climes) before they can be put away- is there some trick to this? Some magic box that keeps them safe and stops them sticking to each other? Or is the solution not to peel 'em (but that's no fun)?

LOL... Welcome to the world of an Indian deity with 8 arms...

The best scenario is a vehicle which enables you to have a mini-lab on the back seat.

Otherwise I always carry a couple of empty peel apart boxes and some tissues to wipe away the chemicals, especially if you want to keep the paper border.

Placing them back to back in the boxes is another idea.

Just the other day I was cleaning stuff up on the counter of GAP with the security guard giving me attitude.

The days of the ole SX-70 manipulation were even crazier on the road, take the shot and there and then find somewhere to start moving the inks. Did it on someone's warm bonnet once when it was Winter.... Perfect.

depends on what kind of film you are using. 669 and id-uv can be stored and peeled a couple hours later. i use a bento box to keep them from drying out faster. you can peel them when you get back to the car or home. most can be peeled later with little effect. some, like 667, tend to dry out faster and are harder to peel. some films keep developing, like 689, so you want to peel them in a timely manner.

A longer answer will follow, but the truth is that these days I hardly ever peel any of them until I'm at a safe location. Once I've checked one to make sure the exposure is close enough, I just snap away and put the un-peeled prints in my trouser pockets...you've gotta wear trews with side pockets for this to work properly, otherwise it gets messy.
 :o

FP film is self-terminating so you can't over process it. Polaroid isn't supposed to be self-terminating, but with the expired 125i that I use I've left it up to an hour with no ill effects.

One plastic bag, for the ?remainings?,

One medium box for the positives.

One big box for the ?negatives? to be recovered, but that doesn?t work in my case, they stick to each other... so the car soluction is best one. Difficult to bring the car with inside building though...  ::)

Thanks all!
Sadly I am car-less but i do have a bike. Maybe I should invest in some bulldog clips and clip them to the basket on the bike.

It's good to know that the fuji films are self-limiting- I can just slip them into the inside pocket of my jacket and peel them later- but sometimes I can't wait because I get over-excited and just have to look. Fore these I was thinking maybe a cigarette case or somesuch with a clip on each side

I know this isn't exactly peel apart but it works wonders for my 600 and instax shots

Quality! I can make one of these from the old film packs. Maybe I'll glue 2 or 3 packs together so I can have a wet>dry progression.

:) -but the difficulty is keeping your head level and not looking down and covering all the cameras in beer. The pinhole would probably survive but the Hasselblad might be quite unhappy...

Thank you! It's always good to see people who like to tinker putting info out there to inspire further tinkering.
(Sitting here staring at a broken Isolette, an m42 28mm lens and a pile of motors and bearings in my scap box trying to work out if I can build a Larscan. Any ideas on how I can get a disk exactly 56mm without access to a lathe?)

At the risk of outing myself as an idiot, something I am used to, I had no idea that some instant film was self-terminating :o I feel stoopid and yet pleasantly surprised! LOve the thought of snapping away and revealing the truth later.

...hey, Phil, I'd check this with someone who actually knows what they're talking about before you get all excited. I'm just repeating what I've been told. It's something I want to believe and it seems to work, but I've never checked an actual spec sheet or anything. God forbid  :P ;)

Outdoors in really cold weather I don't bother peeling Polaroids apart either. I've left expired Polaroids sitting under one of the kids' buggies for half a day in the winter.

Ed, I'm willing to give it a go - if it worked for you then I'm happy to waste a few sheets!

Sod the expense!

If it's a soft enough material, you could cut a blank using a hole saw and the mount it on a drill press and shave the excess off using sand paper while it's spinning... Or at least that's what I would try to do... Or just get an old 56mm filter and use it as a mold (maybe filling both sides with some epoxy?)...

I have no idea but these are at least a start.........

This is getting way O.T but hey-ho. It needs to be very round and centred fairly exactly. The drill press could work- but I only occasionally have access to one. I guess I could make the disc out of aluminium, plywood, MDF, plastic or whatever else comes to hand when I get some workshop time. I keep taking apart  broken old scanners, photocopiers, printers, VCRs etc  in the course of my dumpster diving to try and find a wheel of the right diameter but so far to no avail. These cameras could be awesome though- I really want to build one...

How do you keep the prints and negs safe when you're out and about?
Print are easy, they just get dropped in an empty box into the cargo pants pockets, shuffled occasionally to ensure they do not stick. Goop negs are harder, with a variety of drying methods used as mentioned above. I've been known to use an old paperback book with some success.

Real negs of course, I use a bento like Sean, filled with mugi-cha which keeps them wet for hours until I can clear and dry at home... Good luck! Skj.
