I still teach film photography and darkroom methods, and I have found it necessary in the past few years to warn my students not to open paper in the classroom, that it is only to be used in darkroom conditions. Again, they are so accustomed to opening a box of digital paper and slapping it into the printer that there is no thought given to opening silver gelatin paper in similar fashion. I cover this step the very first day of class, before they even have a chance to purchase any! So far, no paper wrecked. But colleagues have told me of students who opened their paper box in their kitchen at home so they could count the sheets; they wanted to make sure they were getting their full measure! At $80 a box, a very expensive lesson to learn!
